I realize the main selling point is Hanks, but the poster (the second of the two shown in an earlier post) seems incredibly lazy to me even by Today's standards.

Now 23% seems very low for a Tom Hanks-Ron Howard blockbuster thriller.

Seems like it's getting hammered by U.S. critics. I'm sure it's still going to make a shitload of money with WW box office included.

I'll probably try to see it next week since I was a fan of the 1st 2 movies even though they are somewhat convoluted end of the world mumbo jumbo. Hanks was solid in them as Langdon.

As RichC2 mentioned earlier, the previous two movies weren't rated that well either.

This only made $800k in Thursday previews, less than Jack Reacher 2 ($1.33M and a $22.9M OW). Probably looking at an OW of $20M or less (if it has the same multiplier as Reacher 2, that equals an $18M OW). Edit: And I just remembered, the World Series could hurt it.

The reviews are somewhat disappointing but I enjoyed the first two well enough that I'll see this regardless.

Maybe not in the theater but definitely a rental or blind buy.

Won't go see it in the theaters....but I'll definitely blind buy it on VUDU when it comes to streaming in 3-4 months.

Enjoyed the first two myself.

I saw it today. All I can say is if you liked the first two films, enjoyed the novel, or both, you'll like the movie. It's fairly loyal to the source material, the same as the first two films were. The only thing really different about it is the fact that this one's shot digitally (the first two were shot on film) and Howard goes for more of a "Jason Bourne" vibe this time around (even though Salvatore Totino is DP once again)...a little more shaky cam that I would have preferred.

I also saw a matinee. I'll make the same sentiment as Shannon. If you liked the 1st 2 movies, you'll probably like this one. I enjoyed it even though it's a pretty by the numbers doomsday thriller. They did add a Bourne Identity vibe to it with Langdon suffering a slight case of amnesia and having to recall missing events.

I've never read the Dan Brown books, so the big reveal midway through the movie that the villain was:

Spoiler:
Felicity Jones character Sienna came as a surprise. She spent the 1st half of the movie being Langdon's sidekick like his 2 previous female co-stars. Until her big turn because of the reveal that she was the girlfriend of the mad man in the opening sequence.

Hanks was solid once again as Langdon. He's getting up there in age, but I would be game for another Langdon movie if it's in the cards.

I'd give it 3 1/2 stars and a B. I'll probably see it again and add it to my collection. The thing I do like about the series is the international locations. It made the movie feel grander than just being a standard virus thriller.

I should have also pointed out the movie changes the book's ending...I'm assuming they did that for American audiences. Given the fact that it bombed here, Howard should have gone with the book's ending.

Here's the difference:

Spoiler:
In the movie, the virus is contained. In Brown's novel, the virus gets out...but it's not what they thought it was. Instead of killing one-third of the population, it makes one-third of the population infertile...giving the bad guy a little more ambiguity than he has in the movie version. I think it got changed because American audiences would throw a fit if they sat through a film about stopping a virus and it WASN'T stopped.

Rented it today.

Yuck.

Do yourself a favor and just read the book... it is soooooooo much better.

The movie version's ending had me groaning soooo bad. To add to Shannon Nutt's explanation:

Spoiler:
In the movie version they make Sienna out to be in cahoots with Zorbist and sets herself as the one to make sure the virus get's out... sacrificing herself in the end but to no avail.

In the book, she is a major help to the good guys and even though the virus was released well before the book started (we learn in the book that the bag the virus was in was water soluble and the "date of release" was actually the day that bag would be totally disolved.

Anyways... like I said, just read the books.

This just showed up on Tubi to stream for free so we watched it last night. Had no idea what it was about since I hadn't read the books, but it's a bit timely, considering

We enjoyed it for what it was. Seemed a little faster paced than the first 2. The only weird part was that the final battle was just
Spoiler:
a fight with some random henchman. Or was that guy in the movie earlier? I didn't really recognize him.

I love the books, but extremely dislike the movies.

I like the fast paced, but detailed, nature of the books. It doesn’t translate well to a movie format, in my opinion.

Re: Inferno (2016, D: Ron Howard) S: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones -- Dan Brown novel

I think they translate very well into movies. Adult detective style with Hanks running the show. It hits the adult demographics perfectly. I liked The DaVinci Code movie, but they did change up some stuff and it did feel a bit long in parts. Angels & Demons I thought was really well done, despite the lack of details from the book that was left out (like the beginning at CERN, the book had a lot of stuff to start off the story, but the movie took 5 minutes on it). I’ve been to Italy and Rome several times, so it’s just a nice movie to look at. A travelogue with a body count. My favorite book out of the series.

Then Inferno...unfortunately is weak in both story and movie. It’s the first book of Dan Brown that reads like a screenplay. The movie is pretty much what you get in the book. Shame, Florence is my favorite city in the world.

Origin, Brown’s latest Langdon book is better since he gets into a good amount of backstory like the first two. I just didn’t care for the overall story, it’s just more of the same. Seems like Brown has run its course for Langdon adventures.
