Re: Oscar Nominations 2013

Director is definitely the biggest surprise line-up, with no Affleck or Bigelow. I guess a Lincoln BP win is pretty much locked now.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2013

I am shocked at the Directing nominations. With Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow not nominated, that doesn't bode well at all for Argo or Zero Dark Thirty. It's extremely rare for a film not nominated for Directing to win BP. The last time that happened was Driving Miss Daisy (1989) and before that you have to go back to Grand Hotel (1932).

I have no idea what the favorite for BP is now. It looks like it's wide open.

Yea, when was the last time a Best Picture winner didn't even have the director nominated? Sounds like ZDT will not win BP.

I called Tommy Lee Jones's nomination back in October! But I also said Bradley Cooper had no chance at a nomination, so it evens out.

Boo! An overly long, boring, tedious film. Exactly the type of film the old ass Academy voters love.

This is probably the only year I can think of where I have no issues with any of the nominations. Good job, Academy.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2013

I haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty yet, but out of the nominees my winners would be:

Best Picture:
Loved Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, and Django Unchained. I'll give it to Argo (but it has no chance since Affleck wasn't nominated for Director)

Best Director:
-David O Russell

Best Actor:
I didn't enjoy Lincoln overall, but DDL was good. He's a lock to win

Best Actress:
-Jennifer Lawrence

Best Supporting Actress:
-only performances I saw were Sally Field and Jacki Weaver. I'll give it Weaver

Best Supporting Actor:
-DeNiro!

Re: Oscar Nominations 2013

For the comicbook geeks:
Dark Knight Rises - 0 nominations
The Avengers - 1 nomination which puts it on par with...
Mirror Mirror - 1 nomination ... which is fewer than
Snow White and the Huntsman - 2 nominations

The only nominees this year with a nomination in Picture, Screenplay and Editing are Life of Pi, Lincoln, and Silver Linings Playbook - I wouldn't be overly surprised to see Life of Pi or Silver Linings win overall but anticipate Lincoln winning.

I see Naomi Watts or Emmanuelle Riva winning Actress, unless Silver Linings pulls a sweep. They're all deserving, though Watts gets an edge for showing titty again, Riva for being 85.

Ugh. Me either. I don't get all the love for that film at all! It was o.k. at best (for me). But not good enough for me to finish.

If you didn't finish it, then how are your thoughts on whether the film is deserving valid without having formed a full opinion? Although having said that I also thought it was okay.

I loved Lincoln, it's still my favorite movie of the year (haven't seen ZDT yet). Just had to say that with all the Lincoln hate going on.

Are you saying my opinion would have changed if I had finished the entire film? That's a big stretch. I watched 30 min and was bored to tears. I highly doubt my opinion would have changed watching the rest of it. It wasn't a poorly made film, the acting was fine. I just found the story very uninteresting.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2013

I'm saying it's possible, but my thought is that to say it is undeserving without having finished the film is unfair to the film itself. Although in this case I do agree with your thoughts, so maybe you would have thought the same the whole way through.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button had 13 nominations and only won 3. Perhaps there's hope? (That's the year Slumdog Millionaire won 8 out of 10 noms)
