Re: Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine
Thanks, I guess I should do some actual research before spouting my nonsense. I do only see Cate being praised in discussions about the movie, I'm glad the nominating boards feel the same way about Hawkins as I do. That's awesome.

Excellent movie, I expected a much more tragic ending though, Jasmine jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Sally Hawkins was amazing.

I think the bench was far more tragic than a jump would have been.

I think for some people that are as caught up in themselves as Jasmine, suicide is never even an option.

Just caught up with this on DVD. I liked it.
I was surprised to see that the DVD was 5.1
Is this the first time Woody has used a surround mix? If so, why now?
Also, while the Maddoff scheme was certainly inspiration for the story, and evidently it borrows a bit from Streetcar Named Desire, I couldn't help but read the film as a backhanded jab at Mia Farrow. All the references to adopted children. Alec Baldwin leaves her for the neighbor's babysitter. While he is portrayed as a cad and a crook, Jasmine is portrayed as someone even worse. She is his betrayer and she is depicted as being without the ability to cope with it all, someone who further self sabotages her life.

Saw this film again. Jesus. Jasmine is a character I just don't like seeing go through the shit she does. And she's a shit person too. Sooo.. it's like... constant shit vacuum. Jesus. Again.. fucking brutal emotions on Blanchett's part in making that character. Jesus.
