Name a few lesser known movies that you love that are from a big name director.

#1 I know there are a few threads that are along these lines, but not exactly. The movie that made me think of this thread title is one of my favorites from Martin Scorsese, After Hours. It may not be all that lesser known but you don't hear its name very often. Name some of your favorite lesser known movies from a big name director. thanks

Red Beard (Kurosawa) -- When everyone thinks of Kurosawa they think of the samurai flicks, and rightfully so in most cases. However, I love his dramatic pieces; High & Low, The Lower Depths and especially Red Beard are my favorites.

That needs to be released somewhere so I can see it, the poster alone is badass.

One From the Heart - Francis Ford Coppola
Body Double - Brian DePalma

Last ones might be cheats but Stick by Burt Reynolds and Looker from Michael Crichton.

IMO after the big 4 (GF I&II/Apocalypse Now/The Conversation) this is Coppola's fifth best film.

I guess it is tough to consider any movie from directors like Martin Scorsese and Elia Kazan "lesser known," but when I read this thread title my mind automatically went to two films:

New York, New York by Scorsese. A film that was unfairly and unfortunately savaged by critics upon its debut and almost ended Scorsese's film career is actually an amazingly ambitious film that attempts to merge two aesthetics from two different periods of cinema history (70s grit and big musical spectacles from the 30s and 40s). It is a big swing that has been treated as a miss. It wasn't knocked out of the park, but it is definitely a ground rule double. A film I really enjoy and cannot wait to pick up again soon on Blu-ray.

The Last Tycoon by Elia Kazan featuring excellent, but restrained performances by Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro. Kazan's last film and viewed by many as his weakest, but I once wrote a paper about Kazan that led me to experiencing it for the first time and I found myself enjoying more than what I had read about it made me think I would. Kazan was known for getting the best out of his actors and while, this is not the best from De Niro, it is still a damn good performance from the most fertile period in his career.

I've always loved Oliver Stone's U Turn, but don't know anyone else who likes it.
I think Brian De Palma's Femme Fatale is a masterpiece and his last great film (so far, I hope).

It's got quite a cult following. An amazing work with an equally compelling production history.

I'll add to that Friedkin's Rampage, The Brink's Job, The Boys in the Band and of course...Cruising.
