Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Recently, I watched In the Electric Mist 2009, directed by Bertrand Tavernier, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Sarsgaard, Kelly MacDonald, Levon Helm and James Gammont.

Plot: A detective in post-Katrina New Orleans has a series of surreal encounters with a troop of ghostly Confederate soldiers while investigating serial killings of local prostitutes, a 1965 lynching, and corrupt local businessmen.
I just love this movie, and not even for the crime drama part, but because I like the character development done excellently by the superb cast. And because I love crime dramas that take place in Louisiana. Tommy Lee Jones is excellent as usual.

1978. Hadn't seen this in a very long time and was sucked right in. Fascinating 70s political thriller. Peck as the evil Dr. Josef Mengele and Olivier as his adversary, a Nazi hunter, are superb. Don't want to give to much away because the unfolding of the complex plot is half the fun. Fugitive Nazis hiding out in South America set in place a plot that involves the murder of 94 men throughout the world. All 65 years of age and civil servants. Why? Watch the movie.
Predating Jurassic Park by 15 years, audiences were less informed on the concept of cloning, that's the plus of watching it today. Audiences at the time did have the extra possibility of it actually happening because all these Nazi guys were still alive. There's speculation over Mengele having seen the movie.

The Home Lionsgate DVD
Pete Davidson. Directed by James DeMonaco. 2025
Max, a troubled man, starts working at a retirement home and realizes its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As he investigates the building and its forbidden fourth floor, he starts to uncover connections to his own past and upbringing as a foster child.

"The Home" is a modestly budgeted Horror Film set in a Retirement Home and I found it very thoroughly unpleasant to watch. Perhaps it's because I'm very old and the mundane horrors of a nursing home is too close for comfort. Pete Davidson gives it a sincere effort, but he just didn't work for me as a sympathetic lead. The film is filled with graphic images that are hard to watch (needles in the eye, teeth removed with pliers, John Glover full frontal); it's certainly effective on a "Gotcha!" level, but I was glad to be done with it.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage - the first Venom movie wasn't great, but I liked the character from the comics and it was cool to see him in his own movie. This movie was not very good. Carnage was sufficiently menacing but could have been portrayed in a more interesting way, and I thought Shriek was kind of wasted. Not sure if I want to bother with the third movie now.

Relay Decal Releasing Blu-Ray
Riz Ahmed, Lily James. Directed by David MacKenzie. 2025
Tom, a world class “fixer”, specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from potential client Sarah, needing Tom’s protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change.

"Relay" reminded me of the tense character-oriented Thrillers of The Late Seventies like "Day of the Condor". It's more about foot chases, tense exchanges and paranoid hand-offs than Action Set-pieces. The lovely Lily James is the whistle-blowing Target, Sam Worthington is The Heavy, and unlikely hero Riz Ahmed is their Go-Between; they're all great in this and it makes for a slick ride. "Relay" is fast-paced and very entertaining. Unfortunately, the disc is just the film and no bonus material. Since its Decal, I imagine it will turn up on Hulu.

The Running Man Paramount
Glen Powell. Directed by Edgar Wright. 2025
A man joins a game show in which contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are pursued by "hunters" hired to kill them.

I vaguely remember reading "The Running Man" decades ago, right after author Richard Bachman was revealed to be Stephen King. I recall it was a fairly grim book, and nothing like Paul Michael Glaser's 1987 movie, which was a big screen Comic Book (in the best possible way). That version of "The Running Man" was a simple "Ah-nold" vehicle full of terrible puns and violent deaths and it remains entertaining to this very day.

This new version of "The Running Man" is closer to the tone of the novel (as I remember it) and takes itself seriously except when it doesn't (see Michael Cera in a bit part). I'm a big fan of British Director Edgar Wright and based on his previous films I'm a little surprised he didn't take a more satiric and sharply edited approach to the project. It's a shame because Glen Powell is a charismatic lead as "Ben Richards".

The movie plods along for the most part and misses a lot of opportunities to distinguish itself. For example, Ben Richards is pursued by a team of hunters, but they're not given distinctive identities or killing methods as they were in the Schwarzenegger version, and that's just Action Movie 101 and in terms of the film's plot, it would be "Good Television". The lead hunter is masked for most of the film, and when we finally see his face, it's not a meaningful reveal (which, again, is Action Movie 101). Another mistake is keeping Richards' wife and child (his reason for doing the show) off-screen and disconnected from him for most of the film. The wrap-up of the movie is a bit muddled and non-committal and puts a button on the story without answering some basic questions.

"The Running Man" is not terrible or a train wreck and it's reasonably entertaining in its fashion. It's just not quite as much fun as I expected.

Caught Stealing Sony Pictures Blu-Ray
Austin Butler. Directed by Darren Aronofsky. 2025
Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.

Darren Aronofsky is a brainy director of grim, challenging films. He's responsible for the amazingly bleak "Requiem For A Dream" as well as several films where the lead essentially dies in the final frame. I was told going in that Aronofsky was going for something different this time, something a little fun. As I knew it was a Crime Film, I was expecting something in a Tarantino vein, with a certain amount of carnage, but delivered with a wink.

No. "Caught Stealing" is a dark, dark film. It is filled with scenes of physical torture, graphic beatings, gunshot executions, but thank heaven the cat is kicked off-screen. This is a tough film to watch and there were scenes that made me recoil. That being said, "Caught Stealing" is an excellent Crime Story set in New York in The Nineties. I really liked Austin Butler in this film. He's convincing and emotional throughout, and he just has a lot of charisma. There's a wide range of criminal characters all chasing after millions in stolen money, played by a great supporting cast including Zoe Kravitz, Griffin Dunne, Regina King, Vincent D'Onofrio, Liev Schreiber, and Matt Smith. The film has a good pace, and Aronofsky shoots it with a lot of style. It's certainly a good-looking film, well presented on disc. I enjoyed the film, but Aronofsky has an odd idea of "Fun".

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Last night I watched In the Hand of Dante 2025, directed by Julian Schnabel, Starring Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Martin Scorsese, Jason Momoa, and Al Pacino

Plot: A handwritten manuscript of Dante Alighieri's poem "The Divine Comedy" makes its way from a priest to a mob boss in New York City, where it is taken by Nick Tosches after he's asked to verify its authenticity.

In this movie, Dante as a character is more on the periphery, with the possession of a fabled handwritten Divine Comedy manuscript as the central theme. For me, the movie was a foggy hallucination, hard to follow, and tries too hard to be brutal from the opening scene. (i have to admit that I do not generally like mob movies). But the cinematography is stunning, and Oscar Isaac has his best acting hat on, but not sure what Schnabel was trying to accomplish. Whatever it was, it did not happen for me. Maybe I am dense. It jumps around in two time periods, Dante's time (14th Century) and the early 2000s. I really tried to keep an open mind, all the way up until Jason Momoa appeared with his Man-Bun, white suit and torture tools. I think I would have liked it better if Dante was actually strolling through Hell with Virgil looking for Beatrice. Al Pacino has one scene, excellent of course, but too little to save this movie. Martin Scorsese plays a mysterious holy wizard or something with a huge white beard, reminiscent of Gandalf, who spoke gibberish. Others who watch it might have a better take on it, but for me, I have no desire to watch it again.

Funny thing... Venom movies, I only like the parts where Venom is talking with Eddie. I think that interaction is gold. Same with DeadPool movies. I just watch for the comedy.

Sisu Lionsgate 4K
Jorma Tommila. Directed by Jalmari Helander. 2022
When an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness tries to take the loot into the city, Nazi soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him.

With "Sisu: The Road to Vengeance" coming out this week (with Stephen Lang as the Russian Main Villain), I thought I'd re-visit the original. The film still holds up. It's very much a War Comic in the best way (I could see Joe Kubert drawing this). Unlike most American Action films, "Sisu" is not overburdened with dialogue or the need to throw a quip in after every kill. It's a wonderfully outlandish film.

She Rides Shotgun Lionsgate DVD
Taron Egerton. Directed by Nick Rowland. 2025
A girl marked for death must fight and steal to stay alive, learning from the most frightening man she knows-her father.

"She Rides Shotgun" is another entertaining film that got lost in Lionsgate's junkyard of 2025 bombs. And it's too bad. "Shotgun" begins as a Southwestern Noir turned Criminal Road Trip Flick, the kind of film that Walter Hill would be very comfortable with. It's all very terse and grittily poetic with a little bit of heart generated by the Daddy-Daughter storyline that's never overplayed. About midway through there's an unexpected twist that throws the film into more predictable Action-Thriller territory with a Big Bad, car chases and Police shoot-outs.

I like Taron Egerton of "The Kingsman" and he's very convincing and heartfelt in the film. Ana Sophia Heger is very good as his ten-year-old daughter; she's one of those kid actors who comes across as genuine rather than Disney (if you know what I mean). The only disappointment is Rob Yang (he's "new" to me) as the caring cop on the case (see Harvey Keitel in "Thelma and Louise"). He's just too emotionally vanilla compared to the rest of the cast.

"She Rides Shotgun" (which is based on a book) is one of those films where I was really impressed with the first half and grew disappointed as it went in a more conventional direction. Even so, it's still very entertaining.

I liked it and Collin Farrell was outstanding and should get a Oscar for this and Tildo Swinton appeared in the movie too.

I hope it gets a 4k disc release and the cinematography was excellent.

Worth a watch and add it to your viewing que.

Together Decal Releasing Blu-Ray
Allison Brie, Dave Franco. Directed by Michael Shanks. 2025
A couple's move to the countryside triggers a supernatural incident that drastically alters their relationship, existence, and physical form.

"Together" is another fine entry in what has been a very good year for genre films. This is pure Body Horror, and it's as grotesque and as ludicrous as 2024's The Substance", fueled by CGI-enhanced images of flesh being distorted in horrific ways. Allison Brie and Dave Franco, - married in real life, -portray a couple who have reached that phase where they have to decide if staying together is worth the misery of being together. I hate to say that their situation is uncomfortably easy to identify with. Now a supernatural force seems to be drawing them together like magnets, and every touch literally fuses their flesh together, and it's increasingly difficult for them to pull apart.

The premise requires a certain amount of commitment from the viewer as some of the images of Brie and Franco tumbling around like puppets on a string can be a bit laughable. But Director Michael Shanks (not the actor from TV's "Stargate") is always able to ground those scenes with something not for the squeamish. And, yes, there is a sex scene that packs an uncomfortable twist. "Together" remined me a bit of "Weapons" where the build-up is so creepy that the resolution is almost a letdown. Almost.
