Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films

The purpose of this thread is to go through and discuss the Films Ridley Scott has directed. I was looking at his IMDB Filmography and there are a lot that I have missed.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000631/

So for each film we'll take a look at and discuss for a few days before moving on to the next movie.

I had no idea this was Ridley Scott's first film. I always thought Alien was his first. I just finished watching it this morning and liked it a lot. Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine put out great performances especially the ending.
The Duel scenes were well choreographed and i noticed how in the first two duels were intense but as the years go by you can tell the characters don't have it in them anymore and seem to realize in the end how pointless it has become.
For a first time Director Ridley did a great and job and can see why 20th century Fox hired him for Alien.

Never seen The Duellists. Probably one of the three Ridley Scott movies I haven't seen in its entirety, the other two being Thelma&Louise and Someone to Watch Over Me.

A college friend told me in 1981 that The Duellists was fantastic, but I never got around to seeing it.

Things worth noting:

1.) 1981, was 31 years ago...
2.) STILL haven't seen it? Damn.
4.) We really need this film on BD.
3.) I wasn't born yet in 1981...until 1986.

on topic: For the LONGEST time, I thought Alien was his debut film...surprised and made more sense that it wasn't.

This is like the Ridley Scott version of my Bronsonathon. I approve of it.

Is this one streaming on Netflix?

Edit: Just checked. Nope, it isn't. :( That's what really sucks about the death of the video rental store. If there's an older movie you want to watch , chances are it won't be at the local Red Box. Your only option is Netflix or Blockbuster, and if it isn't streaming, you have to wait until you've returned what you have to get it, which could be several days. By then, your desire to watch the movie might be diminished.

/\ You could also try your local library. If they don't have it, they may be able to request it from another library in their network.

Re: Revisiting Ridley Scott's Films

/\ He can't wait 3-4 days to get a disk from Netflix. There's no way he can wait a week and a half for an interlibrary loan.

Gratification delayed is grace denied!

The Duellists is terrific. It's better than 98% of Ridley Scott's output, with the exceptions of Alien and Blade Runner.

This is true

IMO
1. Alien
2. The Duellists
3. Blade Runner

Could not give 2 shits about the rest of Scott's films.

For me it's Blade Runner, then Alien, then The Duellists, then Kingdom of Heaven DC, then Black Hawk Down. Hannibal gets honorable mention for being so cartoony.

The cinematography alone in The Duellists makes it a must-see, but it has a compelling enough story to keep you riveted beyond the visual baubles. Great movie.

I've always felt Black Rain was his most underrated, but I'll wait until we get to that point.

I haven't seen it since the early 90's, but from what I remember, what hokeyboy said.

I liked BLACK RAIN a lot when I saw it in a theater, but haven't seen it since, although I keep meaning to. It may actually be my favorite Ridley Scott film.

I liked Black Rain when I first saw it a few years back. It looked dirty though...the film stock that is. Did the BD look any better than what TV probably got?

I've actually seen the Duelists and it's just OK. It certainly not as good as it sounds. The conflict between the two protagonists who battle over many years is well done, but everything else is pretty weak.

I feel utterly ashamed that I have had the Duellists on my shelf for as long as the DVD has been out, and I still have yet to watch it. Maybe this thread is the final push I needed.

Yeah. I first saw this in the very early 80's. I didn't know or care who Ridley Scott was, didn't look into such things back then just enjoyed films as I saw them, but I came in on the film a good ways into it on HBO(IIRC) and was really engrossed by it. So I made sure to find the next scheduled airing and taped it to VHS and watched it several times.

Good film. It's been too long since I rewatched it, gonna hve to remedy that soon.

I am a fan of 'American Gangster'. I noticed No one has mentioned it, but I've watched the extended cut of that film 5 times at least, and always enjoy it.
