re: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair (D: Joe Johnston)
Not really, the Narnia movies haven't been particularly good and both the books and movies are pretty heavy handed. The first was passable but dull, the second and third were snooze enducing.
The Potter movies were at least really well made and had interesting aspects to them.
this thread needs more late 90s mediocre Australian rock in it.

In a better world this series would have been more popular than the Harry Potter franchise.

Apparently Northern Lights/The Golden Compass did pretty well in Europe where the books are more well known, but New Line sold the rights to the overseas distribution to another company for some weird-ass reason, and since it bombed in the US, they didn't make much off of it.

Since I like some things you dislike, I kind of think that might be kind of unfair to everyone else .

First 3 Potter films bored me to tears. Gave up on the series. Never got past the first book either.
I'm always down for Narnia though.

Yeah, but New Line fucked it all up. We talked about it in another thread were due to the failure of the film in the U.S. New Line ended up merging with WB amongst other things. It was a fiasco.

we're (I'm) digressing, but the finger is directly pointed at New Line for taking the film and doing it's own editing of 'The Golden Compass' from the director and editor - it was their fault all on their own.

The only Potter film I genuinely loved was the third one and that happens to be the most hated by fans of the books. You didn't miss much as none were ever as good as the third and the last two were downright awful.

Then in the best of all possible worlds, you would be a huge fan of Justin Timberlake and The Hunger Games, and you wouldn't like the weird obscure stuff. Conservation of energy, you know.

Oh wait, neither Timberlake nor The Hunger Games are actually bad. One Direction and Twilight though...

I've seen things way worse than The Hinger Games. It might not be a masterpiece for the ages or anything, but as far as big pop culture phenomenons go, I think it's pretty good, IMO.

I do like The Hunger Games...books. The first movie wasn't bad, it just felt generic. I haven't seen the second yet.

Eh, they're better than the Narnia movies so far, even if they are just toned down Battle Royale with an emphasis on pop culture and commercialism instead of political and socialistic criticism. They may not be great movies, but they're certainly better than most movies that target the same audience.

The Hunger Games movies are reasonably fun and well-designed, as far as movies based on teen pop culture phenomenons go, they at least have some intelligence behind them. I quite enjoyed the first Narnia movie. It was basically LOTR light, but I thought it did what it did well and was a lot of fun and a good adaptation of a much beloved book. There's an obvious strain of social commentary in The Hunger Games, evidently enough to get some commentators unnecessarily riled up. My dad leans way to the right, and I remember him saying some radio host was blasting Elysium as "socialist propaganda" or something, I think THG has gotten some similar buzz. Never seen any of the Twilight stuff. My younger brother was actually going with friends to see Quantum of Solace, and a buddy of his decided to buy tickets to the first Twilight solely to be an asshole. My brother was forced to sit through it, and he wouldn't let them leave until all of the credits had rolled. He said that afterwards, there was guy sitting in the front row by himself crying. My brother said he had no idea why, but it made him feel a lot better about his own life .

Some more in the link above.
Last we heard about The Chronicles of Narnia was in June of last year when Life of Pi and Finding Neverland scribe David Magee sent out a tweet to his private Twitter account saying that he completed a first draft of The Silver Chair after spending more than a year working on the project. It was an unofficial update, but a welcome one for fans of a franchise that seemingly expired quietly without a trace. Today, I’m happy to bring an official update on the progress of the film via producer Mark Gordon, who says Narnia is not only very much still alive, it’s experiencing a bit of a rebirth.
Gordon was on hand at the TCA winter press tour in anticipation his new CBS series Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, and I took the opportunity to inquire about the status of the next Narnia sequel. Gordon confirmed that they’re in active development, and hoping to move into production in the near future.
However, it seems that the next film won’t be a sequel at all, but the start of a new franchise entirely. Given the plot of The Silver Chair, the fourth book in the series, which takes places decades in future from where we last saw our heroes in 2010’s Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I also asked if we would see any of the original cast reprising their roles in the new film. The answer is a hard no.
"No, it’s all going to be a brand new franchise. All original. All original characters, different directors, and an entire new team that this is coming from."

The Narnia books, despite some heavy handed allegory, are a lot of fun and hold lots of charm, which never really made it on to the big screen. The Silver Chair is probably my favorite book in the series, which is a minority viewpoint. But Puddleglum was a great character and Tom Baker was fantastic in the role on the old BBC version. I enjoyed the Eustace and Jill characters over the other kids as well. They were less goody-goody.
All that said, I don't see how this reboot can work. I get that the other kids are too old now, but still, this is not a good starting place.

I hated the cast from the previous films, so this is great news. Love the books but didn't like any of the films.

Thought for sure this series was dead. I enjoy them quite a bit. Bummer about the cast. Since this one takes place in the future they could have used the same actors.

^ It takes place in the future of Narnia, so Caspian is now an old man -- but Eustace Scrubb is still a schoolboy since time moves slower on Earth.
Will Poulter looks younger than his age and could still reprise Eustace if they wanted to keep things consistent. The producers just want a fresh start for some reason.
