I have yet to see Black Swan but I voted for The Wrestler. I love that movie.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I voted for Requiem for a Dream because I still think it's one of the best flicks I've ever seen...also because it's so easy to ruin a drug movie that starts of so strong...Requiem just keeps getting tougher to watch as you sit through it (in a good way)

Aronofsky may just be my new favorite director as well...I still haven't seen the fountain (and thanks to this thread...I will prob be renting it tonight) and The Wrestler was excellent as well but I have to give the nod to Requiem.

I agree with all of this. This is how I'd rank his movies:

1. Requiem
2. The Wrestler
3. The Fountain
4. Pi

I have yet to see Black Swan.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

Haven't seen the ranking yet but I would rank his others:

1. The Fountain
1 1/2. Requiem For a Dream (it is really tough to rank it #2. One and a half seems fair. )
2. Pi
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
4. The Wrestler

I am crossing my fingers that Black Swan is much improved over The Wrestler. Not that it was a bad movie but just wasn't up to par with his other three. And yes, I think Pi is better than The Wrestler.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

Need to watch The Fountain again before contemplating whether I'll even be able to choose between it and Black Swan, two very different beasts that both struck a personal chord. Plus, I'm still in the "honeymoon phase" from his latest. It's a shame to read some of the negative impressions for The Wrestler, though, a terrific character piece that's simply different from Aronofsky's norm.

The Wrestler is winning the poll. I can't wait to see Black Swan, but living in middle America it probably won't get here until early next year.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

Black Swan is Aronofsky's There Will Be Blood; after several near masterpieces, he hits the sweet spot. Black Swan will also probably get the second most best picture votes. It's his most streamlined and unpretentious film though still maintaining ambiguity and artistic ambition.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I'm not voting since I have yet to see Black Swan and it would be tough to vote The Fountain ahead of RFAD. I abstain.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I'll wait until I see Black Swan to vote, but right now it would be The Wrestler and The Fountain at either 1 or 2 (not sure), Requiem For A Dream at 3 and Pi at 4.

Well, if you live in St. Louis, it started at Plaza Frontenac on Friday (Dec. 10). It's on 3 screens there.

Nice. I just looked at Wehrenberg's site and they're getting it next Friday. I think I'll wait until next weekend and catch an early show for $4. I've seen a lot of movies since they started that deal. Thanks

Re: Darren Aronofsky

Watched the Fountain last night...a little too out there for me. It wasn't bad but it's definitely the weakest of all his films for me.

That is really great praise to read. I can't wait to see it.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

It's entirely possible that Black Swan is his greatest achievement yet. I like it more every day since saw I it a month and a half ago. The Fountain has a more profound effect on me, so I had to go with that one.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

Tough to rank them, but...

1A) RFAD
1B) Black Swan
1C) The Wrestler
1D) The Fountain
1E) Pi

IMHO he has yet to make a film that is anything less than excellent.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

though it's the opposite of subtlety, i found Requiem For A Dream to be one of the most effective films i've ever seen. i remember my first viewing and my reaction to it like it was yesterday. if there's one story that can change lives, Requiem is most definitely one of them.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

The Fountain is a giant of a film - i think it could've surpassed Requiem For A Dream potentially, if not for Warner Bros going cut-happy on its budget, content, and duration. it's the one film every cinephile wishes they would've one day made.

I'm glad that there is some love here for The Fountain. It's a beautiful story and the score makes me cry every time.

Now that I've seen Black Swan (and, thusly, all of his films), I'm going with The Wrestler, though Black Swan would be a close second.

Re: Darren Aronofsky

I said Black Swan, however it is a close one with Requiem. That said Aronofsky is 5/5 with me. One of my favorite directors.
