I quit during the Morrison (so I hated the inclusion of Angel) and the horrible Austen run so Azezal and Darwin were lost on me but it had enough recognizable characters that I still had an X-Men vibe to me. Sure I would have liked to have seen Jean since I felt they made her far too old in the original trilogy but at least we got Beast and a Summers.

I'm glad that most of the films "continuity errors" were made in order to invalidate Last Stand and Wolverine.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) The Reviews Thread
It was entertaining enough, I just wasn't blown away by it. The big problem I had was that it was a half hour too long. This could have been a great, tight 90 minute movie, but I feel that the run time was due to trying to cram as many mutants in it as possible at the expense of the pacing. Every time Magneto was on the screen was intersting, but the X-Men themselves were so dull and 1 note that I wanted more Magneto/Charles and less "the team hanging out scenes." Havok, Darwin, etc were so one note and undeveloped that I could care less about them. This is a trend that I think started in X3, where instead of giving a character any personality or backstory, they become "The one who shoots lasers from their chest" and that's it.
This lead, I feel, to a lack of suspense throughout. There wasn't much at stake. Another problem I had was that the Hellfire Club was routed, out numbered and outmaneuvered at every turn, they never were much of a threat.

I don't think this is a better film than X2, but it's still damned entertaining. I secretly hoped the entire movie was just Magneto chasing Nazis.
I'll say this: in my mind, this is the true third X-Men film, and this did a lot to erase the awfulness of United and Origins.

Saw it today, and enjoyed it. Not quite as good as X-Men or X2, better than Wolverine (which had its moments) and leaps and bounds better than the Last Stand.
Hopefully the franchise is back on track, and I'd love to see a continuation from here with Fassbender and McAvoy.

Re-watched X-Men before catching this on Friday, and this new one blows-it away. I'm not sure when comparing it to X2 yet though, need to re-watch that one again.

I really enjoyed this one, haven't seen Wolverine yet. But looking back, I really think X-Men 1 wasn't that great. Not as bad as 3, but still not that great. 2 was the best...not sure if people will agree with that, but I dunno. I felt that this was as good as, if not better than 2, however I only saw 2 & 3 one time each in theaters.
And another thing about part 3...really it had no excuses for excluding Nightcrawler.

That's why he was awkwardly written out in the tie-in game.

I really liked Fassbender and McAvoy and I would love for this to get a sequel. It had some flaws, but I was able to get past most of them without too much of a gripe. Also, other than a line or two, I didn't think January Jones was too bad. Sure, as an actress she doesn't seem to have a great range, but I feel like her limited ability mostly worked with her role.
I also had the cameos spoiled for me beforehand, but really forgot about them while watching the movie. The

I'm amazed I managed to avoid finding out about either cameo, given that I didn't see the movie until Sunday.

Seeing how I'd completely forgotten that scene in the first place tells you something about how much I cared to remember the movie, but it made me pause and try to figure out what gives.

Let's face it. X-Men has not had the greatest of theatrical efforts, because Fox Tom Rothman has no idea how to run a studio.
Fox rushed Singer and company through the production of the first film. What could've been a great film turned out to be an okay film. Whatever. There's always the sequels, right?
Fox learned from their mistakes and allowed Singer and company to take their time with X2. What happens? X2 makes more money and goes down in history as one of those rare, great comic book films.
I like to believe that X3 never happened. Instead of allowing Singer to pass the torch to Vaughn, what happens? To make release date, Fox tells Singer and company to go fuck themselves for jumping ship to Warner for Superman Returns and hires Ratner. Yes, they hired Ratner to complete a summer tentpole picture in less than a nine-month window. What happens? We get an absolute piece of shit that becomes the highest grossing entry in the franchise.
I don't even want to comment on Wolverine because that was a trainwreck the moment the film went into pre-production due to a director that wasn't comfortable directing a big-budget studio picture.
After the last two entries, Vaughn and company had nowhere to go but up. Thankfully they did.
Now since I like to have sex with women, I don't have an idea how this comic book continuity or retconning works. What I do have an idea on is that Vaughn and company have made the best X-Men film to date. If it invalidates the past films, so be it. Outside of the first two X-Men films, the other two are garbage; so who cares? To quote my wife, "That film was too 'serious business.'" [That's woman talk for she didn't like it, she preferred the fluffier-lighter Thor from last month.]
While I would prefer Vaughn to do other films, especially since the man is now 4 for 4, I'd wait for a sequel to First Class with open arms. Hell, I'd even take Vaughn directing a sex-comedy set in the groovy sixties where McAvoy and Fassbender just go around chasing women and nazis.
And for one thing, I'm glad that Vaughn has trashed Ratner, Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (the "credited" screenwriters of First Class) in interviews. Not only can he make good films, but he can also tear other filmmakers a new asshole.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Vaughn, 2011) The Reviews Thread
Nikki Finke ripped Vaughn a new one about trashing Ratner during this past weekend's box office article on Deadline.
The comments about the writers were done when the WGA made their decision on who actually got credit for the screenplay. The WGA gave it to the two plus Goldman and Vaughn. I forget where I read that, but Vaughn was upset as Goldman and him did an entire re-write based upon Singer's idea for the story and nothing from past iterations of the screenplay were present. God bless the WGA for continuing brain dead decisions on who gets credit and who doesn't.

Who was it that once said that you can completely change every line of dialogue in a script and the WGA still wont credit you for it?
