I think they're still watching Tree of Life, so they missed the deadline to vote for it.

Probably just due to the sheer number of producers the fucker had, over a dozen.

I didn't like it because it felt like Malick descending into self-parody.

add Von Trier to that list, the first part of Melancholia was ridiculous and mind numbing.

Edit: Giles, I haven't seen Melancholia yet. I actually still haven't seen Antichrist.

Has anyone found a printable nominee list that isn't 4 pages long like the one found on oscar.com?

You have to go across the pond:

Agreed. It was Malick's worst film and one of the worst movies I've ever seen in the theater. I admire the man a lot but nothing in TOL worked.

I generally like Malick's films but it was the ending that really did not work - the film had no where to go and how it was handled just fell on it's face.

Oh and even though We Need to Talk about Kevin wasn't nominated, and reviewers talk about the performance, it's weird that it isn't even in general release yet.

Also I don't know what kind of release technicality they're using, but Beginners was in a film festival in 2010, so that's something that stuck out.

I thought Beginners was shown at the 2011 Sundance festival.

it's the same case with We Need to Talk About Kevin and Albert Nobbs - they are technically film festival showings and the obligatory New York City/LA week runs to qualify for the Academy Awards - but to say it was the best of 2011 seems very elitist - I think the Academy needs to revisit this and have every film released within it's given year to more cities than the two aforementioned ones. This was very noticeable for the win of Madonna's song for her film for W.E - yes I know that the Globes have different rules, but best movie song of 2011 - please...

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

According to Wiki, Beginners was shown at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.

I agree Giles, some of the distribution stuff is pretty weak. And particularly for Documentaries, I read about an underhanded technique done by the guy who won for One Day in September, though didn't somebody say that system is changing, or will next year?

And yeah we should get more...especially since we live in D.C., that's not exactly a small town, but we still haven't gotten Rampart!

It had gorgeous cinematography and Brad Pitt gave an excellent performance. But if I had to hear one more person whisper in voice over while looking wistfully at another character I was going to slit my wrists.

And although I did like that movie, Sean Penn did absolutely nothing. He could have been played by any other person of a similar age.

I think the documentary rules start for this year's releases, in that all have to have theatrical distribution.

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations are Here!!!

Okay that's better. Here is the deal with One Day in September (from Ebert's review):

Footnote: When "One Day in September" won the Academy Award in 2000, its producer, Arthur Cohn, held up the Oscar and boasted, "and I won this without showing it in a single theater!" The documentary community is still angry about that remark. Cohn exhibits his Oscar entries at screenings peopled largely by those on his invitation list and to as few other people as possible. Under the academy bylaws, only those who have seen all five nominated docs can vote, and by limiting those who have seen his, Cohn shrinks the voting pool and improves his odds. Documentary groups and many individual filmmakers have protested this Oscar to the academy.

We're talking The Tree of Life here, not Benjamin Button.

This is what killed it for me. I am a fan of Malick's but the voiceover was overdone.
There are times that call for silence and the visuals should speak ala Tarkovsky or Antonioni.
