Edge of Tomorrow - Live, Die, Repeat (Liman, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

re: Edge of Tomorrow - Live, Die, Repeat (Liman, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
Just got back from it. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the action was well done but what really set it apart was the humor in it. Seeing Tom Cruise die repeatedly and some of the funny ways he was dieing were great. I've never seen Emily Blunt in anything before. While I don't think she completely pulled her role off she did have a presence about her. But I think she did a better job than say Milla Jovovich would have done as the stereotypical tough chick.
The only two knocks I really have against this movie are: The Alien's basically all looking like Megatron. I really think Hollywood blew it's entire load in designing the Xenomorph in Alien. And the ending was kind of confusing. In fact I would have rated this a 5 but the ending just didn't do it for me. Overall a 4.5/5 and a great movie that really should be doing better.

Well that's your problem. Hollywood didn't create the Xenomorph. H.R. Fucking Giger did the Xenomorph.
Sure Hollywood money was involved but... Giger.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the movie up until the ending. That didn't work for me at all when they
The movie was good, but the ending sucked balls and goes against the rules the film establishes for itself.
am I the only one around here that cares about the rules?!

That's all well and good but I still didn't like the ending.
Other than that, great movie. Worked in some good comedy with the action. Enjoyable all around. Tom Cruise killed it as usual.

Yeah, what he said!
Either way, it was a very tacked on Hollywood ending and no sir, I did not like it.

Loved it. Cruise is one of 4(?) bankable stars in Hollywood and Blunt was delightful. Fantastic popcorn flick.

I just got back from seeing it. Had a blast. Loved that it was essentially a mix of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers. I liked that it didn't take itself too seriously and the humor worked really well. Really good special effects and Cruise was great and had solid chemistry with Emily Blunt.
She certainly knows how to make push ups sexy. She just had a baby recently. I wonder if she was pregnant when filming this movie. I mean that was alot of physical work for a pregnant woman (if she was pregnant)
I didn't mind the ending as some here have criticized. It ended things on a very optimistic tone.

She got pregnant towards the end of the shoot I think.

You guys are crazy.
Cruise is more dependable to "carry" a movie more than any other actor.

You cant name the top 5 bankable actors and leave Tom's name off it.... Try it and see.
People might hate him but his movies make money.

Will this do well on home video? Most people seem to like it, but it's just not a very big hit at the box office.
The studio originally planned to release this in April. I wonder if it would've done better without all the summer competition...

Did BB MI4 BD have an inferior encode? First I've heard of it.
How well does Cruise do in Home Video sales?

I saw this yesterday and had a lot of fun with it. What I don't get is how people seemed to shit all over Oblivion but they're giving this a pass. I enjoyed both films, but I give the edge to Oblivion. How can that be labeled derivative and this isn't? All sci-fi is to one degree or another.
The editing here was great; sold the resetting perfectly by repeating key lines while also leaving out key scenes that are either shown later or only spoken of (like when they're in the farm house).
I didn't dig the whole "enemy has a hive mind, here's a big brain, yes, I'm the one loony scientist no one believes" stuff. THAT is about as rote as it gets.
Blunt was great, really held her own quite well. Cruise is the consummate movie star and the guy is always fantastic in my book.
I agree the ending was weak, but I knew there was simply no way Cruise would die. Hell, even when he does die (Oblivion) he doesn't die. But whatever, I had a lot of fun watching it and therefore, I will not complain.

Jumper was such a misfire. I'm glad to see this one turn out really well.
It's a really fun premise to see him "perfect" the day.
Blunt was very memorable. Totally dreamy in her role. I don't recall the last time I was the attracted to an actress is an action film.

Paula Patton and/or Lea Seydoux in MI4?
Hammer Girl in The Raid 2?
Granted... The Full Metal Bitch was awesome.
They kept talking about her actions in that one region that just cuz I loved her I wished we could see it. Just that scene. We didn't need to but she was rocking it in that suit.
