Stormtroopers of Death: Kill Yourself- The Movie (2003)

The synopsys at the back made it look like it was some bizarre cult horror film mixed with metal music. A bit like Kiss meets the Phantom or something. But it was in fact just a series of live performances from a shit thrash-punk band with only their name going for them: Stormtroopers of Death! Not my cup of tea! I'm more a Hawkwind kind of guy!

Knight Errant (1973)

Rather stupid and the fights weren't impressive at all. The hero who I'm told had a big career in Hong Kong and Taipei in the 70s wasn't impressive at all. He looked like Martin Short doing pseudo kung fu kicks.

LA FEMME FLIC (1979)

One in a thousand 70s french 'policier' films (cop films) that they were so fond of doing back then. Here they added a bit of spice with a feminist agenda showing how difficult it was for a female detective to suceed in this very macho milieu. Especially since she cares about justice whereas higher powers care more about protecting the rich and powerful in the small town she was posted in. Not the best of the genre by far but always fun to watch 70s french policier films once in a while.

It was not that bad though Ice Cube was probably miscast as the hero. The prison escape scene was the best part of the movie.

Tone Bell and Ego Nwodim from SNL were in it.

It had some funny moments and better than what I expected.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) — When I first saw this somewhere back in the late 90s or early 00s, I disliked it. Second time around, though, I fucking hated it. Just a cash grab with no soul to go along with bad acting (though to be fair, the writing was awful, so maybe can't blame the cast too much), lame story and laughably terrible visual effects. They might as well used the same method as in the TV series, just put an actor in a suit standing among miniatures; was really grating seeing two bad CGI characters going one on one. 1.0/5

5ive Girls (2006) — Certainly not great and some so-so acting and lines of dialogue (save for Jordan Madley who actually wasn't half bad), but I found it mildly entertaining which says something as I'm generally not a big fan of possession-type movies. 2.75/5

The Scarehouse (2014)
— Okay revenge horror movie with some gross kills and decent enough acting from the two leads. Not terribly memorable but deserves a rental. 3.25/5

Master Smut (or should it be Lord Smut!?), in the motus operandi of this thread it says you have to write a little something about each film you post. It can be just a note or a one word description. It gives others a chance to comment on it. If you prefer not to, which is also legitimate, there's another thread with just 'title-dropping'. :rock2:

Blood from the mummy's tomb (1971)

A Hammer 'Mummy' film starring the voluptous Valerie Leon (who was known back thenm as the 'Everything but the nipple' girl. Because she would show tantalising cleavage but never topless nudity!) as the daughter of an egyptologist who strangely resembles a cursed embalmed egyptian princess her dad and his friends discovered on an expedition. And lo and behold, the spirit of the dead queen reenters the body of the innocent girl and chaos and mmurder ensue! Hourra!
The film itself was 'cursed' with problems of its own. Peter Cushing had started the shoot but left after one day to take care of his wife who had become suddenly ill (she died a few days later). The director also died one week before the end of a cardiac arrest. The writer was banned from the set, the actress was banned from attending the director's funeral and so on. It still is a fun 70s Hammer to watch.

First Man (2018)

I guess it didn't succeed because Armstrong wasn't a very charismatic nor sympathetical man and makes for apoor hero. But nonetheless, I liked Chazelle's take on that story, showing us more the family side and what price all his entourage has to pay for his dedication. The in-capsule scenes were quite stressfully shot. It must have been nice on the big screen.

This is airing on Cinemax.

It was pretty good and Hoechlin gave a great performance.

Now I know the story of the maker of the gym equipment I use at home.

Excess Baggage (1997) — Remember when Alicia Silverstone was a star? Back in the mid-90s, thanks to Clueless, her stock rose to the point she 1. played Batgirl in Batman & Robin (which came out the same year as this) and even got a 2-picture deal with Columbia Pictures, Excess Baggage being the first from her production company, First Kiss. Spoiler, a second one wasn't made (according to IMDb, there was a 2005 TV movie directed by Danny DeVito made).

Anyway, talking about that because there's really not much to the movie itself. Del Toro and Silverstone were fine, but nothing special and even someone like Christopher Walken was rather mundane. Didn't hate it, just is one of those 90s movies people forgot about (and rightfully so). 2.75/5

I remember watching that on cable in the 90's

Do you remember Hideaway?

Jeremy Sisto's breakout role.

Son of the Pink Panther (1993)

I'd seen this at the theatre when it came out and remember thinking the best part was the Bobby McFerrin version of the theme in the intro cartoon. Almost 30 years later it's still pretty bleak with Kato and Dreyfuss all but wasted and Benigni tring toomuch to be like Sellers. How many times Blake Edwards tried to revive the franchise after Sellers' death? But you can't replace him.

The Dirty Dozen (1968)

Somehow I had missed this war 'classic' until now. Pretty silly plot but fun to watch.

The Last Starfighter (1984)

Fun 80s Star Wars rip-off more geared towards younger audiences. I've seen this a few times and like to revisit every few years. Great bonus documentary on the creation of the CGI special effects for which the film was a pionneer (along with Tron but that doesn't have that much CGI in it no matter what people think). Of course the fx are now dated but they still are impressive from a historical perspective. Just plain family fun.

Les rivières pourpres (2000)

Not as bad second time around as when I'd seen it on the big screen back then. Although the ever-moving camera is annoying and there are some ridiculous scenes (the kung-fu fight, the avalanche, etc.), the police inquest is believable. Not a must by any means but if you like seeing a different kind of police film...
