King Kong (1976) - I was too young to see this in the theaters, but I did see it a few years later on TV. I had nightmares for months. While it's not very good, it's still the movie I think of first when you say King Kong.

Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
Amy Steel as Ginny is still the best part of a film that is essentially a tight remake of the film that preceded it. |

Kind of boring I don't see what the big deal is about Shaileene Woodley |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
The Thing (2011) - Unnecessary prequel that in many ways undermines the 1982 film. Still, I'll pretty much watch (or in this case re-watch) anything with MEW. I always thought she should have become a much bigger star.

Top Hat (1935) - Saturday morning HBOMax selection. A threadbare misunderstanding plot serves as the foundation for some of the most famous song and dance numbers ever in movies. I thought it was worth watching just for those, but I'm not a big Astaire fan.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
The Men's Club - I've been watching a lot of Roy Scheider movies in the last few months. In this one he is joined by a lot of character actors/"almost stars" (Keitel, Langella, David Dukes, Richard Jordan, Treat Williams, and the guy from Body Double who looks a little like Bill Maher) in a movie about a group of guys who get together to talk about stuff. Ann Dusenberry aside, the film is pretty tedious. And even for Ann Dusenberry you would probably be better off watching Basic Training or her National Lampoon movie. I saw this movie once years and years ago. I doubt I'll be watching it again anytime soon.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Sicario: Day of the Soldado - not bad, but not nearly as compelling as the first movie.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) - John Carpenter's Rio Bravo remains one of my favorite of his films. It had been awhile since I had seen it. I think of Kim Richards getting killed as what kicks off the the movie, but that doesn't happen until about a half hour into it.

The Phantom (1996) — Campy fun of a time. Seen this a few times over the years and while he does look goofy in the purple outfit, Billy Zane is good in the role and a shame this didn't get a follow-up. A bit surprising there hasn't been some sort of series adaptation of the material. ***¼/*****
The Doorman (2020) — Okay suspense-thriller, has elements of Die Hard. Not the best material but I guess some interesting direction and the stunts were passable. Even though she's not the strongest actress, I generally like Ruby Rose and she's fine in the lead as is Jean Reno reminding us he's alive and well (can't remember the last movie I saw him in). As direct-to-video movies go, I thought it was entertaining enough. ***/***** |

Well I differ, I found it a worthy prequel and when watched back to back with Carpenter's version it makes a real Thing-fest. I loved it.

Three Days of the Condor - This week's Redford. I saw this about 15-20 years ago, but it didn't make much of an impression. I liked it more this time, but I still thought it lost steam in the last half hour or so.

** (out of ****) I was interested in the premise of a man trapping the devil in his basement, (I always liked the Twilight Zone episode), but boy did this this take the ball and fumble it. Now if you are visiting someone who says they trapped the devil in his basement, aren't these are some of the questions that would immediately spring into your mind: Where did you find him? How did you know it was the devil? How did you trap the devil in your basement? None of these are asked. There were so many times when i was bewildered at the way things played out and people acted, it just was not credible. The film is a half hour concept spread over a badly written and acted 82 minutes. What a disappointment. |

Lust For a Vampire Shout! Blu-Ray Ralph Bates. Directed by Jimmy Sangster. 1971 Through the unholy rites of black magic, the notorious female vampire Carmilla Karnstein is reincarnated as a luscious young debutante (stunning Swedish starlet Yutte Stensgaard). But when the depraved seductress is enrolled at an exclusive girls' school, she begins to inflame the desires of her fellow students as well as her weak-willed teacher (Ralph Bates). “Lust For a Vampire” is the second of Hammer Film's "Carmilla” trilogy of lesbian vampire stories from the '70s. Good PQ, good features, but the film itself can't help but coming off as a bit laughably mannered at times. However, this was a period where Hammer was really embracing the "R" rating and the film features lots of gore, nudity, and sexuality. Honestly, when I was 15 and wasn't allowed to see "R"-rated movies, this is what I thought all "R-rated" movies were like. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...raveposter.jpg From Beyond The Grave TCM Ian Ogilvy, Donald Pleasance. Directed by Kevin Connor. 1974 Four customers buy or steal items from Temptations Limited, an antique shop whose motto is "Offers You Cannot Resist". A nasty fate awaits those who cheat the shop's proprietor. One of those Horror Anthology films Amicus used to turn out all the time in The '70s ("Tales From the Crypt", "The Vault of Horror"). This is one of their better efforts, with a solid cast featuring Peter Cushing and David Warner among others. |

Turistas (2006) The theatrical and Unrated cut is on HBO Max. I had not seen this since DVD around 2007. I watched the Unrated cut last night. I initially liked it when I saw it years ago, but upon another viewing, you could see how stupid and naive these characters were. |

Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)
An iconic entry for the franchise as it marks the point where Jason Voorhees gains his signature look. I've always enjoyed how absolutely goofy this film is, whether its the awkward 3-D effects setups or Rachel Howard's acting on a staircase. It also has a few kills I absolutely love and of course Dana Kimmell being a complete badass. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Mr & Mrs Smith (1941) - The Hitchcock one not the Pitt/Jolie film. I thought it was fun for a while, but the premise got stretched a bit too far.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Iron Man 3 - I started a MCU re-watch in August. I don't think I need to say anything more about the movies.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Memories of Murder (2003)
Though I've watched this film countless times, this marked the first time I had seen it in an actual theater. The Digitally Remastered release put out by Neon & Fathom Events was fantastic, as was the Q&A following the film with Director Edgar Wright. Absolutely love this film. Shame that more people weren't able to pack theaters to see this special two-night screening. |
Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
The Sentinel (1977) - Cristina Raines is a beautiful woman, and the film is strangely populated with people who were stars and people who would become stars. It's a different movie that isn't always ineffective, but it just got too weird for me.
