Rambo: First Blood Part II Lionsgate 4K
Sylvester Stallone. Directed by George P Cosmatos. 1985
Vietnam War veteran John Rambo is sent on assignment back to Southeast Asia to uncover missing POWs, and ends up with his hands full.

I love "First Blood". It was not only a tense Action Film, but it had fleshed-out characters and a story to tell. "Rambo II" is a bit more hyperbolic and less nuanced, and when I first saw it in the theater, I was mildly disappointed that it didn't live up to my expectations. Actually, I remember it as a film that was hated by critics, -as much for its supposed Politics as its filmmaking, -but was loved by audiences. There's even a 10-minute piece on the disc that more-or-less pisses on the film and uses it mostly to take swipes at Ronald Reagan.

Over time the film has grown on me. Sure, there are a lot of contrivances and Stallone suffers a little too beautifully, but it's a very satisfying film. It's full of quotable lines and iconic moments. Stallone wisely limits his dialogue and lets Richard Crenna and slimy Charles Napier do most of the talking. Hell, I'll even admit to enjoying Frank Stallone's end theme.

It is good but still think First Blood was the best Rambo movie of them all.

2014

Sony Movie Channel

"Two men prepare for a boxing match that will change their lives. One fights for redemption, and the other fights for change and hope."

It was ok but would have been better if somebody else played the lead.

RIP Louis Gossett Jr and James Caan.

2023

AMC +

"The Blackvale School for Girls, 1971. It's bad enough that students Samantha (Madison Baines) and Clara (Georgia Acken) can't go home for the holidays, but things take a deadly turn when a gang of cult killers arrives at their doorstep--just in time for Christmas."

it was entertaining in the beginning but then got lame quickly.

Mena Massoud from Aladdin hammed it up as the villain.

A documentary on Faye Dunaway and learned about stuff I did not know about her personally.

I saw Mommie Dearest a long time ago and did not know it was viewed as camp and thought it was a serious Oscar worthy movie back then.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was randomly showing at Regal yesterday. It was a forty minute drive, but I made the time because I've always wanted to see it in theaters. My local arthouse has shown Raiders and Last Crusade several times, but never the second movie. I assumed it was due to Disney limiting revival screenings because of the film's perceived cultural insensitivity. All I know is it's still one hell of a fun ride, only enhanced by watching it on the big screen.

The showing wasn't well advertised (I got tipped off by a YouTuber mentioning it) and only three other people bought tickets, but the image presentation was top notch. Surround sound was lacking and I wish it had been in a larger auditorium, but at least this theater still uses matte curtains to adjust the screen size to the correct aspect ratio. The other theaters in my area (Cinemark, Marcus) are lazy and did away with those years ago, resulting in frequent cropped images or needless dead space at the top and bottom of the screen. It was refreshing to see projection done right again.

Rambo III Lionsgate 4K
Sylvester Stallone. Directed by Peter MacDonald. 1988
Vietnam War veteran John Rambo goes to Afghanistan to rescue his former commanding officer.

This might be the first time I've seen "Rambo III" in its entirety. It's a disc I picked up years ago on the cheap. The film was a disappointment during its Theatrical run and I can see why. It was an expensive film, and it looks great, but it's all very rote and doesn't connect on an emotional level. Stallone again plays "Rambo" as a very stoic figure, hoping to convey his internal struggle all through his eyes. Instead, he just comes across as a chiseled Eighties action figure.

1972 - Yes it's silliness but it's rapid fire, well timed, screwball comedy, Keystone Cops silliness. With great performances. 1970s San Francisco was the perfect place to stage it, with references to at least a dozen classics.. I laugh out loud ever time I see it from the original theater, to revivals, to cable, to now on Criterion. Fortunately there was enough time between each viewing so the gags remained fresh

Xanadu Kino Lorber 4K
Olivia Newton-John. Directed by Robert Greenwald. 1980
A Greek muse visits Earth as a human and, with the help of a former big-band orchestra leader, inspires a young artist to open a glitzy disco roller rink.

I suppose it's time for a confession. I actually went to see "Xanadu" in the theater back when it opened in August 1980. I found the movie equal parts Campy and cringey, and Michael Beck (of "The Warriors") was all wrong for the Male Lead. Olivia Newton-John is genuinely charismatic, but as an actress, she's a lovely singer. "Xanadu" just seemed like a clumsy attempt by a filmmaker who had never seen a Musical, let alone directed one.

Forty years later, -during The Pandemic, - TCM ran "Xanadu" late one Saturday night and I had a good time with it. In such grim times it seemed refreshing. And I really appreciated the dance numbers a lot more than I did back in The Eighties. I watched the film with the subtitles on, which often corrected me on what I thought were the lyrics of the songs.

Kino's 4K looks good for the most part, while the blu-ray looks a little harsh. Kino has included four commentary tracks, which I'll eventually get around to.

Mind Prey (1999) — Hardly a great adaptation of the John Sandford novel (whom I'm a big fan of and have read numerous of the Prey series), and it absolutely looks terrible and quite cheap, but still not unwatchable and Titus Welliver was great as the villain. Eriq LaSalle was okay as Davenport and far, far better than Mark Harmon's portrayal in Certain Prey at least. I had seen this before, maybe even in 1998/99, and this was a tad better than I remembered. **½/***** (DVD)

Stolen Girl Vertical Blu-Ray
Kate Beckinsale, Scott Eastwood. Directed by James Kent. 2025
An American woman spends more than ten years tracking down her daughter who was abducted and taken to the Middle East by the child's father.

Kate Beckinsale has made a habit of playing bad-ass women who look good carrying a gun since "Underworld" re-ignited her career twenty years ago. Beckinsale is definitely the best thing about "Stolen Girl", contributing a strong presence and a smokey voice to an otherwise routine Thriller. The film is watchable enough, but other than the casting, it's on a par with most any Lifetime film.

Riddick Shout! Factory 4K
Vin Diesel. Directed by David Twohy. 2013
Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge.

I really enjoyed "Pitch Black" back in 2000, but I was left cold by its ambitious follow-up "The Chronicles of Riddick", -as was most of the paying audience, I suppose. "Riddick" was an obvious attempt to pare down the storyline to what made the original work. For the most part "Riddick" succeeds in its mission and provides a gritty R-Rated Thriller (though this disc also offers an Un-Rated cut). The first half of the film reminded me of the old Comics Magazine "Heavy Metal" as it follows Riddick and a jackal-like pet making their way across a hostile alien planet.

The second half features Riddick facing off against a team of bounty hunters who are chasing after him. The cast includes Dave Bautista, Katie Sackhoff, Jordi Molla and Bokeem Woodbine. It's good tense entertainment with plenty of loathsome CGI creatures. On the downside, the film keeps alive some of the characters and plotlines of "Chronicles" even though they distract from the story at hand. The disc features strong picture quality and more 'Bonus Features" than are advertised on the packaging. Unfortunately, the increased clarity of the image makes the plentiful green screen backgrounds all the more obvious.

Under Siege (1992) — Really solid action-thriller where it's a trip to see Steven Seagal actually giving a damn. The action scenes directed by Andrew Davis was great and the pacing on point. Tommy Lee Jones was pretty zany (kind of reminded me of his Two-Face, frankly) and of course Gary Busey was insane, albeit a more toned down version of his character from Lethal Weapon. Budget on this was only $30M (with inflation would be $70M today) which makes this even more impressive. ***¾/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Fair enough, but setting aside that Rambo never seems to run out of ammunition or rockets when he commandeers the helicopter he uses to destroy the POW camp, that action sequence is one of the all time greats in the history of cinema and I dare say has not been done better to this very day in many a post Rambo II action/war film.

Also, I watched The Tomorrow War for the first time on Peacock and really enjoyed it.

Maybe this is on the Criterion Channel too?

Peacock

"Shia LaBeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter's battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his dreams and his relationships on the ropes, he falls back in with a dangerous crowd and has to take the biggest swing of his life to reclaim his hope and his family."

I liked this.

Shia has his personal issues and demons but can still bring it as a actor and he convinced me as a British or Irish Bloke with his accent.
