I love U-Turn. It's got an amazing cast and the film they shot in on really gives it a unique look. In my top 3 Stone movies

The name rings a bell but I am certain that I have never seen Empire of the Sun... thanks for mentioning it! I gotta see it after reading this editorial review from Amazon.com .....>>
Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music (the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G. Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's depiction of another, less familiar casualty of war.
In a time when competitors were releasing "comedic," derivative coming-of-age films, Empire of the Sun stands out as an epic in the classic David Lean sense--despite confusion or perceived competition with the equally excellent The Last Emperor (also released in 1987, and also a coming-of-age in a similar setting). It is also a remarkable testament to, yes, the human spirit. And despite its disappointing box-office returns, Empire of the Sun helped to further establish Spielberg as more than a commercial director and set the standard, tone, and look for future efforts Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. --N.F. Albert Brooks' two "life" movies-- "Real Life" (1979) and "Defending Your Life" (1991). Actually all of Albert Brook's directorial efforts are off the mainstream radar.
Oliver Stone's "Heaven and Earth" (1993).

Even though he only made around 7 movies, and I've only seen 4 of them (yet own 6...damn), Sergio Leone's first feature, Colossus of Rhodes is excellent.

Heaven and Earth would definitely be my Stone pick, a very good film with a great score.

Maybe not too big of a director to the average person but Wim Wender's Until the End of the World. One of my top 5 favorites and would love in high-def!

No disrespect to Wim Wenders, but there's no way he's a "big name director." All of his films are "lesser known."
I was going to name a Jim Jarmusch movie, but that's not the point of this thread.

He's not. Sorry, that's the truth.
I don't think any of his films have ever grossed more than $10 million.
You could ask 300 random people on the street if they know who he is and not get a single yes.
If Wim Wenders is a big enough name for this thread, then why aren't we talking about the "lesser known" films of such household names as Jarmusch, Hal Hartley, Alex Cox, Abel Ferrara, James Gray, Bruce McDonald

yeah, Wenders isn't a big name. He's a fine director, sure. He's not Coppola, Spielberg, Scorsese, Nolan, Coen Bros, Hitchcock, Burton, Bay, Ford, Kurosawa, etc etc etc big. Hell more people know about Michael Bay than Wenders. The Recognizable level doesn't equal to quality all the time.
