"Based on author Yann Martel's best-selling novel, "The Life of Pi" is the story of a zookeeper's son who finds himself in the company of a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean."

Visually looks stunning on my laptop. I hope they have enough 2D showings so we can fully enjoy the picture quality.

Ugh. How did the man who gave us the gorgeous "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" go to making trite looking, tacky, poorly rendered CG spectacles?

I saw the clip for this before Prometheus. It looked awful. I kept waiting for it to be a commercial for something, then I kept waiting for it to end.

Re: Life of Pi (2012, Ang Lee)

Wow, I had no idea this was actually being made, let alone was ready to be released. I remember for a long time Night Shaymalan was supposed to be developing it. I was a big fan of the book, and wanted to see Werner Herzog take on the adaptation. I pictured him taking real animals out on the ocean.

It is difficult for me to judge the CGI on my computer screen, but usually trailers have to use earlier work, so the finished work is still being refined as the movie approached release.

Yeah the 3d clip before Prometheus was terrible.

I also saw the 3D clip before Prometheus. I thought it was some sort of weird demo short, I had no idea this was going to be a full feature. Ugh.

i've never read the book, I hear it's good. when I read the plot...i could only imagine this looking pretty damn good in a Cel shaded environment of sorts for this to "feel" real.

This is going to be the unexpected smash of the year. Just wait and see. Book's ending was incredible.

The ending will make people hate the movie more.

Never heard of the book or movie until this thread but after viewing the trailer, let me take a stab at it anyway.

Spoiler:
I'm going to guess
Spoiler:
that the tiger doesn't really exist, the tiger represents the kid.

As much as I really enjoyed the book, I disliked the ending, thought it weakened the story.

I can see why the ending was so important to the author though. I read (twice to give it a fair shake) Martel's follow up book, Beatrice & Virgil, and it is clear it is more important to him to deliver an academic message than to tell a good fucking story.

Boy, you nailed that one. Mainstream audiences will hate this kind of thing. Massive failure at the box office.

Although if critics rave and it's up for a bunch of awards, it might make some of its money back.

I read the book's plot synopsis on Wikipedia. Maybe I'm just a rube but it sounded at least somewhat interesting until the ending. The ending just turned it into something that was trying to be smart but ended up as crap.

What? That's insane. There is no way this story needs a three hour running time. That has got to be a mistake.

That's how long the shitty trailer felt before Prometheus.

Add me to the list of people who saw the teaser/trailer before Prometheus and came away from it feeling confused and completely disinterested.

Re: Life of Pi (2012, Ang Lee)

The book was pretty engaging but if I remember correctly the ending was not necessarily what was said, since
Spoiler:
didn't the kid actually believe all the events were occurring? Only the authorities thought it was fake?
