You are disgusting. I don't know what the deal is with all this hatred toward her. It's as if you guys just have blinders on, paying no attention to what is really going on. One of you needs to pull the reins and stop this. Then again, why am I wasting my time. As the expression goes. You can lead a SJP to water but you can't make it drink.

Depends. The big blocks or the small ones that can fit in your hand?

That's pretty much how it works in most things. If you're really not a fan of Swank then I don't see the big deal anyway. obviously, more people are a fan of Witherspoon.

In the race to the box office bombs I was sure she'd win by nose

To be fair, that's a shitty argument to make and one can easily note flaws.

For example, let's look at Nicolas Cage's filmography post-2010. Kick-Ass, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Season of the Witch, Drive Angry, Trespass, Seeking Justice, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengenace, Stolen, and The Croods.
  • 4 were theatrical bombs (The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Season of the Witch, Drive Angry, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengenace).
  • 3 went direct-to-DVD in North America (Trespass, Seeking Justice, and Stolen).
  • 1 was a sleeper hit thanks due to DVD/Blu-ray sales (Kick-Ass).
  • 1 was a hit because, you know, animated (The Croods).
With the exception of Kick-Ass and The Croods, those are seven major motion pictures that lost money. The lowest budget film on that list was Seeking Justice at $30 million. He should be closer to the top.

Sandra Bullock, I disagree with, The Blind Side was her biggest hit yet and other than a supporting role in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, hasn't done anything in a lead role since. You know, unlike the actors on this list that churn shit out every waking minute of their lives.

And tell me, math wizards of DVD Talk, how did Shrek Forever After lose money? It did over $750 million worldwide theatrically. In North America alone, it moved another $60 million plus via DVD/Blu-ray sales. Again, how did it lose money?

Re: Forbes : Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Stars

Agreed. Three films isn't much of a representation. Now Murphy has had a string of bombs, but take Heigl and Witherspoon, for every Legally Blond that hits a home run, there are 20 that are modest. In fact most of those rom-coms are modest earners at best. It keeps the potential pretty low

Ben Stiller and Denzel Washington have to be the best investments if I was a studio. They have way more hits than misses.

Here it is :

Adam Sandler Tops Forbes' 2013 List Of The Most Overpaid Actors

Adam Sandler
Returns $3.40 for every $1 paid.
Sandler tops our list this year because of two big flops, Jack & Jill and That's My Boy. His return should be better next year thanks to the success of Grown Ups 2.

Katherine Heigl
Returns $3.50 for every $1 paid.
A few years ago, Heigl was being touted as the next big romantic comedy star. Now she'll need to cut her payday demand if she wants to keep starring in films.

Reese Witherspoon
Returns $3.90 for every $1 paid.
Witherspoon is in the middle of a career reinvention. She's buying up great female-centric books for her production company and appearing in smaller films like this year's acclaimed Mud.

Nicolas Cage
Returns $6 for every $1 paid.
We don't count animated movies for this but it we did, Cage would have done a bit better. He voiced Grug in DreamWorks Animations The Croods which grossed $587 million at the global box office.

Kevin James
Returns $6.10 for every $1 paid.
James ranked on our Best Actors for the Buck last year but the recent film Here Comes The Boom knocked his return down to the overpaid category.

Denzel Washington
Returns $8.30 for every $1 paid.
As one of Hollywood's most reliable stars, Washington can demand a large upfront paycheck. Unfortunately, his films don't always do great at the box office.

Steve Carell
Returns $10 for every $1 paid.
Carell has been making some smart decisions lately taking roles in smaller films like Hope Springs. But he had a major misfire with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

Jennifer Aniston
Returns $10.60 for every $1 paid.
Aniston is having more luck with supporting than starring roles. Horrible Bosses earned $210 million at the global box office but Wanderlust, which she starred in, brought in only $22 million.

Matt Damon
Returns $10.60 for every $1 paid.
Damon had a string of hits with the Bourne movies but his latest films haven't been such sure things.

Ryan Reynolds
Returns $10.70 for every $1 paid.
Reynolds' returns haven't been great and they're only going to get worse. His summer 2013 movie R.I.P.D. was one of the biggest flops of the year but it hit theaters after our research deadline.

Adam Sandler Tops Forbes' 2013 List Of The Most Overpaid Actors

Adam Sandler is one of the few actors in Hollywood who can still demand a paycheck north of $15 million. That’s great for his bank account but not always so great for the studios that employ him. A string of recent misfires lands the funny man at the top of our most overpaid list.

The two biggest offenders on Sandler’s resume: Jack & Jill, in which he played both halves of a brother-sister twin set, and That’s My Boy, in which Sandler (47) played the father of Andy Samberg (35). Jack & Jill grossed $150 million but the film cost an estimated $80 million to make. Considering studios take home about half of box office receipts, that means only about $70 million flowed to Sony Sony, which also had to pay to advertise the stinker. That kind of return didn’t justify Sandler’s large upfront pay.

That’s My Boy did even worse. With an estimated budget of $70 million, the film brought in only $57 million at the box office worldwide. In other words, it was a major bomb. We estimate that for every dollar Sandler was paid on his last three movies, the films returned an average of $3.40.

Of course when a Sandler movie hits, his pay can be justified. The problem for Hollywood is that telling a hit from a miss before the movie is made is almost impossible. But with someone like Sandler, you have to pay up hoping that the movie will do big business at the box office. Sony won that bet with Grown Ups 2. That movie grossed $246 million on an estimated $80 million budget, making it one of Sandler’s best performing films. Our research for this list comes from our Celebrity 100 work though so we are only counting movie that came out before June. Grown Ups 2 hit theaters in July.

Still, one has to wonder if it’s worth continuing to pay Sandler’s huge upfront fees in the hopes that his next film will be a hit when it seems audiences might be getting tired of Sandler’s shtick. Don’t be surprised if studios start asking him to take less upfront in favor of a heftier chunk of the back end if the film is a hit, or if the actor starts trying to do more animated work. The cartoon Hotel Transylvania was the biggest hit of his career, grossing $358 million at the box office worldwide.

To compile our list we looked at the last three movies each actor starred in over the three years to June 1. Actors don’t make as many films as they used to so that first criteria eliminated a lot of folks right away. Drew Barrymore, who has appeared on our overpaid list in past years, was disqualified this year because she didn’t have enough films in our time frame.

Looking at pay, movie budgets and expenses, we calculated a return on investment number for each star and then averaged those numbers to get an overall return.

Close behind Sandler in second place is Katherine Heigl. For every dollar she was paid Heigl returned an average of $3.50. After films like 27 Dresses Heigl was heralded as the new queen of romantic comedies. She started demanding a big upfront fee and studios were willing to pay it … until flops like Killers and One for the Money.

Reese Witherspoon ranks third with an average $3.90 return for every $1 she gets paid. Witherspoon is currently reinventing her career. She’s been smartly buying up hot, female-centric books for her production company. We will see more of Witherspoon behind the scenes in the coming years although she’s starring in Wild, the best-selling book about Cheryl Strayed’s 1,000 mile solo hike. Expect Witherspoon to take a huge pay cut for her own movies.

Kevin James make our list for the first time in fifth place. The actor actually ranked on our Best Actors for the Buck list last year with an average return of $22.40 for every dollar he was paid. This year his return falls to $6.10 because of Here Comes the Boom. The film, about a teacher who tries to become a mixed martial arts fighter to raise money for his school, grossed only $73 million at the box office worldwide.

Another new comer to our list this year is Steve Carell. The comedian had a major misfire with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The film grossed just $22 million at the box office worldwide. We estimate that for for every dollar he was paid Carell returned an average $10, ranking him seventh on our list.
