Re: Oscar Nominations 2013
I'm fine with the nominees overall. I've seen all of the Best Picture nominees except Zero Dark Thirty and Amour (they haven't opened in Utah yet), but I like all the ones I have seen to at least some extent.
I liked Beasts of the Southern Wild, though I would have much preferred to see the other indie darling - Moonrise Kingdom - get its slot.
It's always nice to see a foreign film get in for Best Picture.

About time. Nobody else I know has seen it, maybe this will get their asses in seats.
Put it this way, everyone in the movie does a great job. The four nominees, plus Chris Rock and Anupam Kher (dad from Bend it Like Beckham).

I think it's absurd that Affleck and Bigalow weren't nominated. Clearly those were two of the best directing jobs all year (probably the two best). That said, I don't get the Lincoln hate going on here. I thought it was a fine, if old fashioned and slightly stodgy film that was pretty engrossing with a performance by DDL that was one for the ages and will be looked upon as timeless and iconic, not unlike Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird. The Academy has honored far worse (King's Speech, Driving Miss Daisy, Slumdog, The Artist).

My only horse in this race is DJANGO UNCHAINED, but with no Tarantino/director nomination, I don't think it has much of a chance at anything. I would have preferred Waltz in the Best Actor category, since he and Foxx are clearly co-leads in the film. Granted, he'll have a better chance in Supporting, although I have no idea who's going to win that one. I wonder if the film has a chance in the Original Screenplay category, given that the probable Best Picture winner, LINCOLN, will take the Adapted Screenplay award.
I'm glad THE MASTER did not get nominated outside of the acting categories. While I will grant that all three performances were quite good, I don't wish to see them win. I don't think a conceptually bad film should get rewarded for the few things it does well. Which brings up an interesting question: was there ever a performance that won an Oscar for a really bad film? Yes! Elizabeth Taylor in BUTTERFIELD 8. And it wasn't even a good performance--although it IS memorable. Everyone felt sorry for her because of tragedies and illnesses in her life at the time. Shirley MacLaine, who was up for THE APARTMENT (Best Picture winner/great performance) wisecracked afterwards, "I lost out to a tracheotomy."

Re: Oscar Nominations 2013
Over the past several years The Academy Awards have taken a real slide. Anymore it's more about names and what's perceived to be 'hot' at the time.
This one proves that.
'Lincoln' was a mediocre film. It had good moments and good acting but ultimately was like a plane failing to take off. Sure it had wings, and a engine but just couldn't break away from the gravity holding it down. 'Lincoln' had me interested. I went to see it and felt like it never went anywhere at all. Terrible direction in my opinion.
I, at one time, valued the AA. I enjoyed seeing them. Now, I find them to be, for the most part, an absolute waste of time.

As I posted in the Lincoln reviews thread, I like history and think Abraham Lincoln is a fascinating person....but making a movie based solely on the politics of passing the 13th Amendment does not make for an entertaining movie. I think it would have been better had they covered Lincoln's entire life rather than just the end. IMO

BTW : A big for not nominating Looper in the Original Screenplay category. It was one of the freshest and coolest screenplays I've seen in a while.

That is all to say - they've awarded a lot of great films, but they've also awarded a lot of crap.

I'd say this is actually one of their best slates in years. Of course, having seen all the Best Pic winners and about 3/4 of the nominees since 1928, I personally don't think there was ever a time when the Academy was a really great indicator of quality.

As several others have pointed out, it has always, always, always been this way, whether you perceived it at the time or not.

Superiority complex anyone?
"I'm better then everyone who didn't like Lincoln because I enjoyed watching sophisticated gentlemen eloquently and passionately discuss the nuances of passing the 13th Amendment for 3 hours"
I bet you watch CSPAN and MSNBC all the time to feel smarter then everyone else.
