The PG-13 thing is going to kill them. There should not have been any discussion on making this a PG-13 film. Hope they learn from it and EX4 goes back to R

Well it was fun while it lasted, will still check this out in theaters like I have the previous two. Even if they do an EX4 I'd expect a pretty big dropoff in returning cast members. I think it's played itself out imo, and I'd rather Stallone make that last Rambo movie next...

Re: The Expendables 3
I thought this was the best of the series because of Mel Gibson and the entire 3rd act. Gibson played a fantastic villain. Too bad he's such a piece of shit in real life because he's such actor and I would love to see him act more.
The entire third act was perfect Expendables. Unbelievable odds, ridiculous situations and a campy ending. Loved it.
Wesley Snipes had the single funniest line in the movie.
In the end it's an Expendables movie. You know what you're getting into. If you expect any more from it you'll be disappointed.

I'm still going to pay to see it. I'm not remotely tempted by the torrents or some ripping it for the rating.

I know you aren't doing it, but I think torrenting something because you disagree with the decision about the rating is kind of two-faced anyway. If I made a decision not to see a film or to boycott it, I wouldn't then turn around and watch it, just in a format from which no one would profit. I think it should be one or the other, either stand by what I said or forgo it.

Saw this today.
Boring as fuck. Generic action. Bland music. Ugh. Generic as hell. I guess the plot was the best of them all. I don't know. Just... wow. So boring. They had all this opportunity to something good and it's wasted. $90 million and your action doesn't even have an impact to it.

Re: The Expendables 3
Watching Harrison Ford onscreen has become painful. Nevermind acting, the guy seems to have difficulty breathing/talking or something. Like he struggles to have any of his grumbling or mumbling sound coherent or able to be understood clearly.

I still thought the film was fine for what it was. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but in line with the other films in the series and I thought it was pretty decent.

Then, get rid of any cast member that is not willing to commit 100% to the production (starting with Jet Li - boot his overcharging ass out of the franchise). No more endless cameos. One or two can be fun. Three or four is pushing it. Five or more is excessive.
Also, remember that not everyone needs an action sequence. You have Harrison Ford. He was great as Drummond and much better than Willis. However, he doesn't need to be in the field. He is the man with the plan. Stallone is the man to execute the plan. Keep that dynamic. If you need to get Ford into the mix, he's there to pass on valuable intel in key moments. That's it.
On the subject of character dynamics, make the Expendables more distinctive. I like the nods to the actor's personal histories but there isn't anything very distinctive about them. Hell, the only distinctive character was Lee Christmas with his blades but then they brought in Doc and he has the same gimmick. Banderas was a breath of fresh air as the lethal motormouth. He was basically a badass version of Shane Black's character in Predator. In fact, look to that movie as a key way to make your characters distinct if you insist on keeping them all over-the-top.
As for action. No more shaky cam, extreme close ups, or quick cutting. People are not fooled by that bullshit. Get Jeff Imada or someone equivalent to properly train your actors how to at least look like they can fight. Just because you have an actual trained fighter in your cast doesn't mean they know how to show off for the camera. Work with them in order to properly showcase them. The same holds true for gunplay and any other type of action sequences.
I enjoyed it but it still has its issues and could be improved.

Re: The Expendables 3
Being "fine" w/ something like EX3 and thinking it was decent is just wrong. That's what keeps genres to be crap. Thanks, Mike86.
People should bitch about mediocrity in these action films.
Expendables, as a franchise, is about a group of badasses kicking ass. And technically... that does happen. It just doesn't happen in any badass fashion. They just do. You don't feel the badassness in the action aside from these little bits of fun. Predator has a group of badasses that succeeds in promoting that visual. And you know what? You feel like that even though these guys are badasses they're still very much have limits and can die. And they do. We don't feel ANYTHING from the Expendables. It's just shooting and fighting but we don't care about these characters. We may care about the actors doing their thing but the characters they're supposed to be? Nope.

There's a grand tradition in heist and ensemble action movies of specialist skills-the computer guy, the knife man, the athlete, the martial artist, the sniper, and so forth. One of the thing with which I've always been a little disappointed is how generic some of the roles are. What the point of having a badass martial artist if he isn't going to fight? The cast lists are immensely cool, but too many of the roles could basically be anybody. Even if all of the characters were stereotypes, man would still have more personality than how they're written. They have fiddled with that a little bit, but it'd be a lot more fun if they let each of them ham it up more like Arnold did. Yeah, nobody in The Magnificent Seven belongs in a Shakespeare play, but at least the archetypes-neurotic guy, noble leader, zen man, eager new guy, folksy populist, gambler, outsider-are strong enough for the actors to have fun with them.

I take it you didn't see 42 or Ender's Game? Ford was excellent in both.

For fuck's sake!
