Re: Godzilla 2 (2018, Edwards) S: Mothra, Rodah, Ghidorah
Warner Bros. and Legendary have scheduled the next installment in their “Godzilla” franchise for a June 8, 2018 release.
Gareth Edwards, who is also developing one of the “Star Wars” stand-alone pics, returns as director of the monster movie sequel. At Comic-Con in July, Legendary revealed that Godzilla will be joined by a number of other iconic beasts from the long-running franchise — Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah — in the next movie.
The last film grossed nearly $500 million dollars, making a follow-up something of an inevitability. Legendary financed 75% of “Godzilla’s” $160 million budget, with Warner providing the rest and the companies splitting marketing costs.
Legendary recently announced a “King Kong” prequel, “Skull Island,” which will bow November 2016.

June 8, 2018?! Won't King Ghidorah have destroyed all our major cities by then?

I think they mean that those other Toho monsters will be joining him throughout the series. Having all three show up in the sequel would create an Amazing Spider-Man 2 type scenario.

I bet they'll get the 3rd out two yrs later, so an average of 3yrs...not bad. It is commendable they're waiting for the director...but they have the HP spinoffs and DC movies lined up, so they aren't hurting in the meantime.

I'd rather get part 2 in 2016 with someone else behind the camera. Edwards cut away too quickly from some of the good monster parts. Especially when we first see Godzilla up close.

I was very happy with Edwards direction, he made Godzilla good for the first time since 1954. I'm fine with waiting until he's available.

I think Borenstein has potential as a writer, but he had a tough time on the first film. A lot of the writing needed to be tightened up. And the Awakening graphic novel he was solely responsible for sucked.
But I hope he has a sense of the general consensus re: the first film and applies that knowledge toward making the sequel better. Plus, with Edwards tied up for the next two years on SW he's got lots of time to make it right.

The dialogue in the first movie was pretty rough in more than a few places, some script doctoring wouldn't go amiss this time out.
I was thinking about getting that graphic novel, is it a waste of money?

I'd say any comics that lead up to a film sucks, or it seems like they all do.
I've never been fond of them.

The story is weak, the timeline is jacked up, and the other monster Godzilla fights looks like an amorphous blob of goo.

re: Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019) S: Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah
Warner Bros. just did a big shakeup of its schedule that might be a bit of a bummer for all you Godzilla fans out there. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla 2 - which will allegedly include monsters like Mothra and Rodan - has been moved back from June 8, 2018 to March 22, 2019. That’s nine months, the amount of time it takes to create a human life. Reading between the lines, it seem making the film will take one more human sacrifice than early estimates claimed.
On the other hand, we finally have a release date for Godzilla vs. King Kong, which will come out May 29, 2020 - assuming the number of human sacrifices required has been accurately sussed out.
So when it comes to Warner’s Kaijuniverse, we have Kong: Skull Island coming March 10, 2017, Godzilla 2 two years later, and Godzilla vs. King Kong a little over a year after that.

Goddamnit.
Oh well, makes sense given what it was opening against. Hopefully this gives Edwards plenty of time to make the film amazing.
It also seems like they want this one to segue right into GvKK, so the delay should help as far as that goes.

Toho also has their own Godzilla flick coming out soon, so we won't be totally without the Big G.

Director Gareth Edwards Exits ‘Godzilla 2’
http://deadline.com/2016/05/godzilla...ry-1201755484/
EXCLUSIVE: Gareth Edwards has exited Godzilla 2. I’m told the exit was an amicable one for Legendary, Warner Bros and Edwards, who helmed the first film and promptly signed on to direct Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which looks from the trailer like it will be a strong next step for that franchise. Edwards has his own gestating projects he wanted to pursue, and they are smaller in scale than the back to back tent pole size pictures he is directing with the Godzilla launch and then the Star Wars spinoff. Max Borenstein wrote the current version of Godzilla 2, which was dated this week for release March 22, 2019. Edwards and Legendary had agreed to him stepping out before the picture’s date was set. Legendary and Warner Bros are looking for a director to replace him as they also work on Godzilla Vs Kong, which has also been set for May 20, 2020 release. Latter film was made possible when Kong: Skull Island was brought back from Universal to Warner Bros, where Legendary made Godzilla. Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. All this paves the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.

I think Edwards has a fantastic eye for composition and framing, and he knows how to use digital FX, but I wouldn't mind seeing someone a little less reserved about glorifying "monster porn" get in on the G action.
No suggestions at the moment, but I hope they find a solid replacement.
