I'd agree w/ that. Huge ass different level of pacing w/ that cast.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

I never got on the REC bandwagon, mostly out of laziness. Seeing this one was out made me get up and watch all three.

LOVE the first one. One of the best found footage films I've ever seen. Tense all the way through, and with a brilliant climax.

I know there's a lot of love for REC 2 but I thought it was a big disappointment. I just didn't care for the characters and I saw the twist coming a mile away.

But that's nothing compared to REC 3. Moving away from the found footage conceit does the series a huge disservice. The humorous elements made the serious stuff feel out of place. At no point was I scared or even interested, really. Again, the characters were so utterly uninteresting. I honestly can't believe this is by the same creative team as the second, let alone the first.

I was starting to think I'd be forevr alone in my opinion of the sequel.

I was afraid of that. So not even worth a rental?

It's worth a rental, but lower your expectations.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

I probably will be holding off on this one because I don't think it's being released On Demand or In Theaters in the original language. I'm not one to watch movies on my computer through Amazon, so I'll wait to buy it on disc when the price drops. I wonder if the US will even get the Blu-ray since Sony dumped the first [REC] straight to DVD and [REC] 2 never got a DVD or Blu-ray release in the US. So, I wonder how the third one will be treated. I'm going to guess just a DVD release, but I hope I'm wrong.

If we don't get a release, then I'll probably just pull the trigger on the UK import, especially since it isn't priced badly at all. I'll wait to read technical reviews.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

Honestly, I don't even think Genesis is worth a rental. It's got as much to do with the first two movies as Halloween III: Season of the Witch has to do with the rest of the Halloween films.

I rented via VUDU and it was in SPanish with English subtitles. I watched it on my plasma through the PS3.

REC is the reason I went region free. I have the Spanish import on Blu of the first one and the Japanese import of the second. I'll probably get 3 via the UK just to complete the set.

One of the reasons I bought a region free Blu-ray player was for the first [REC] too. I also have the Spanish import on Blu. I have both [REC] 1 and [REC] 2 from Canada, as well. I'm a bit of a completist, so despite how I might feel about the third film, I'll still end up adding it to my collection at the right price.

You're right, it has slightly more to do with the first two films than Halloween III does to the rest of that series, but only slightly.

Isn't there only one nod to the first two films in the newest installment?

Spoiler:
Koldo's Uncle saying he was bitten by a dog on the hand?

I can't remember anything else that was tied in from the previous films.

I don't think that is even a nod to the first film. If we were talking Quarantine, then it would have been because in the (American) world of Quarantine
Spoiler:
it was a rabies-like infection
. However in the (Spanish) world of [Rec] it was
Spoiler:
demonic possession
.

I thought I did see a nod though ... in one scene you see a TV monitor over Koldo's shoulder and I think it is showing a scene from the first [Rec]. I could be wrong though.

This is worth watching if you are into zombies or splatter-fests. If you go into it as a standalone movie it is a pretty good flick ... if you are clamoring for a [Rec] sequel then it is a major letdown.

Some fresh and creative stuff
Spoiler:
such as the suits of armor -- at first I thought that was just comically dumb, but then I thought about it. It makes perfect sense!
. The story could have been fleshed out (pun intended) better, but I enjoyed it.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

If I'm not mistaken wasn't:

Spoiler:
Jennifer's (the young girl) dog said to be infected with an 'illness' in the first Spanish film? I remember the 'Health Inspector' once inside, saying that the particular dog was traced back to the apartment building, after it had gotten extremely aggressive and attacked other dogs at the Vet

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

Yeah. It was traced back to Medieros, her having that specific condition. It had mutated by the time the film takes place.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

also a tie to the first two :

Spoiler:
there was a moment when the heroes saw some infected in the mirror and their reflection was the skinny attic demon thing.

Spoiler:
Yep, which basically tells you that they're all one in the same as opposed to separate demons. I hated the fact that these demons acted like zombies, too. Such an inconsistent movie.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

Yes, some moved fast and others moved slow depending on what the scene called for. That was kinda annoying. But overall I enjoyed it.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

Sorry -- my mistake; been a while since I watched them. How does that make sense? It
Spoiler:
(the dog)
works in Quarantine because of the cause -- that doesn't make sense in [Rec] though.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

I lowered my expectations on this one after seeing so many negative opinions on it.
I didn't hate it. In fact, I thought it was quite fun.
My biggest disappointment on the tech-side is:
Spoiler:
how they handled the change in aspect ratio. I'd have preferred if the found-footage portion at the beginning was 16:9 window-boxed instead of 16:9 full-frame, if only because it felt less "cinematic" to switch to a smaller 2.35:1 image once they break the camera. In contrast, Oliver Stone's JFK starts at 4:3 window-boxed, so the switch to 2.35:1 does make the rest of the movie "bigger" than the intro. That's how this movie should have done it.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

I'm with the people that felt Genesis should not have been part of the REC franchise. The first two movies are brilliant for their genre and then you get Genesis, which feels like a cheap direct-to-video prequel/sequel. Genesis feels like a cheap imitation that someone wrote trying to cash in on REC's popularity. I would have less problems with it if they had put it out as a standalone film.

Re: [REC] 3: Genesis

i really only liked the last 15 minutes or so when it became a pure splatterfest. Making it "a movie" was just dumb but once the blood started splattering (the chainsaw), i enjoyed it
