I liked the movie but would have definitely cut 20 or more minutes from it.
Dump the main guy, his wife and his son completely from the film. Let Cranston's wife and kid die in the opening accident. Cut to Cranston doing all the stuff that the guy playing his son did. His son really did nothing spectacular that most any normal guy could have done (meaning his role wasn't really "action hero" oriented).
And there. More Cranston and you cut out at least 20 or more unnecessary minutes.

Yep, more than a few critics have noted this. In a movie that has so many good actors in it, they pick the least-talented one to have the most screen time - didn't make much sense, but then again, Edwards (from his limited resume) doesn't seem like much of an actor's director.

I hate that society needs the hero to have a Female for his motivation to do his thing. Read...Superman and Lois. ugh!
Also, Cranston is cool but people are so in love with him it's getting boring. Fact is...He could've have been dropped too. Ken Watanabe could have...SHOULD HAVE... done both Cranston's and Kick Ass' roles and it would have been a nice homage to the Japanese. But no...as always...they HAVE to put a WHITE MALE in the role or else American/European viewers will have issues.

I know everyone is using Cranston and Olson as examples of the underused actors in this film but if you ask me Ken Watanabe is the most underused of the bunch. A great actor who virtually did nothing but walk around with a surprised/shocked look on his face the entire movie.

Agreed. Watanabe is a wonderful actor, and though having a Japanese actor was a very smart idea (and naming him "Ishiro Serizawa" was a nice touch for fans), he was woefully underutilized and got almost nothing to do besides deliver pseudo-ominous dialogue and exposition and stand around looking confused. I'd much rather have him as the lead, to be honest.

Seriously, give it a rest already. According to you a man of color has never been given the lead in a big movie......ever.

They could have had Watanabe play a NHK reporter stationed in San Francisco who was covering the monsters for the press back home.

(Coincidentally, an ad for a box set of Raymond Burr's Perry Mason shows appeared at the top of this page when I typed this.)

Amen brotha!
You have plenty of time to petition WB to cast Michael B. Jordan in the sequel.
I'm sure everyone who bought tickets to this movie mainly did so because of white actors, and not that gigantic creature that has been featured in all the trailers and tv spots.

I think it would have been smart to use Watanabe as the lead. That way everybody would watch it twice to understand what he's saying, like in Inception.
