There was a piece on ELYSIUM in The New York Times today. Here's the link:

There's an interesting quote in it and perhaps an ominous harbinger of the film's boxoffice fate:
Just the thing to draw in the August crowds, right fellas?

“Our movie is a political statement,” Mr. Copley added. “It doesn’t shy away from controversial ideas."

Aw yeah. I made a mistake and passed on District 9 in the theaters, I don't think I'll miss this one. IMAX for me if this gets good reviews.

I thought the big-budget rated R sci-fi would die with Prometheus, but I guess not. This must be pretty good if they have the confidence to release it with that rating. One possibility that I think the studio is betting on is the fact that most blockbusters have come and gone by August and the kids are back in school . Elysium is technically the last big budget flick of the summer and has the potential to hang around via word of mouth and possibly stay in the top five until Labor Day weekend as adults become the predominant audience again.

Eh, $90m budgets are a dime a dozen these days. Plus Prometheus made $406m worldwide.

Not to mention that Neill works on his own terms now. District 9 was R.

Yeah, this is one of the safer bets of the summer. D9 made 210 worldwide.... this is the same type of film but with high profile stars. Should do 250 easy...more if it's as great as D9 was.

Filming in Canada and Mexico and having hook-ups with WETA probably paid off.
Imagine what could have been if Blomkamp got his first choice of lead actor (Eminem, if they could film in Detroit).

A friend of mine saw it last night and said it was good but not District 9 good.

I wonder where that puts it for those of us that didn't like D9 (which started off dull then turned into a goofy videogame, imo of course)
