The Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

Okay, I live in an area where both of these will be readily available with less than an hour drive. I might try to take in both, but I would like to see it opening night and I know there is no 48 fps within my immediate vicinity. If your first viewing was going to be regular 3D, and you could see it again on either IMAX or the 48FPS format, which would you choose?

I can do both, but I choose to do 48 FPS.

List of "HFR 3D" theaters: http://www.48fpsmovies.com/48-fps-theater-list/

Well, in my town the 48fps presentation is going to be in an IMAX theater...so I'm not sure how to vote.

I live very close to both. If 48fps was offered in 2D then that would have been my choice.

That would be the bee's knees. I'd much prefer 48fps 2D over any other option.

It will still be digital.

Looks like I'm 20 minutes away from 2 different 48fps theaters so I'll do that.

Are there any theaters in SoCal that is showing it at 48FPS and Dolby Atmos besides Arclight Sherman Oaks? I see that both Century City 15 and Burbank 16 have Dolby Atmos listed on the ETX screen, but on the Fandango the ETX showing isn't listed as HFR.

Hmm...but isn't Tyson's IMAX one of those fake ones? Or at least the ones that are retrofitted to be such.

Although I can't argue with the banana dance.

I can both, also close enough to do DOLBY ATMOS.

But I am going to go with 48FPS. From everything I am hearing this will blow people away, and Peter has stated that his intent was that Hobbit should be seen in 48FPS.

Re: Th Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

Any IMAX theater showing it in 48fps will be a digital/lie-MAX theater. While there wil be both 2D and 3D IMAX showings in 15/70 across the world, none for obvious reasons will be in 48fps. There's a list on IMAX's website on which specific IMAX locations will be 48fps compatible on December 14th.

There's only three theaters here in town projecting the film in 48fps:
  • An indepedent chain that'll project it in Dolby Digital HFR 3D and Dolby Atmos.
  • Cinemark will have it in HFR 3D on one of their two XD screens.
  • Regal will have it in IMAX HFR 3D in one of their three IMAX locations.

Obviously, I'll be seeing it in Dolby Digital HFR 3D. I was at Cinemacon and yes, the 48fps looked like a BBC production on the big screen. I'm still curious on how it'll play out at nearly three hours, but my expectations are low.

Re: Th Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

I don't have too much interest in the Hobbit since I wasn't a big LotR fan, but I might watch this in 48 fps just because of the curiosity factor and if a bunch of friends are going.

I'll see it both ways but in IMAX first.

Re: Th Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

Can anyone in Chicago help me pick a theater? I live in Wheaton. Cantera, Yorktown, Naperville and South Barrington are all within 20 minutes of my house. I'd be willing to go to the ICON downtown if Atmos is worth it.

My sister in law from London is coming to stay with us during Christmas. She's a professional digital animator working on feature films, I want to take her to the best possible 48fps presentation of the movie, not matter the cost or driving time (within reason).

Re: Th Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

Since this is the first major 48 fps presentation I don't think there is a big consensus on which is better yet.

Re: Th Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

I will be seeing it in 48 fps. But just because it's playing at the nearest theater that I go to. Really, if it wasn't there, I wouldn't pursue it.

I expect an eyegasm.

The AMC 15 mins away has both options so I will be checking it out in 48fps and Atmos.

Well the clear choice would be the HFR 3D with the Dolby Atmos, do you know if that theater is also a HFR theater?

Yes, HFR 3D and Atmos. Only one in the state, apparently. A bit of a haul from my house, is Atmos worth it?

Edit: forget it. It's one of those "movie and dinner" places. Cant stand the sounds and smells of other people eating.

Re: Th Hobbit: IMAX vs. 48fps

I decided to watch it in 48fps first. Here they have two theaters that are showing it in 48fps but one is reserved seating. I didn't want to stand in long lines and get a poor seat, which happen to me when I watched The Avengers.
