HDNET Movies

This was torture and felt like a annoying reality show where everybody talks into the camera.

Looking at Teri Polo and her fine ass back in 2014 was the only good thing and maybe the late Dennis Farina had some moments to chuckle at.

Plex and maybe 20 minutes of ad interruptions.

It is on Tubi too but not in HD and I won't settle for watching a 2014 movie in SD.

Directed by Lulu Wang and starring Jack Houston and Brit Marling

I liked it and it is set in Berlin which I think is a fascinating underrated city.

HBO

Glad I did not throw away my money and buy the complete Taken Collection on Blu-ray

Maybe if the Dougray Scott character gets out of jail they can do Taken 4

Always throws me that Dougray Scott was playing the same role played by Xander Berkeley in the first movie...

Scream IV Paramount Blu-Ray 2023
Jenna Ortega, Courtney Cox. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett
Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage.

To call the story convoluted would be an understatement, yet I found the film just entertaining enough. The suspense scenes and the kills seemed much more brutal than my memory of the previous films. My only problem was how many characters were able to survive being stabbed and nearly disemboweled.

My 14 year old son wants to watch a series of movies he hasn’t seen before, so we’re gonna watch the X-men movies… so we started with this classic from 2000.

Tonight we’ll watch X-2.

Knights of the Zodiac Sony Blu-Ray
Sean Bean, Famke Janssen, Mark Dacascos. Directed by Tomasz Biginski 2023
When a goddess of war reincarnates in the body of a young girl, street orphan Seiya discovers that he is destined to protect her and save the world. But only if he can face his own past and become a Knight of the Zodiac.

Fantasy Action film that often achieves the visual aesthetic of CGI cut-scenes in many computer games. Lots of combat, lots of loud music, and wall-to-wall effects. The established supporting actors add a lot of texture to the film, but the young leads didn't make much of an impression on me. I lost interest about half-way through, particularly after the young hero's long, cliched "Training" sequence with a dull, inexpressive mentor. Essentially an Anime film in Live-Action drag.

Laserblast Full Moon Pictures Blu-Ray
Kim Milford. Directed by Michael Rae 1978
An ostracized teen stumbles upon an alien weapon, which transforms him into a grotesque killer.

I first saw "Laserblast" as a terrific episode of "MST3K', but this is my first time watching the straightforward unedited version. As "B" movies go, it has a solid story with some interesting ideas. However, the low budget means that the film has to be padded out with lots of leisurely exposition scenes and the director just doesn't have the style to overcome this and create any real pace. That being said, it's mildly entertaining if you enjoy "Drive-In" fodder from The Seventies.

Amazon Prime

It was a movie that ran for 2 hrs and 5 minutes and did not know it was originally a TV show -eek-

Kind of cheesy and Hemsworth is not the best actor but it made for a entertaining Fri night movie.

Roku Channel but if you have AMC+ you can watch it there without the annoying ads

A Michael Jackson impersonator meets up with a Marilyn Monroe impersonator to join a commune of people that impersonate famous people and celebrities.

Werner Herzog played a priest.

I thought I found a hidden gem but it was slow and boring.

I did not understand how the nuns figured into the story or what was the meaning of that plot in the storyline.

Invaders From Mars Ignite Films 4K blu-ray
Directed by William Cameron Menzies 1953
A young boy learns that space aliens are taking over the minds of earthlings.

Back in the Mid-Sixties, my grade school would occasionally older show movies in the gym on a Friday night, 25 cents a ticket. One of those was "Invaders From Mars" and it scared the hell out of me at the time.
Looking at it today, -dated as it is, -it still retains its power as nightmare fuel. Menzies lauded production design remains impressive, as is his use of color. It's surprisingly intense for a film that centers around a young boy. Ignite Films has provided a wonderful restoration and a whole host of informative supplements.

The Truman Show (1998) — Seen this one numerous times, including in the theater, and still holds up so well, and is engrossing from beginning to end. It was the first time seeing how versatile Jim Carrey was. Just a great all around movie. ****˝/***** (4K Ultra HD)

MGM + on demand

It seemed like a excuse for Seth Green to hang out with his buddies like Brecken Meyer and Macauley Culkin in Thailand and then film a movie.

Maybe he met Brenda Song in this movie before they became partners?

A Randy Orton cameo too.

Pluto

Had to put up with their annoying ad breaks and it came out in 2013 and was not in HD?

WTF??

Still worth a watch and revisit the nostalgia and history of the drive-in.

I had no idea some desperate owners switched to porn in the 70's to keep their theaters open.

There is another documentary like this about movie palaces which is also worth watching and that one was in HD when I saw it on TCM a couple of years ago.

Night of the Lepus TCM
Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh. Directed by Wm F Claxton. 1972
A small Arizona town is overrun by giant, rampaging rabbits.

It's a silly premise, but everyone involved is taking it very seriously. There's a lot of old Pros in the cast doing yeoman work. The director and the production work very hard to make the rabbits a credible threat. You have real rabbits filmed in slow motion to look like thundering giants; there's also bunnies with stage blood smeared on their muzzle, and an occasional puppet for close-up attacks. However, it was all just a little pedestrian for me. I hate to say it, but it lacks the over-the-top performances and Theatricality that it takes to be a truly great "Bad Film".

CODA - really enjoyed this. I was familiar with Emilia Jones from the Locke & Key Netflix series, and she was really great in this movie and she has a lovely voice.

Cellar Dweller Arrow Blu-ray
Deborah Farentino, Jeffrey Combs. Directed by John Carl Buechler 1988
In the 1930s a horror-comic artist's creations come alive and kill him. Years later a new cartoonist revives the creatures in his house, now part of an artist's colony.

A Direct-to-VHS Horror film from Empire Pictures and Charles Band. If you appreciate "B" movies done on the cheap, you can have a pretty decent time, and it certainly doesn't overstay it's welcome. Of course, if you know how Comics are made, there are a few laughable moments (the artist draws directly on the page in ink with no layout). Since it's an Arrow disc, it looks quite good, and there are some great supplements that really enhance the experience.

The rock music back in 2001 now sounds so dated and is Kip Pardue working in a car wash now?

Gina Gershon was a stunner back then though she is not hideous now.

Beau Is Afraid Lion's Gate Blu-Ray
Joaquin Phoenix Written and Directed by Ari Aster 2023
Following the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home.

Back in April I had a brief hospital stay that seriously disrupted my sleep patterns. A week later I saw "Beau" with a friend, and I must have dozed through 80% of the film. My pal thought it was the best movie of the year, and I was too embarrassed to mention that I had missed most of it.
So, I'm seeing it again for the first time. Phoenix is terrific, and the performances in general are dynamic. Aster stages some bravura tableaus of Horror, Fantasy, and psychological mayhem. He's really good at creating a nightmare world. However, I'm just not sure yet what to make of it. It's far too long at three hours and there are show-off sequences that are very effective, but I'm not sure if they really add something necessary to the final product. In fact, I don't know if I'm supposed to know what the end means and if I'm supposed to be satisfied with it. I won't dismiss it, though.
