Re: The "I hate A CHRISTMAS STORY" thread
Don't love it, don't hate it, but have always wondered what all the affection was for. I'm assuming that it's because it reminds many of their own childhoods/families...but beyond that I'm not sure. Then again, there's also a group that loves CHRISTMAS VACATION, which is really just a so-so film - although I'll confess to liking it more than A CHRISTMAS STORY.
As for myself, LOVE ACTUALLY is the Christmas movie that makes me laugh over and over.

I've seen select scenes from A Christmas Story on TV, but never from beginning to end - what I have seen though hasn't really wowed me.

Re: The "I hate A CHRISTMAS STORY" thread
Growing up, I'd always avoided A Christmas Story becuase I assumed it was typical happy family holiday fare. But eventually in my 20's a friend sat me down and demanded I finalled see it, and I was surprised to find it being a much darker movie that focused more on the awkwardness and pain of growing up in a satirical fasion. It's hardly a Norman Rockwell painting, it slaps that convention right in the face.
And yeah, any movie given that kinds of overexposure will face some sort of backlash. I'm happy that honor goes to a more underhanded movie like this one, rather than something more traditional.
Does it really matter that it's on a 24-hour marathon anymore? Cable companies are being replaced by streaming services. If anything be offended that yule log is on a 24-hour loop. Do they still do that?

It could be worse, TBS could play Ron Howard's The Grinch on a 24 hour loop. You want that?! Huh?!!

Oh god, The Grinch is a total crap-fest. "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny" is "Citizen Kane" compared to that!
The thing I hate about "A Christmas Story" is the overenthusiastic narration. And yes, I know it's by the guy who actually wrote the damn thing, but it still annoys me. And I think turkey is highly overrated- I'd let the dogs eat it and have Chinese food instead!

Wow, people actually justify not liking a film because they disagree with the food preferences of the characters. That's some serious reaching there.

The Real Bully
The bully in A Christmas Story was supposed to be Grover Dill not Scut Farkus. The excerpt from the script below shows that Grover Dill was supposed to be the bully and Scut Farkus, the toadie. This would have been more true to Jean Shepherd’s book In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash on which A Christmas Story is based. However, on set when A Christmas Story director, Bob Clark was presented with his Grover Dill (Yano Anaya) and Scut Farkus (Zack Ward) characters he took one look at them and made a switch. Clark said: “Okay, you get his lines and he gets yours.” And just that quickly the toadie was promoted to bully.

I think the director made the right call.

I love the movie and make it a point turn the channel to TBS during the 24 hr event just to have it on in the background.

I love a Christmas Story. It's a classic 80s comedy. And like so many of the best comedies of the 80s, it has pitch perfect timing. Compare that to today with it either be heavy scatology or really drawn improv-fests (thank you Judd Apatow)

Well, since I'm an old fart, I saw this in the (virtually empty) theater when it was new, and not expecting anything, I was really taken with it - it's all about expectations. I didn't know a damn thing about it, and from the title, I wasn't particularly interested, and for the time, it was more than a little subversive.
Now, you're told that you're supposed to love it, so your expectations are already way too high.

I prefer Bob Clark's other family film I got to see when it first became an 80s phenomenon - Porky's.

See, this is what I don't get. You do realize that the naration is intended to be sarcastic, right?

This movie has grown on me over the years. I used to simply tolerate it, but now I wholeheartedly love it. There are very few movies that make me smile as much as this one. It's honest and innocent, and the comedy hits consistently (at least for me). I think the narration is absolutely perfect.

Did not like A Christmas Story as a kid and I hate it even more as an adult.
If I'm watching something by Bob Clark it's Black Christmas.
