Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.
Warner Bros. Picture Group President Toby Emmerich is reportedly weighing the idea of shifting the DC Films structure altogether, integrating DC’s film operations into the studio’s main movie arm instead of keeping them in a separate building. This is how the superhero properties are developed and overseen at Fox and Sony, whereas Marvel Studios has its own independent office despite reporting to Disney.
And that has worked so well for Sony and Fox?? JFC, DC needs more autonomy and less interference from useless executives, not less. There should be a DC Studios in the same way Marvel Studios is its own thing at Disney.

According to Chris McKay, there's supposed to be a status update on Nightwing in February (when responding to a question on Twitter about casting).

I’ll be the lone nut ... sad to see Cyborg on the drop list. He was the only interesting character in Justice League.

I never believed for one second when the slate was first announced that Cyborg would ever come out. They were announcing movies just to announce movies, there was no plan.

But you bring up a good point. I think the executive structure is better at Disney with Kevin Feige at Marvel, Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm and John Lasseter at Animation basically running their divisions independently so they can focus on their own universe and protecting it from any stupid knee jerk reactions from executives who don't know anything about film making or what's good for the development of their universe.

Like I said, if they let Geoff Johns run it and give him the authority to plan and execute, he can make the DCCU work. He's a comic book guy, he knows how to plan out the arc. But if Emmerich or Tsujihara has final say, then their properties are a lost cause and the top will always chase and react to the box office. If they already let Berlanti do this with the DCTV Universe, I don't see why it can't work with the DCCU.

B.T.: Do you see yourself coming back for another 'Batman' or at this moment are you looking at different projects?
B.A: For me, it's interesting, and I always evaluate this stuff on the merit of the material. I want to direct a "Batman" movie, and I never got a script that I was happy with, so they are starting over and writing another script. And right now, I think a lot of different possibilities I think for the way the DC Universe could go, and I will just follow my interests in pursing that. And I know that I love working with this group of people, and it was a real joy for me to make this movie.

Interesting...
What if WB lets Affleck direct his own Batman movie AND lets Reeves do his?

I really think that’s the kind of shit they need to not do. They need to just make up their damn minds about what they’re doing and go with it instead of dicking around like: maybe we’ll do this or maybe we’ll do that. You don’t need multiple movies coexisting of the same character.
Either continue the DCEU or admit failure and salvage what works and move on.

This is Affleck once again waffling. IMO, we'll see him once more in Flashpoint and then he's done.

Ben. Shit, or get off the pot. If you're being hurt by harsh DC criticisms and think your career will be we damaged by DC films leave already. You got money in the bank and let's be honest...you will still make "not so great" films even after leaving DC. Either way...make up your mind dude. This back and forth shit is for chicks...

I actually think delivering a good Batman movie isn't difficult compared to some other superheroes. You can fit Batman into the Hollywood formula easier than some other stories. But Affleck is getting older each day and Warner would love a trilogy with the same actor, not a one-off movie.

Not to mention there are a shit-ton of good Batman comics they can draw stories from. Batman probably has more movie-ready stories in the comics than all other superheroes combined.

The problem as it currently stands is that it still seems like they don’t know what they want to do. Are we still trying to make the DCEU work, are we resetting a la Flashpoint, are disconnected solo films the aim going forward. All these questions seem unanswered and up in the air.

WB is in a tricky situation because I think most movie fans would be sick of seeing new origins for a whole roster of reboots. Hollywood has to abandon origin movies as the superhero wave becomes more mature in its success cycle.

They're not rebooting. Batman will be recast and they'll be focusing on solo movies with little (if any) tentacles to an overall arc.

It doesn't seem that tricky, we've already seen characters with de-emphasized origin movies. And they just have to follow the blueprint that Marvel did recently with Spider-man if they do a reboot.

Warner Bros. Taps Walter Hamada to Oversee DC Films Production (EXCLUSIVE)
By Brent Lang @BrentALang
As part of a shakeup of its DC film operations, Warner Bros. is promoting Walter Hamada to oversee its comic book movies, Variety has learned. He will serve as president of DC-based film production. In December, the studio decided to replace Jon Berg and Geoff Johns as the heads of the DC movies. Berg became a production partner with Roy Lee, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” who has a deal on the lot. Johns remains at DC as its president and chief creative officer, but is taking on more of an advisory role on the movies. In an official announcement of Hamada’s hire, Warner Bros. said Johns will “work closely” with the new production president.
The move comes as DC is looking for more quality control of its big-screen efforts — the studio captured acclaim and box office bonanza with last summer’s “Wonder Woman,” but was savaged by critics for “Suicide Squad” and “Justice League.” There is widespread frustration over DC’s failure to match the popularity of Marvel movies.
Hamada previously served for a decade as a production executive at New Line, a division of Warner Bros. There, he helped shepherd such horror hits as “It,” “The Gallows,” and “The Conjuring” to cinemas. The executive enjoys a close relationship with director James Wan, who is directing “Aquaman” for DC, and is credited with helping expand “The Conjuring” universe by making a well-received sequel to the movie, as well as spinoffs with the “Annabelle” series. He will be leaving New Line to work for Warners, and will also oversee any other types of comic book movies that the studio produces outside of the DC canon.
Toby Emmerich, who was promoted in 2016 to president and chief content officer at Warner Bros., worked with Hamada at New Line, which he ran before moving over to the main studio.
“Walter is creative, resourceful, and committed to excellence, and will bring those qualities to his oversight of our superhero films,” said Emmerich in a statement.
Emmerich went on to add, “I’m confident Walter and Geoff, working with our filmmaking partners, will deliver films that will resonate with both broad global audiences as well as DC fanboys and fangirls.”
Last summer, Warner Bros. named Courtenay Valenti, best known for her work on the Harry Potter films, as president of production at Warner Bros. She will continue in that role, as will DC Entertainment chief Diane Nelson.
Before coming to New Line in 2007, Hamada spent four years as a partner in the management and production firm H2F Entertainment. He began his career as an assistant at TriStar and eventually became VP of production for Columbia Pictures. He also ran development for MBST Entertainment.
A spokesperson for Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So... does he know anything about DC comics? His background seems to be a bunch of horror movies, so I hope he's also familiar with the DC source material.

Another article says he's overseeing Shazam!... so not sure how that is going because he's also got close ties to Emmerich.

I guess whatever. To me that resume doesn’t exactly read as he’ll be great for DC films. Just a guy who’s had some successes overseeing some of the recent trendy horror films. I do like the films he’s worked with mostly but it just sounds like WB is trying to throw whoever into the role.

I think he’s another executive who will say yes to anything WB execs will want. Kind of made me chuckle he’s being credited for helping expand The Conjiring universe. Because we want a universe of that.
