I don't think you know what condescending means if you think that comment was condescending. I'm surprised you didn't call me pretentious for using the word "tedious"

I'd say this is actually one of their best slates in years. Of course, having seen all the Best Pic winners and about 3/4 of the nominees since 1928, I personally don't think there was ever a time when the Academy was a really great indicator of quality.
That is all to say - they've awarded a lot of great films, but they've also awarded a lot of crap.

Actually, there have been shockers many time in the Foreign Language category. The reason is Rule 13, which strangely enough mandates that in order to vote for the Best Foreign Language film, the Acedemy member must have seen all the nominees in an Acedemy theater. That makes it a much smaller subset of voters than the whole Acedemy and can make for a different than expected outcome sometimes.

I haven't seen Flight but does Denzel actually act in it or does he play Denzel where he just screams his lines?

I haven't seen Amour, but of the ones I have Silver Linings Playbook is the only one who deserved so many nominations.
But this is no surprise. The academy has their collective heads up their collective asses.

I'm ineligible to judge whether The Pirates! Band of Misfits was a worthy selection because I fell asleep and didn't feel compelled to go back and finish it. And me a big Aardman fan.
