One difference is that Machete also shows the all-white working-class militiamen are just as exploited by the rich white guys.

Give me Coffy or Sweet Sweetback over Machete anyday.

I didn't find Machete preachy in any sense of the word. In fact, I didn't think it was anything more than the B-movie offering it was meant to be.

I don't think Rodriguez knows how to make B movies, his movies just fail to be anything other than B grade cinema at best.

I tend to agree with this. It's like he can see where his pictures need to go, but he ends up being too self-aware to make a true B movie.

I didn't think Machete was necessarily "preachy", I just think RR didn't know how to make the film we all expected after seeing the trailer first appear.

I don't think he aspires to make anything else. Shit this dude ushered in the popularity of filmaking on a budget and filmed a whole movie on green screen. I can't understand why you would expect anything else and yes, this dude knows how to make an entertaining exploitation flick. So much better than many of these amatuers out there making "homage" flicks. Besides, I'll always be grateful for his Puerco Pibil.

 Fucking A, been making it semi-regularly ever since he put out the 10 minute cooking school on how to make it.

I find it funny people are debating whether or not his stuff is even B movie worthy, that's all I've seen his movies as. Fun B exploitation stuff, but there's nothing preachy about it, just fun silliness. Interesting that the only major Hollywood movie I've heard him attached to was the god awful Predators. I would have much preferred him making it, but the story was just dumb as shit.

I guess I imagined the Mexcian guy swinging through a window using some other guy's intestines as rope then. Yeah, not fun at all.

Yup, Sin City and all those shitty kids movies arent Hollywood at all.

Yep, I can make that Puerco Pibil dish like a mother. The Sin City tacos were great too. Since he's in Texas, and it's a texas thing, I kept getting confused as to what he was calling "Amigas." It just happened to be the potatoes. Once I figured out that little detail it was on. I've yet to make the cookies that he made on Shark Boy and Lava Girl and there was another item he made in a later vide. It may have been when they actually put special features on the first Spy Kids Blu-ray edition.

The Spy Kids movies are, Sin City not so much. Yeah, it's got Hollywood stars, but Hollywood is nowhere to be found in the film. He shoots it fast, cheap, and moves on to the next project.

Almost forgot - when they reissued the fully loaded version of Grindhouse he made real Texas BBQ. That one is a bit too advanced for me, but looks awesome:

I never saw Spy Kids as Hollywood really, especially since he kept harping on how - again - low budget, they were made for. Although if I remember, I think Spy Kids was the biggest budget up till then on his movies. But I don't know of too many Hollywood action movies made for around $30 mil.

Re: Machete Kills - Robert Rodriguez, Danny Trejo

He gets distribution and possible financing from Hollywood. But everything is made under Troublemaker Studios. It's his own facility and equipment. Lots of control. Little interference. The best part is that his favorite production ideas are small and cheap.

On a much larger scale, Ridley Scott and Peter Jackson get to work the same way.

Every director and/or producer has their own production company now. Are any directors still strictly employees of a big studio? But not many own the facilities and equipment, and require tons of money. So they are more directly controlled by lesser-known and unknown producers from the big studios.

...well...didn't expect Sofia Vergara to do that. I approve of this development.

Funny growing up seeing her do all that fun goofy stuff when she was young and now as an adult I see her do this. That's a good career there.

She don't give a fuck! She's cashing the Modern Family checks. Now she can focus on the "smaller" projects like Machete Kills.

Maybe they can fit a Sex Machine cameo in there now. He has the cock gun, she has the machine gun tits.

How good is that show btw? I saw an episode and some parts I enjoyed while others I didn't. I enjoyed Her and Al Bundy the most from what I saw.

I have to admit...I the she looks better now than when she was a young busting at the seams in her whatever the fuck she wore as the co-host of that travel show she did.

I've never watched a single episode. I've heard nothing but good things, though. Yeah, she looks way better now than she did when she was younger. She has more money to get better procedures than we she was younger. I wasn't always a fan of her fake tits early on - but love them now.

It's a fantastic show!

The thing that kills it for me is Manny (little mexican kid). I just cringe anytime he's given dialogue (and maybe that's the point).
