2024 Amazon Prime "A group of friends gets together for a cannabis-infused, technology free, dinner party only to learn a bomb is headed right for them." It had some laughs here and there though wished Anna Camp kept the blonde hair. Natasha Leggero stole the movie. |

2024 Amazon Prime "An intimate story about a recovering alcoholic named Ella (Anna Paquin). A series of tough breaks forces Ella to move back in with her father Alan (Ray Winstone), while her daughters are under the care of her ex-husband Joseph (Youssef Kerkour) and his new partner Bethan (Pippa Bennett-Warner)." Anna Paquin and Ray Winston shined in this and Luca Hogan who played the young kid he befriended her might be a star. His character liked Prince so that was cool with me. |

HIM Universal Studios Blu-Ray Marlon Wayans, Tim Heidecker. Directed by Justin Tipping. 2025 A promising young football player joins an isolated compound to train under a dynasty team's aging quarterback. "Him" is something of a Horror Fantasy about an aging Quarterback played by Marlon Wayans and an up-and-coming star played by Tim Heidecker. Wayans puts Heidecker through a (literally) Hellish private training regime that he promises will take the young man to the next level. It's an interesting idea and Wayans and Heidecker are both quite good. However, the film was pretty much undone for me by an overload of Style. Every single shot in the film is visually designed within an inch of its life. There are images from perfume ads, men and women dancing in stylized costumes, x-rays of skulls being crushed, and an eff-ton of over-the-top religious symbolism, all to an unrelenting score. I just found it suffocating and pretentious. Perhaps a simpler and more intimate approach would have worked for me. |

Last evening I watched Firefox 1982, produced, directed and starring Clint Eastwood. There may have been other people in the movie. :)
Plot: A retired air force pilot is sent into the Soviet Union on a mission to steal a prototype jet fighter that can be partially controlled by neuralink. This is a great movie for me, I love spy movies, Russian movies, hot jet aeroplane movies, and well, Clint Eastwood. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...7467504bc5.jpg First, the steamy Clint in the shower scene. :) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...e864f66753.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...06926444e2.jpg Diversion fire to steal the MiG 31 (motion blurr, fast scene to capture with a cell phone) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...c3c912fc3b.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...099bc06a30.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...fe18d1334e.jpg Take off of the (fictional) MiG 31 https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...532df0068a.jpg MiG 31 Dogfight Yeah, mostly just jet photos. There is a whole story before these. It is all good. |

6 Days (2017) - a thriller based on the real-life siege of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980 by Iranian Arab terrorists. The terrorists hold a couple of dozen people hostage and threaten to start killing them if their demands are not met. Mark Strong plays a police inspector who acts as negotiator. Jamie Bell plays part of a special forces team that is planning to raid the embassy to rescue the hostages. Abby Cornish plays a BBC reporter covering the story from the street outside. I thought this was pretty good. The tension mounts nicely as the terrorists become more desperate, while the SAS team is planning and practicing their assault. Strong grounds the film as someone who is trying to prevent any violence. The movie doesn't take a strong political stance, though it does allude to Margaret Thatcher and the British government's desire to look strong and not become a "soft target" for future terrorist attacks.

2016 Better known title is "Chuck" "He was the pride of Bayonne, N.J., a man who went 15 rounds in the ring with Muhammad Ali. But before all of that, Chuck Wepner was a liquor salesman and father with a modest prizefighting career whose life changed overnight when, in 1975, he was chosen to take on Ali in a highly publicized title match. It's the beginning of a wild ride through the exhilarating highs and humbling lows of sudden fame, but what happens when your 15 minutes in the spotlight are up?" Second time I saw this and Elisabeth Moss and Naomi Watts are in it too |

Amazon Prime 2022 "Fired from her seventh job in two years and estranged from her family, Audrey (Jenna Malone) is restless and dwells in a distinctly modern solitude, relying on YouTube for companionship. After falling down a video rabbit hole, she discovers the world of adult adoption and decides to try it herself in hopes of finding a sense of belonging." I wish Jena Malone got more big roles since she is a pretty good actress. |

The Roses Hulu Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman. Directed by Jay Roach. 2025 A tinderbox of competition and resentments underneath the façade of a picture-perfect couple is ignited when the husband's professional dreams come crashing down. "The Roses" is adapted from the same source novel as Danny DeVito's 1989 "War of the Roses" with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. "War" was a Black Comedy about feuding spouses whose divorce proceedings turn cutthroat, leading to a bleak, cynical ending. I remember discussing the film with a friend who had just gone through a divorce, and he was genuinely insulted that anybody considered the film a Comedy. Jay Roach's "The Roses" keeps the premise but delays the inevitable "War" until the final third. For the most part the film is two terrific actors, - Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, -trading witty banter and sly insults, and maybe because they are British it's all rather fun despite the venom. However, the rest of the cast, -playing their friends and co-workers, - are all out of a smartass Sitcom and their humor is pretty much flat-footed and crude. Of course, the film is set among The Wealthy (though I'm sure the filmmakers think it's only the Upper Middle Class), though it might as well be Mars compared to how I live. I wasn't really expecting the film to take the dark turn of DeVito's version, but it does (though in a much different way). The ending sort of sneaks up on you, and I was expecting one last after-the-credits scene to provide an "out", but it never came. |

Last night I watched Everybody's Fine. 2009 - Directed by Kirk Jones, Starring Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale.
Plot: A widower who realized his only connection to his family was through his wife sets off on an impromptu road trip to reunite with each of his grown children. I only watched it because of the lady on the train yelling Rocks. (Michele Morgan). It is kind of sad, touching, and thought provoking. Worth a watch. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...500fd818b.jpeg |

2025 Netflix "When a hard-working Alabama factory supervisor discovers that for 20 years she's been earning only half of what men with the same job are paid -- only because she is a woman -- she begins a long journey to fight for justice." A story and person worth knowing about but this was a corny movie and full of cliches and bad pop and country music playing during the scenes. I did not get why they had to mix in clips with RBG constantly throughout the film and this was a movie and not a documentary. If Patricia Clarkson was going to be the star you would think it would be a lot better. |

Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues Decal Releasing Blu-Ray Rob Reiner, Michael McKean. Directed by Rob Reiner. 2025 Spinal Tap, England’s loudest and most punctual band, reunite following a 15-year hiatus for one final concert. "This Is Spinal Tap" began its Home Video journey on a Criterion disc packed with extras; it recently returned to Criterion for an equally packed re-master that looks about as good as it can. "Spinal Tap 2" is 83 minutes, and the only extra is a trailer for "Fackham Hall", which has more laughs than the main feature. Don't get me wrong, "Tap 2" is amusing, but I smiled more than I laughed, though I did laugh out loud now and then. The dialogue is a mix of Improv banter and some pretty obvious punchlines (most of which "land"). The original had a low-rez look befitting a Documentary from The Eighties, but the sequel is shot on digital and looks terrific. The cast features returning leads Rob Reiner (who also directs), Michael McKean, Harry Schearer, and Christopher Guest and several of the surviving supporting players, including Fran Drescher. There are also cameos from several Music Legends including Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, Elton John, and Lars Ulrich. "Spinal Tap 2" works best as a Cautionary Tale about the ravages of Time. |

Nouvelle Vague. Breathless is one of my favorite movies. I watch it with subtitles off and always want to learn French after watching it but I never do. This is BS but Godard is about destruction so It fits. I enjoyed it. Off topic, I watched Goodbye to Language in a rundown theater in downtown LA, the only place that was showing it. It was the most interesting movie I've ever seen in 3D with a different image in each eye. |

Ms. 45 Arrow 4K Zoe Tamerlis. Directed by Abel Ferrara. 1981 After being attacked and raped twice in one day, a shy and mute seamstress takes to the streets of New York and randomly kills men with a .45 caliber gun. Nothing says "Exploitation Film" better than Abel Ferrara's "Ms. 45". While "Death Wish" holds a special place in my heart, it follows a fairly conventional "Vigilante Film" path. "Ms. 45", on the other hand, just goes off on its own crazy-pants direction fueled by the whims of the director and a sometimes amateurish, sometimes exotic performance from newcomer Zoe Tamerlis (sometimes billed as "Zoe Lund"). It's such a wonderfully grimy film set in a nasty, legendary section of New York but Arrow Video delivers wonderful picture quality that both captures and enhances the film's low budget aesthetic. The film has a soft consistent look, but it feels cinematic and intentional rather than low rez, and the HDR reveals an amazing color pallet I wasn't quite expecting. It's weirdly attractive. The "Limited Edition" comes in a nice slip case with a booklet and a poster. There are the usual interviews with the filmmakers as well as two short videos from Zoe Tamerlis's husband telling stories of her troubled life off-screen. Ferrara says Tamerlis came to him as something of an innocent and after the film became a heroin addict whose habit would lead to her death at an early age. Being a current year Arrow release the disc also includes a commentary and video essays that play like a Creative Arts dissertation with a side of Feminist Studies, and you can bet that the term "Patriarchy" comes up sooner than later. I find them more amusing than enlightening. |

I remember seeing this in the theater. I was disappointed with the film, but the 10-minute Horror Movie at the center of it is terrific. I wish they'd gone with that for the whole film, since that's obviously where their heart was. |

Americana. Lionsgate Blu-Ray Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser. Directed by Tony Tost. 2025 The lives of local outsiders and outcasts violently intertwine when a rare Lakota Ghost shirt falls onto the black market in a small South Dakota town. Writer/Director Tony Tost refers to "Americana." as "A Western Fairy Tale", but I was reminded of the Indie Crime Films of The Nineties. The story structure definitely echoes the work of Quentin Taratino and Robert Altman offering a cast of disparate characters in separate story arcs which intersect to tell a larger story, this time centering around a valuable artifact that various criminals, desperate characters, and Native American activists are willing to kill and die for. Sydney Sweeney is charming as a sweet stammering waitress with Nashville dreams, and Paul Walter Hauser is convincing as an awkward kind-hearted man looking for love. Eric Dane, Simon Rex, Halsey, and Zahn McClarnon are also in the cast. "Americana." came and went in the theaters for all of a week, and it was dismissed as another Sydney Sweeney film nobody bothered to show up for. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. |

Last night I watched Port of Shadows 1938 (France) directed by Marcel Carne, Starring Jean Rabin, Michel Simon and Michèle Morgan.
Plot: A military deserter finds love and trouble (and a small dog) in a foggy, French port city. This movie is an example of poetic realism. I enjoyed the movie a lot. Especially the dog. Sorry for the poor quality of photos. Foggy movie. :rimshot: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...5f16b107a3.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...f377a16785.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d2cc477d28.jpg Not only does this movie have a cute dog, it also has bumper cars.
