Re: Cop Land (Dir: James Mangold) 1997 Cop drama w/ Stallone
I remember seeing Copland in the summer of 1997 and being very disappointed. I saw the trailers and with the heavyweight cast, I set my expectations way too high.
I then got it on a DVD a few years later, and after watching it with tempered expectations, I really liked the movie. There are flaws in it, but overall it does have great replay value as I have watched many times after on DVD then BluRay. And the score is great too!

re: Cop Land: Overrated or Underrated?
Aaron Copland is one of America's greatest composers. Not overrated at all.

I found Copland to be a good film, it has its flaws but the acting elevates the material. IMO it has Sylvester Stallone's best performance.
It also has one of Ray Liotta's best right up there with Goodfellas, Something Wild, Field of Dreams & Narc.

I’m really surprised this was not even nominated for a single Oscar. No awards really at all. I love this movie more and more I see it. How Sly didn’t win let alone even be nominated for Oscar is ridiculous. This is a masterful performance and a great film.

Went to see it at the cinema back in 97 and enjoyed it. Rewatched it last year and enjoyed it a lot more. Its a solid movie and Stallone does a great job.

It was a really good movie. Had quality acting by Stallone. At the time of its release it was given critical acclaim and props to Stallone for his performance which is pretty much exactly what it deserved.
Not over OR under rated, IMO.

Underrated. As many have mentioned, has one of the best casts ever put together (in my mind, Stallone, Rappaport, Peter Berg, and Robert Patrick are especially good)...
Would also agree with others saying that this is way better than The Departed (which I can't stand)...and I know its sacrilegious, but I too prefer this movie over Goodfellas...
James Mangold is a little hit or miss for me, but of his other movies my next favorite would probably be his remake 3:10 to Yuma...I still think that movie is a little underrated...Ben Foster is awesome in that...

De Niro is also great in Cop Land. that scene where he loses it because the case was taken away from him was great...
and that 3:10 remake is damned good! of course, Logan ain't no slouch. i like Mangold for the most part. Walk the Line one of my all-time favs. Identity was pretty good. I loved Girl, Interrupted, even though many people didn't, but Jolie did win an Oscar. i don't think it was an Oscar worthy performance and all done better in One Flew Over..., but still good director. Surprised Cop Land was only his second directed movie...

I do like Logan, even though I thought it was a little overrated (I didn't think it deserved a nomination for Best Screenplay)...Jackman and Stewart were great...
Walk the Line was a good movie in my mind, but didn't leave me wanting to watch it again anytime soon...
I bought Identity recently and was really looking forward to watching it, especially after reading up on the cast...Unfortunately, the Blu-Ray started skipping about 15 minutes in so I had to turn it off...I should've went back to the store and exchanged it but it just didn't seem worth the drive when you consider I think I only paid $8.00 for it...I still hope to watch it in the future...
Completely agree with you on Girl, Interrupted, that was a great movie. My second favorite Angelina Jolie performance after Gia...
