Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
Seems it only has an SD source for DF. I'm confused though. So...is it an all digital SD source type of thing or what? I've never seen it and know very little about it aside from what it is. Technically it COULD have an HD source...right? Don't most, if not all, cartoons have a source like that?

Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
Finally saw this, and ended up disappointed. And honestly, I came away more disappointed that the return of Riddick was pretty insignificant to the character's story as far as the Necromonger stuff from the last movie, or him and Furya. Seemed like just a filler movie. I know they had a low budget and were looking to get Riddick back to his roots, but they I wish they gave him something more interesting to do. My views line up close to Donnacha's from earlier in the thread.
Maybe 45 minutes of Riddick killing animals and raising a dog before the bounty hunters show up, and when they do it's pretty generic macho standoff before they start getting picked off. I agree with the complaint about Sackhoff's character, who starts off as tough butch lesbo and then all of a sudden turns flirty with Riddick. I too wish they explored the Johns connection a little more, although I did like Batista in the movie. He makes a great thug. Also didn't care for the ending, where Riddick has to get bailed out and saved. I liked the brief glimpses of bad assness from the Riddick character, there just wasn't enough. Overall, Pitch Black did a better job showing off Riddick and developing the other characters, Chronicles was a mess but at least it was ambitious and did something interesting with the character, but Riddick just tried to bring back the "old" Riddick and didn't quite get there and ended up like a generic Aliens sequel. |

Yeah this was a total rehash of Pitch Black. And VD is diving deeper into cartoon character territory with his slow deep boring Riddick voice.
How the fuck does a Furian have a slight NY accent? Sackoff was a waste. Any generic tough looking woman could have had her role. |

Riddick was lazy film making in my opinion. Just a rehash of the first movie with a bigger budget and nicer effects. It did nothing to progress the character at all and by the end of the movie i no longer felt an interest in seeing where the character could go. I sincerely doubt we shall see another Riddick movie any time soon...if ever. Twohy screwed the pooch on this and should have taken more of a chance in producing original content instead of going back to the well. |
Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
^ not even close.
They do have two more Riddick films that they hope to work on after this one. |
Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
Well whilst Riddick made twice its budget worldwide, i doubt it will be anytime soon my friend. It took a LOT of work for them to get Riddick made and only after budget cuts. After Riddick failed to set the box office on fire i think it will be a long wait until we see the next installment. I read the reports that they had two more films planned, but they had more planned after Chronicles and look how long and hard they had to fight to get another made. Almost 10 years between movies, and Chronicles did the same as Riddick (double production costs at worldwide box office). All i will say is don't hold your breath...

Riddick cost 38 million and made 42 million domestically and 56 million in foreign sales. This doesn't include what it will make on the home video market. 98 million and change is not bad for an indy film like this. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=riddick.htm |
Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
You seem to forget the budget does not include marketing...it wasn't a huge profit margin if it made one at all. Additionally the studio only gets back about half of the domestic take and half to a third of foreign for a movie like this. The video market will be where it earns what it earns. That won't be enough to make another.
We will never see another Riddick. I don't care what they have planned. IF Kojak becomes a huge for Universal he could possibly use it as leverage to make another. After this last one barely cleared expenses we have seen the last of that character in movies released to theaters that is... |

Here's how we get another Riddick:
Vin Diesel: You want me to sign up for another four Fast & Furious films? You have to release two Riddick films as well. Universal: Yeah, sure, what the fuck ever. |

You think they spent that much on marketing an INDEPENDENTLY financed flick from an already pre-existing franchise? I've got a bridge I want to sell you.

Yes they did. I don't see how you can't understand this. Ok I get it you love the character; but you ain't gettin' another one. Simple math.
However that is not what happened here though...nor will it he is already locked for the FF movies. That is why Kojak has to be the one. Do you even like Riddick, bro? |

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Vin Diesel's latest action picture "Riddick" is the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray in the United States, Rentrak reported Monday. |
Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
This was indeed an odd concoction of a film.. but I enjoyed it for the most part. By no means is it great, it's very hit and miss at times - but it's pretty fun all the way through. I'd be down for another.

Thank you. That's a few more million added to the total. Yeah, I can see them making another one. Fuck yeah.
I do agree that the only way more of these movies will get made is if Vin Diesel uses leverage he has with any other successful franchise to get them made. Outside the F&F movies his history has been checkered at best. Maybe another movie will get made, but i get the feeling that it will not be an easy fight and will not be as imminent as you are hoping for it to be. So don't hold your breath... |

Did you see the other DVD/Blu releases for January 14th? In the two weeks since then there has still been nothing really huge to take big sales in this field. And i was originally going to add a comment about marketing of the movie, but after seeing your responses its clear that you are never going to listen to reason and simply love the franchise.
