Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw this just now. Here's the thing. I didn't like Pitch Black. As far as Aliens knock offs go it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't anything amazing either. Chronicles was just a huge overblown ego movie. But I really like the Riddick character. I really enjoyed the video games and Diesel owns the role and the character is definitely neat. So I saw this mainly cause I like the character and was bored.

Overall I liked it and would say it was easily my favorite of the three movies by far. They did some pretty impressive things with the small budget but there were times that the movie looked really cheap as well. I also thought that it was a bit long. We could have cut a lot of the man vs wild stuff to tighten the movie up. Plus it also felt like three separate movies. Movie one is surviving alone on a planet. Movie two is a slasher movie when the bounty hunters arrive. Then movie three is an Aliens clone.

Diesel owns this role and he makes the movie pretty much by himself. The rest of the cast don't really have anything to do at all which is fine because this is Diesel's show. Really liked the side boob shot of Katie Sachoff too. Nice to see nudity returning to R-rated movies.

Like I said I enjoyed it overall but I think that they could have cut some stuff to make it an even tighter movie. Two hours is bloated but there's a good hour and forty five minute movie.
3/5

Awesome to see that they're thinking of adding that bit to the film. I'd love to see 2 more films. Can't wait for the BD.

Saw it. Overall, I liked it. However, I am a casual fan of these movies at best. I have seen the previous two but only once, and thought the first was good and the second lacked. I thought this one was on the level of the first. Only real gripe is that it seemed a bit bloated at parts and wanted more of Ms. Sachoff's gorgeous boobies. I will also say that given the right vehicle, she could be a major female action star. If they do another one, I hope it's more like this, I hate the whole Necromonger storyline.

Yeah I enjoyed this one... Good fun for a Saturday matinee. Between Riddick and Toretto, Diesel brings the entertainment for me.

Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Solid Snake was pretty accurate with his review, so I will try not to rehash his comments.

Riddick, much like its predecessors, essentially stands on its own. Yes, there are plotlines that carry through [spolier](i.e., Johns, Necromongers)[/spoiler] but not to the point that you MUST see the previous two installments. This is both good and bad -- it makes the film accessible, but it also misses a number of opportunities. While this plays closer to Pitch Black than Chronicles of Riddick, it manages to hold a third distinct personality. As several have said here ... the character of Riddick is stronger than the overall story arc of the films.

I would have liked to have seen
Spoiler:
the "father searching for the truth" angle of the Johns' storyline played up more.
The actor certainly had the chops for it, yet the story did not get enough meat to make it fully work. Can somebody answer this: Was the "kid" bounty hunter supposed to be another Johns (brother/son)? The movie never explains how he fits in (he doesn't) with the group; plus, the last shot sure made it seem that way.

Katie Sackhoff ... excellent performance from her, as always. However
Spoiler:
something odd happened with her in the last bits of the film. Mysteriously she switches from being a militant hard-ass to all of the sudden ooh-ing and coo-ing for Riddick. WTF? Then she is conspicuously absent from the end of the movie. "Tell Dahl I said 'keep it warm.'" Where the hell is she to tell her?!

Bautista ... damn fine job. Once again though,
Spoiler:
we magically warp him out of character for his climactic scene. Through the whole movie he was clever, sly, and entertaining. Then ... boom! He devolves into a brute for no presented reason (yes, the thinly obvious story-line reason is there ... but the character and the audience deserved better). Too bad. He would have made a good partner for Riddick when he goes up against the Necromongers again.

In short, definitely worth seeing. But has any other trilogy ever felt this disjointed and still worked?

Haven't seen this yet, but the trailer makes it seem like a remake of Pitch Black.

I enjoyed it. It felt like "How Riddick Got His Mojo Back". I hope they do at least one more to tie up the Necromonger/Furya angle.

While off topic, I was hoping Bautista would play Rhino in the Spider-Man sequel.

This film confused me in its structure, but the dialogue was half-way entertaining, even if only for some Santana scenery chewing at time, and some scenes of cheesy explosive tension. I liked the environmental backdrop, even with the crazy depth of focus being forever in a lot of the shots. Kudos on the Sackhoff wash-up scene. Riddick had some nutty ways to dispatch folks.

Would have liked it better if it wasn't so bloated in some early spots, and then the rest of the film just didn't have a good plotline to sustain my interest as I would have liked.

I give it 2.75 stars , or a grade of B-.

Diesel's had two hits this year in the franchises that made him a star. Reminds me of how Stallone only had hits when he kept to the Rocky and Rambo franchises. If the audience likes you only in certain roles, it wouldn't hurt to stick to them. A lesson to be learned there.

Was Rocky 5 a hit?

Re: Riddick (Twohy, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Expendables was a bigger hit than either Rocky Balboa or the last Rambo for Stallone, although obviously he couldn't have made it without the two prior sucesses paving the way.

As someone who, without irony, loves both the directors cut of "Chronicles of Riddick" and "Pitch Black," the movie was a huge letdown. A great opening and build-up to a very anti-climatic ending. Not awful, not great, just incredibly mediocre.

I thought that the movie was slow to get going, but once it did, I thought that it was a lot of fun. I enjoy the character of Riddick. I am glad this one was more in the vein of Pitch Black than Chronicles, although I like both of them. Vin Diesel was enjoyable in the role as expected. Katie Sachoff really did well too.

All in all, a good matinee.

Agreed. The beginning and middle were far better than the ending. I thought both PB and tCoR took a few chances with their endings. This seemed far more "hollywood" (which kinda goes against the grain of Riddick, IMHO).

Basically Pitch Black redux almost exactly, which is OK, since it's equally as good at what it does. Almost exactly the same basic ingredients-sexy heroine, high concept about an event that unleashes monsters, bunch of Aliens-style starships, David Eggby's nice cinematography, lots of violence and profanity, a religious character, and and an And Then There Were None-style slasher structure where characters are picked off. It works. Finally free the Star Wars-style space opera nonsense of The Chronicles of Riddick and its misguided attempts to make him the main character and start a franchise, it finally returns to its nuts-and-bolts John Carpenter-style B-movie roots, and is better off for it.

I liked this movie but not as much as the other movies. I didn't really understand the motivations for what people were during toward the end of the movie.

I really enjoyed the film. Missed it in theaters but caught the director's cut on BD. I like how they bookended the film with the Necromongers and Karl Urban basically
Spoiler:
turning into the Colm Feore character from "Chronicles" by "transcending." At least that's what I took from it. He took a dip in the aether and will probably return in the next installment.

Spoiler:
In other words, Karl Urban won't be in the next movie?

Spoiler:
He'll be there but will come back as a super powered being sort of like Colm Feore was in Chronicles, but even more powerful. He'll come back, because you still need to put a face to your main enemy and Vaako is pretty cool anyway.

They gots to.

hrmmmmm. I'll wait till it goes down a bit. 2 old BDs w/ the cartoon and the new film for 40? Bucks. Still too high for me. Hell...I got the Indy set for 35 bucks. That was worth it though I could have gotten it for less had I seen the deal it had at some point.

Yeah, 10 bucks a pop. I don't think they ever released dark fury on Blu by itself. That would be my only reason to get the set - for DF. I already have the trilogy minus DF.
