I didn't realize this opened this upcoming weekend. I've been really looking forward to it.

Kind of wondering why they bumped it from late August/early September to now. I guess they have some form of confidence in it.

The Matrix and a touch of Limitless with a female lead.

How many "emotionless" ScarJo movies does this make now, taking into account Underneath the Skin, IM2, Avengers, Lucy, and whateever else?

Wasn't there a movie with the same plot only with a male a few years back?

Limitless is very similar.

I'd rather look at Scarlett Johansson than Bradley Cooper, but obviously I'm biased .

Limitless isn't an action movie.

Some friends already saw it and have mixed feelings about it. I'm sure they'll whip up the reviews in the next day or two.

Re: Lucy (Besson, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Reviews starting to trickle in, 4 out of 5 positive so far. The positive reviews seem to be faint praise though. For example:

"Is it possible for a movie to be brainy and stupid at the same time? Luc Besson's "Lucy" makes a pretty compelling case."

This is one point that had me worried from the trailer, and it appears to be true. "the character's so powerful that she's never really in danger, which prevents the movie from generating any real sense of suspense."

According to most reviews it's silly but fun. Sounds like Besson to me.

Re: Lucy (Besson, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Variety gives it a generally favorable review, which I much enjoyed reading and certainly makes me want to see the film:

http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews...cy-1201267405/

Here are the first two paragraphs:

After her mesmerizingly out-there performances as an artificially intelligent being in “Her” and a come-hither extraterrestrial in “Under the Skin,” Scarlett Johansson takes a logical next step into the title role of “Lucy,” an agreeably goofy, high-concept speculative thriller about the first human being to successfully harness 100% of her brainpower. In no other sense, however, does the word “logical” apply to writer-director Luc Besson’s return to blockbuster form — which is to say, his latest aggressively stylish, self-consciously feminist, gratuitously globe-trotting pulp-trash extravaganza. Giddily recycling everything from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “The Matrix” to yakuza actioners and National Geographic documentaries, it’s a garish, trippy, wildly uneven and finally quite disarming piece of work, graced by a moment-to-moment unpredictability that will pique audience curiosity but may put off those who prefer their summer movies on the more conventional side.

Although it represents a significant roll of the dice as the most expensive project ever undertaken by the filmmaker’s EuropaCorp shingle, “Lucy” should capitalize on its strong international elements and Johansson’s bankability to become Besson’s biggest worldwide hit as a director since “The Fifth Element,” no small feat for an f/x-heavy original property in this over-franchised day and age. And unlike that bloated 1997 dystopian juggernaut, the film manages to clock in at a surprisingly sleek and multiplex-friendly 88 minutes, and its abrupt but elegant conclusion has the curious benefit of making this extravagantly silly entertainment seem somehow smarter and more enigmatic in retrospect than it does while it’s unfolding.
And here's the reviewer's deft response to the serious flaw in the film's premise, which was addressed on this board in another thread:

(The well-documented fact that humans actually do use most of their brains manages to debunk the movie’s premise without in any way detracting from its loopy pleasures.)

neat. If it can rock an 88 runtime that's very interesting. Also it's rated R. EuroCorp CEO said this was thier biggest budgeted film. Can't find what that is though.

I thought it wasn't coming out until the end of August, but I have seen the trailer for it quite often lately.

Re: Lucy (Besson, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

AVClub gave this a B+, headlining it as "Luc Besson’s Lucy is pure lunacy"

http://www.avclub.com/review/luc-bes...-lunacy-207246

The first half of Lucy contains the most energetic and purely entertaining filmmaking Besson has produced since The Fifth Element, packed with pulpy action, pseudoscience, title cards, sped-up montages, and teasing associative cuts.

Considering their association with The Onion, I've always been surprised at how thorough and tough AVClub is on movies

Or she's so powerful yet doesn't use the powers when it's most obvious.

Re: Lucy (Besson, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

The reviews for this one truly are all over the place.

Instead, this is closer to an art house film than a mainstream offering and the hue and cry from those expecting the summer's next big blockbuster will be loud indeed. Sure, there's plenty of action in Lucy but it's not of the rah-rah sort. This is a more contemplative sort of motion picture. The climax in particular, although as visually impressive as it is bizarre (Tree of Life, anyone?), is more likely to frustrate than satisfy.
