Darren Aronofsky

With Black Swan getting a wide release in the next couple of weeks, I thought however brief (but potent) a filmography, I would broach the subject...

What is your favorite Aronofsky film?

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I like all of his films for various reasons (still haven't seen Black Swan) but The Fountain had the most profound effect on me, so I have to give that my vote.

Haven't seen Black Swan yet, but it's gonna take a lot to rank it above The Wrestler for me.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

The Fountain is probably my favorite, though I still consider Requiem a masterpiece (and probably his best work). It'd be interesting to see the supposed "director's cut" of The Fountain.

Still haven't seen Black Swan.

I loved every single one of his movies but The Fountain is a masterpiece that will one day the respect it deserves.

I was under the assumption that it was the DC? What's the story about that?

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I've yet to see Black Swan, but I can't imagine it will surpass the perfection that is Requiem for a Dream. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

So tough to choose, as Aronofsky is truly an amazing filmmaker, and I just saw "Black SwanL and found it just as strong a film as his other films, and he's getting better, too. But the one that hit me the hardest was "The Fountain"m

Exact same here. I think Requiem is a fantastic but even The Fountain succeeds it. For some reason it just speaks to me. And I listen to the soundtrack probably once a week. The soundtrack ranks 2nd only to Somewhere In Time for me.

The Wrestler was just okay to me. I love Darren's stuff but it just seemed like weak sauce compared to the rest of his stuff. I still don't really understand all the love it gets while The Fountain languishes basically unheard of.

Pick this up if you want the director's cut. http://www.amazon.com/Fountain-Darre...2007479&sr=1-1

I'm not a fan of the artwork but it is interesting if you love the movie. It's been awhile since I read it so I don't remember a lot of the specific differences besides it being broader in scope and having several more scenes, deleted and extended.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I voted for The Wrestler since I absolutely adore it, but The Fountain would be a close second... I was blown away by that movie and still watch it on a regular basis. The only one I don't care for is Requiem For a Dream. It is extremely well made and I respect the craft that went into it, but seeing it once was enough. Excruciating and irritating to watch are the best ways to describe it. Never again. Everything else though, very good. Can't wait to see his spin on Wolverine.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

Requiem for a Dream, which also doubles as my favorite film, period.

Here's my ranking:

RfaD
The Fountain
Pi
The Wrestler

Can't wait to see Black Swan, but it opens near me on the 17th, so I have to.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I haven't seen The Fountain. My wife loves Aronofsky films and has them on DVD, except this one. We're getting a blu-ray player but the blu-ray is $10 and the DVD is $6. Is there much difference between the two in terms of print/transfer quality?

is there enough difference to justify spending the extra $4? .... yes

Compared to the standard DVD edition of 'The Fountain,' both high-def editions are visual godsends.

On the digital side things look very good. There was a touch of mosquito noise in a very few scenes, and one or two instances of light posterization, but these defects were rare. Overall this was a very nice looking disc. Since this is such a visually dynamic film, I'd strongly recommend that anyone thinking about a purchase spring for the BD copy. I'm sure the added detail makes the movie much more enjoyable.
