It's at 12 and 2 (negative), 86% with a 7.7 average.

The metacritic score is 59, but then I've never been a big fan of their rating scheme.

I'll be back in a bit with a long review (saw it yesterday), but in reading most of the reviews available so far, the primary criticism I see is the focus on the human element of the story, which is what I thought helped keep the story a bit more grounded. I thought it made Godzilla a better movie. Same with the slow reveal of the Big G. Recalls the slow reveal in Gojira.

"Human element of the story..." and "slow reveal of the Big G." This bodes well in my book. Thanks.

I'm actually going to see it again Thursday is a theater with better sound and picture. I am hoping it holds up on second viewing, and I am looking forward to picking out details I may have missed the first time around.

Interesting how movies can get a high rating with Rottentomatoes but still have mediocre ones with Metacritic. I only want this movie to get good reviews because I think that's the only way casual movie goers will give it a chance and not dismiss it as another cheesefest like what we got 1998.

I don't think reviews help much in that. Marketing probably has a much higher impact than reviews ever will. Look at stuff like TF or other summer type films.

This has a brand name so there's that. Also looks pretty good and epic enough for the regular person.

I think this movie's been tracking for about a $60 million weekend. Considering this is a reboot and that the last Godzilla movie (at least the last American one) was such a disappointment, I think that would be a great opening. This is the kind of release that could stick around most of the summer.

Later on in the issue, director Gareth Edwards mentions that Toho got to see the entire film and they apparently loved it:

"They saw it yesterday and I got an e-mail saying they thought it was fantastic!" he said. "So that was a relief."

Hahahaha.

Question: how come Toho is a bitch about letting us remaster the G films on BD? CC got it done but everything else hitting BD hasn't been hot. Kurosawa's stuff is handled better by them than G.

hanshotfirst1138 05-12-14 06:24 PM

Apparently, for whatever reason, Toho's masters for the G films aren't very well-kept.

Very fun movie. As has been noted, don't expect wall-to-wall monster fights. There are some scenes where the fighting is in the background. That was kinda odd. The human story was fine if a little cliche'd.

The effects are top notch, of course. Awesome sound design. There were several moments where the big guy got a round of applause. The movie got a nice ovation as the credits rolled.

One amusing moment came when the IMAX logo appeared during the little countdown. Instead of the little notes that play, they were replaced with a Godzilla roar.

Metacritic is actually more accurate. A film may get a lot of fresh reviews but it doesn't tell you how enthusiastic they are. I guess with the reviews so far, they like Godzilla but are not raving about it.

Either way, it is my most anticipated movie of the summer.

Yeah, that's what the score on RT is for. I just don't like the critics Metacritic picks to be part of their list.

Godzilla (Rotten Tomatoes) 89% (31 positive, 4 negative), average score: 7.2 out of 10
Godzilla (Metacritic) 6 out of 10 (15 reviews)

Do you have any complaints about G's screen time? Or did Edwards do it just right?

I can totally understand if someone is disappointed in his screen time. But when he's there, he's doing this thing. Maybe I would've liked to have seen a smidgen more of him. It's a very minor thing to me. It was a very quick 2 hours and I never looked at my watch once :)

Now, while there were shots of him making his way across the ocean, I would've liked to have seen
Spoiler:
an underwater shot of him swimming.

Sooooo i'm guessing he does his radioactive breath in this? Was it blue? Also.... How awesome was it? The marketing have done very well holding this off.

Spoiler:
Blue, and it got the biggest cheers and applause of the whole movie, especially the second time he used it.

I think it was calculated to get everyone ready for more mayhem in the next movie, which I think will happen.

Such a great blockbuster. Really, it is. Edwards gets just about everything right. The fight scenes are less destruction porn, and more of a homage to the old films. Alexander Desplat's score is one of the best of the year right below the score from UNDER THE SKIN. Yeah. It's a great movie. Must be seen in IMAX if at all possible.

Can a child under 10 see this without any major longterm counseling?

Interesting question. There isn't any gory violence. Though there are some pretty terrifying scenes. I wouldn't take a kid under 10 to it, but I don't think I'd discourage people to not take their kids. Judgement call. Depends on the kid I suppose.
