IDK, seems like other than some guidelines in establishing certain storylines, someone like David Ayer hasn't had any issues with DC/Warner and AFIK is the only credited writer. Of course it could be because there's not as much pressure for something like Suicide Squad to succeed compared to Wonder Woman which has a greater impact on the DCMU.

It didn't bite them in the ass. Nolan made the film's he wanted to make and clearly Warner was fine with it at the time and they made money plus resurrected the screen presence of their most popular character. It's not Nolan's fault that they didn't have the foresight to think ahead about doing a larger DC Film Universe.

A-listers are given a much longer leash.

It's kind of a Warners corporate thing where they don't really know what to do with their DC properties, and you end up with shit like Catwoman and Green Lantern, or they hand them over to big shots like Nolan and give them free reign. Which can sometimes work... they can strike gold with Dark Knight but it also means an a-lister they won't say NO to can clusterfuck any cinematic universe they're trying to build.

It kind of makes you wonder though, why did Warner give Snyder such a big role in crafting their DC Film Universe? I wouldn't exactly call him an a-list director. The only real reason seemingly is because Nolan collaborated on Man of Steel and Warner hoped he'd be their guy, but when he said no they went with Snyder maybe thinking fans would like that choice due to him having worked with Nolan.

Snyder definitely has something on someone at Warner.

Financially speaking he's done well w/ them.... except for Sucker Punch. He does a lot of flash unlike anyone else. I can see how an exec would want that. Plus... it's not like he's artistic director. He's simple but with purdy visual.

It isn't even that I dislike Snyder in all honesty, but he's not the kind of guy I would give the keys to something huge like this to. I don't know if Warner has exactly done that but they seemingly have placed a lot of faith in their DC Film Universe with him. I think its sort of a sketchy decision personally.

Who is leading all this? Is it just a committee of execs who hand out properties to be worked on by some people, those people do a script, and then those execs get a director that they like?

Marvel has Feige. We know that. But WB has what though? Snyder can't be leading it all cuz it sure doesn't sound like it. And same goes for Goyer. WB is just literally making sequels here essentially to the DC brand?

There was a good show on YouTube discussing the differences between Marvel and DC (on the business side of things), I'll see if I can find it.

A bunch of meddlesome WB executives. The WB model works well when the right director is chosen. Snyder may or may not be that guy. He nailed Watchmen and probably had his hands tied on a lot of decisions regarding Man of Steel.

re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

I think Alan Horn was the WB exec that famously commented that all superhero movies going forward post TDK would be similarly dark and gritty.

There was an article somewhere a couple years back on how in the world Synder could have secured the MOS gig after Sucker Punch looked so indulgent and so inept (from a story/dramatic POV). The gist was that the execs at Warner by that point knew Synder. They had prior experience with him and understood his language and vice versa. That was more important in a corporate setting than strictly the bottom line. This is why, despite the long absence of any kind of studio system, you still see the same players working with the same studios (or producers) over and over. I'm sure if you peruse a stack of the leaked Sony e-mails, you'll see that kind of familiarity = access taken for granted.

Well since he's now banned, I'll wager that he will not be active on any forum here.

Sucker Punch is easily one of the worst modern movies I've seen.

It's like it had some potential, but everything about - from the script to the art design to the direction - just screamed either "overlong self-indulgent music video" or "watching someone play a boring video game."

re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

Yeah in all honesty of his films I would say that Watchmen is probably the one I enjoy most from Snyder. It has some good visuals and as pretty much a straight adaptation of the graphic novel its pretty good. I wouldn't say its perfect but I enjoy it. I would say aside from that his other films vary in quality quite a bit. I don't hate Sucker Punch truth be told but it definitely isn't a good film. Its just throwaway material that's completely forgettable and the best parts about it are the good looking ladies. Man of Steel I liked a lot more the first time I saw it but it kind of gets worse with each viewing.

I'm not even sure why I own Sucker Punch. I blind bought it for some reason... while on the tech level for the BD it's top notch.. the film is so without a soul to it. Hearing Snyder talk about girl power and such is fucking embarrassing.

You bought it for the same reason I did, to see Emily Browning wearing skimpy outfits. That's the only reason why the movie was made. That's Snyder's interpretation of girl power.

I passed that stage after I turned 19 or so. I can now make decisions with my head instead of my hormones. Mostly.

That's the only reason why the movie was made.
What's scary is that Snyder probably thinks that it's his movie with artistic pretentious. Which in a way, is kind of even sadder.

That's Snyder's interpretation of girl power.
Well, at least he thinks the movie has a theme.

By he still shoots 35mm, so I'm willing to give him a lot of leeway .
