Tetris Apple+
Taron Egerton
Businessman Henk Rogers risks everything in the race to license and patent the video game Tetris from Russia in the late 1980s during the Cold War.

As this deals with a video game I was expecting something more tongue-in-cheek, but I found it to be a surprisingly effective Thriller. Egerton is excellent and the video game aspect and our familiarity with the time period (and what will happen down the road) adds a certain amount of charm to the preceedings.

The Werewolf of Washington Kino Classics Blu-Ray
Dean Stockwell. Directed by Milton Moses Ginsberg 1973
A reporter who has had an affair with the daughter of the U.S. President is sent to Hungary. There he is bitten by a werewolf, and then gets transferred back to Washington, where he gets a job as press assistant to the President.

This one is a bit of a curio. The director was never happy with the 90-minute release version (which was essentially stolen from him), so he's edited together an approximately 79-minute version all these years later. This is a threadbare low-budget effort where every line spoken has a slight echo to it. It mixes Old School Horror (the Werewolf and his transformation are right out of The Forties) and Political Satire (this was made during The Nixon Administration). It is well-intentioned but it's a bit too restrained and the satire lacks "bite", if you'll pardon the pun. Dean Stockwell was in a rough patch in his career and he definitely commits to the role. I can appreciate the effort of the filmmakers, but I can't really recommend it.

Commando - not among Schwarzenegger's best action movies IMO, but it is iconic for his one-liners as he dispatches the villains.

Hulu

Maybe this is on Shudder too which I don't have since it their logo appears in the opening credits.

Rebecca Hall was great in this and Tim Roth too.

This had a weird strange ending

Yeah, there's a corny but cute little montage at the beginning showing Arnold and Alyssa's characters doing father/daughter stuff together like fishing, swimming, eating ice cream, and practicing self-defense moves.

Violent Night - Santa Claus (played by David Harbour from Stranger Things) takes on a group of mercenaries holding a family hostage on Christmas Eve. Fun movie, and it lives up to its title with some pretty brutal fight scenes.

Significant Other - small sci-fi/horror flick on Paramount+, starring Maika Monroe (It Follows) and the guy who played the intern on the last season of The Office and he was also in S1 of The White Lotus. Interesting movie--the first half is kind of an eerie psychological thriller that builds up the tension, then it becomes an alien monster movie (which is not a spoiler since that's set up in the very first scene of the movie). Not a great movie, but as a fan of the genre, I enjoyed it.

Starz

With all the nudity it could have gotten a NC-17 rating.

Odessa Young was probably naked for over half of the movie and way too much footage of Josh O' Connor in the buff.

Overall a slow and confusing movie and wished Colin Firth and Olivia Coleman had more screen time.

Barbarian (2022) - horror movie that I enjoyed a good bit. In the dedicated DVDTalk thread it appears opinions are mixed. If you plan to watch it, though, I think it's best to go in completely unspoiled.

I remember seeing a trailer for "Barbarian" in the theater and really couldn't make heads or tails of it (now having seen the film I understand why). I took a shot when it popped up on HBOMax and really enjoyed it. One of those cases where it's not the story, but how you tell it.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Sony
Tom Hardy. Directed by Andy Serkis 2021
Investigative journalist Eddie Brock attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the host of the symbiote Carnage and escapes prison after a failed execution.

I suppose the "Venom" movies are a guilty pleasure for me, because I do enjoy them for the most part, even though there's a bit too much slapstick and CGI "goo" for my taste.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sony Pictures
Directed by Joachim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Dave Callaham. 2023
Miles Morales catapults across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero.

Excellent film. I saw "The Little Mermaid" last week and though it's about the same running time, "Spider-Verse" is a breeze to sit through in comparison. I hope the eventual 4K/Blu-Ray has some extensive "Making of" features because there were so many times I wanted to "rewind" the film to study what was going on visually. My only "Theatrical" complaint: I was waiting for the usual voice credit crawl so that I could put names to voices but the credits were only on screen for a blip. Luckily, there's IMDB.

Showtime

Based on a true story and a A24 film and worth checking out.

At first
Spoiler:
I was scared it would end in a brutal horrible hate crime but it turned out all right at the end which is rare for a A24 film

The Colony (aka "Tides"), 2021 - low budget, post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie (but not the 2013 "The Colony" starring Laurence Fishburne). This one stars French actress Nora Arnezeder, and Iain Glen from Game of Thrones. It starts out pretty good and sucked me in with the characters, but ultimately it doesn't go anywhere very interesting. Nora Arnezeder was very good, though, and I may seek out more of her work.

Amazon Prime

This was a turd and a misleading poster where Baldwin is only in a few scenes.

Maybe this is the kind of movie he will be doing after the murder?

Amazon should give me digital credits or another free trial of Prime for this piece of s.

Maggie - kind of a slow drama about a father (Arnold Schwarzenegger) taking care of his teenage daughter as she slowly turns into a zombie.

Vivarium - an unsettling horror movie about a young couple (Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots) who end up trapped in a surreal suburban development. Pretty weird and I liked it.

Unseen MGM+
Midori Francis, Jolene Purdy. Directed by Yoko Okumura 2023
Sam, -a cashier at a convenience store, - receives a call from Emily, a nearly blind woman who is running from her murderous ex in the woods. She must survive the ordeal with Sam being her eyes using video call.

A short but clever Thriller, I found it totally absorbing -until a "plot complication" at the climax of the film that is so cartoonish and over-the-top that the film lost me completely.

The Street Fighter Shout Factory Blu-Ray
Sonny Chiba. Directed by Shijehiro Ozawa. 1974
"The Street Fighter" establishes the rise of Terry (Chiba), a hired gun who's caught in the middle of trouble when he resists the power of the Yakuza by refusing a kidnapping job.

A fairly basic Crime Story that really delivers every time Sonny Chiba is on screen. Unlike a lot of "Tough Guy" actors of the period, Chiba is very expressive and fights with a lot of emotion and rage. The fights are frequent and incredibly brutal.
