As much as I didn't like Tree of Life, overall, I might actually pay to see it on IMAX.
I loved how when the blu ray began it said something like - "The producers of this film recommend you play it loud."

the academy sees whats on the ballet, if its a movie they love, they'll vote it for everything its eligible (see the Artist with 10 noms and most of the tech noms, see Kings Speech last year and it getting 11 nods, and several tech nods that were questionable

the mere fact that Fox actually released 'The Tree of Life' with a 7.1 soundmix on the bluray edition is remarkable since Fox hasn't been that attune in releasing movie as such theatrically (and when they have they have downmixed them to conventional 5.1 on blu-ray: i.e, 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' and 'Gulliver's Travels')

It's not so much the film choices that aggravates me about Meryl Streep, it's that the Academy is up her ass every year. She could very well have gone the De Niro route and picked movies simply for the paycheck. The only difference between her and De Niro is that Meryl Streep would have been nominated for Best Actress in Rocky and Bullwinkle had she been in it.
Not Streep's fault at all. The blame goes to the Academy for nominating her sight unseen every year.

That's not how the nominations work, although you're right when it comes to the final voting for the winner.

I hope Malick wins Best Director and doesn't show, but has Banksy accept the award on his behalf.

It's hilarious that they called out EL&IC last, btw. The Oscar producers and such knew that it would shock and get people talking. And we are! They do not care about quality as they did only just a decade ago - they want ratings. Sad.
And best picture is The Artist's to lose. It just has all the right things going for it. A 'silent' film that calls back to old Hollywood but is refreshingly up to date for the younger generation, great performances, a

According to The New York Times, the only Best Picture nominee to make more than $100 million at the boxoffice so far is THE HELP.

I have seen all of his films and for some reason this one annoyed the hell out of me. My wife walked away from it after half an hour and this is a woman who has seen films by Bresson & Tarkovsky with me and enjoyed them.

The Nominations Process
Nomination ballots are mailed to the Academy’s active members in late December and are due back to PricewaterhouseCoopers, an international accounting firm, in January.
Regular awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective film achievements in up to 25 categories. Members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominated film editors, etc. However within the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees.
All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.
The results of nomination balloting are announced at a 5:30 a.m. (PT) press conference the third week of January at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Really getting into it and then walking away disgusted is also possible.

Somehow, I'm thinking there weren't more whispered voiceovers in ToL than Thin Red Line or The New World. I think there was WAY less dialogue between characters so it made the narration more evident. Those other two films I mentioned relied heavily on narration too and without it, they wouldn't be Malick films.

Kyle Smith in the New York Post offers his amusing assessment of the looming ratings disaster awaiting the Oscar telecast:

Yeah I think this is gonna be a very weak Oscars rating s wise at least. I would complain about stale-ole Billy Crystal hosting (cause goodness knows he's not gonna be bringing in the young folks) but anything is better than the disastrous hosts last year. I wonder if The Artist will end up being the Least-grossing (at least since like the 70's) film ever to win the Oscars (assuming that crap wins)
