Yeah Ridley is very hit and miss as a director, but he got it right with AG. I really like that film. It would be my #3 or 4 too.

Re: Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films
for me...Ridley's top films are, in no order
Alien
Blade Runner
The Duellists
Kingdom of Heaven (DC)
I've no idea where I'd rank them aside from KoH being #4.

AG did nothing for me unfortunately and I wanted to like it. Perhaps I was "gangstered" out at the time but I didn't feel like the film did anything unique. Felt very by the numbers to me.

Re: Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films
I don't see any films of his I like, though I haven't seen American Gangster nor Black Hawk Down. I positively loathed both Alien (a jump out and go boo movie) and Blade Runner (the beginning of the let's ruin a book by Philip K. Dick films) when I first saw them--which is when they first came out.
Gladiator, you're kidding me right? How can anybody put this on a list of must see movies?

Re: Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films
Is this one streaming on Netflix?
Edit: Just checked. Nope, it isn't. That's what really sucks about the death of the video rental store. If there's an older movie you want to watch , chances are it won't be at the local Red Box. Your only option is Netflix or Blockbuster, and if it isn't streaming, you have to wait until you've returned what you have to get it, which could be several days. By then, your desire to watch the movie might be diminished.

Wow, if a movie's good enough to watch you can't wait a couple of days to get it? Also very few video stores could ever offer complete director's catalogs. Netflix is still your best bet to see the majority of films by a director like Hitchcock or Bergman.

Re: Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films
I found American Gangster to be the most forgetable film ever. I watched it when it first came out on DVD and I dont' remember a single moment from it.
I think 1492, while flawed, is the quintesential Scott film. INCREDIBLE cinematography, lots of smoke, beautiful locations and sets. The thing RS does best is atmosphere. And his best films have atmospheres that are so complete in every detail that they feel like real places you've actually visited. I feel like I really visited LA circa 2019 and I feel like I watched Columbus come ashore in 1492.
One of his worst films, White Squal, is still a must see. It sucks because its script sucks, but the locations and photography and atention to detail make you feel like you were there.

is 1492 on DVD yet? It never seemed to be getting a release date for some reason. That's a movie that is really helped by a haunting soundtrack by Vangelis. Shame he wasn't around to do something with the music on Prometheus..
I'm a fan of Ridley's work but can't help but feel he's lost interest in the hard work necessary to produce films of the quality of his early examples. The latter ones aren't bad but they aren't anywhere near as polished or touched by the same obsessive hand as Blade Runner or Alien.

I just watched this for what seems like the millionth time (1st time on Blu) A true Masterpiece. There's so little violence except for the "Birth" scene. It relies more on a tense atmosphere building up.
Speaking of The "Birth" scene, it must've been a treat to see it for the first time with an audience in a crowded theater. I remember watching it on VHS when i was around 11 or 12. Gave me Nightmares.
As for Theatrical VS Director's cut; I prefer the theatrical cut. The problem i have with the DC is with this scene:

With that part added in the Alien becomes less of a mystery for the audience to figure out on their own. That was one of the things that made Alien so good.

This is an absolutely perfect movie. Flawless. Masterpiece. A movie to both love and admire, to both be studied and be entertained by.
Every time some loon insists, "It's a summer popcorn movie! Turn off your brain and enjoy!!", beat them about the face with a sock full of pennies and then force them to watch ALIEN until they understand.
UNTIL THEY UNDERSTAND!!!

Re: Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films
I showed my gf Alien for the first time the other night. Having seen it a dozen times myself, it was fun vicariously watching it through her. She freaked the fuck out during the chestbursting scene, and spent the rest of the film gripping my arm tight.
I sometimes wish I wasn't so desensitized to these things. I miss that thrill I used to get as a kid.

Everytime I watch this film I try to get it but just don't find it that great of a movie as others do. I will say the atmasphere was very well done and Scott is extremely detailed in creating this futuristic world. I just couldn't connect or care for Harrison Ford's Charcter. I also felt the Evil Replicant was a bit silly near the end.
I also think Deckard was Human.
