Ok, how about this? Owen immediately dismisses any need for a protocol droid. Even if he doesn't recognize 3PO, because he treats his droids like refrigerators or whatever, shouldn't he recognize that he had a droid just like this one who used to help on his farm when he was younger?

Yeah I sort of agree. Even if he didn't realize it right away you would think that the idea might cross his mind after a bit that it could be the same droid. Although Owen didn't really have much interaction with C3PO or R2D2 aside from purchasing them and I guess like mentioned there are a bunch of protocol droids that look similar.

Doesn't he pick 3PO out from the Jawas specifically because he needs him to talk to binary load lifters or whatever he says?

And when 3PO confirms this, his first response is "I have no need for a protocol droid" and seems about to move on before 3PO puts on the hard sell and tells him how he has programmed binary load lifters, similar to Owen's moisture vaporators.

I've always had the impression (even before the prequels) Owen wants the droids memories wiped for a reason besides reprogramming them

Yeah, that bugged me, too. You sort of have to assume that he fixed up a trashed droid even though he claims he built him.

Considering there are Protocol Droids all over the galaxy, Anakin didn't really build C-3PO from scratch. He found all the parts and rebuilt a protocol droid. C-3PO did exist before Anakin got a hold of him. He might be build out of dozens of droids for all we know. Arm from this one, head from that one, etc. Watto's shop probably had the computers that allowed him to add to C-3PO's programming. He probably has all the basic programming that all protocol droids have.

Yeah I agree. Honestly that's one of the bigger things that bothers me about the Prequel Trilogy in general that Anakin is the one to have built C3PO. Just way too convenient.

Sphero, the company behind BB-8, has announced they will be marketing a toy based on the character.

I have heard it explained before by comparing droids to toaster ovens. People don't really see droids as being like them. People see droids as an appliance to be used, like a toaster oven. Do you remember the toaster oven that you owned 20 years ago? I doubt it. So why would Owen recognize a droid he owned 20 years ago?

I've never quite bought that analogy. A toaster is always sort of out of the way that you don't really pay much attention to, where a protocol droid is somewhat more hands-on. I'd say it would be closer to a Speak & Spell or Atari 2600 or something, where in the very least if you saw another one you'd say, "Hey, I used to have of these!"

Also, that crushed Darth Vader helmet reminds me of unmasked Jason from Friday the 13th Part VIII.
