The "general opinion", as you put it, is decidedly not the informed opinion. Your "most projectionists" are a bunch of wrong people, if they exist.

Will a Blu look as nice as a clean 35mm print? Of course not.

Will it look as nice as a proper digital print? No, although the resolution isn't far off. Digital prints run in theatres are typically 2048x1080. Blu-rays are 1920x1080, but that's still a fair difference, and with Blus you have compression to deal with. A 35gb Blu-ray movie file won't look as good as a 110gb digital print.

Will it look very nice? Yes it will. And it did last night when I ran blu-rays of The Descent and Shaun of the Dead for our Halloween party, using a Panasonic Blu-ray hooked up to a 6000 lumen projector on a 50-foot screen.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

Just learned that a drive-in theater near me will have BTTF next weekend. May have to check this out as long as the weather cooperates.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

We went to see it at the Highlands Ranch theater in Denver and they could never get it to play. After about 15 minutes of tring to get it to work they told us the "file was corrupted", gave us refunds and free passes.

It sucked that we didn't get to see it on the big screen but we got to see The Town for free, I guess that's something.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

Really old thread, but it's the most topical for this post.

This is coming back to theaters for 1 night only on October 21st

Even though I own the 4K disc box set, I might do this if I'm not busy. I was 12 when it came out in 1985 and didn't see it in the theater. I saw it for the first time on VHS 6 months later.

I've seen a few of these theatrical re-releases. Most recently I saw the 50th anniversary re-release of Enter the Dragon several weeks ago.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

I’d go but my theater doesn’t do Fathom Events screenings. Saw a screening at a different local theater years back.

My town has a car show downtown in August and one year to tie-in with the theme they showed Back to the Future and American Graffiti for free.

Saw Back to the Future with my dad and my grandpa and later that night went to American Graffiti.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

I'd go if it wasn't a Fathom event but just a regular "back in theaters" engagement. There are enough revivals out there already that qualify for A-List, like Jaws or E.T. last year. I just can't justify taking the family out for $60 for a movie we have at home.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

The last time Fathom Events held a Back to the Future screening, they couldn’t get the file to play and we ended up getting free tickets for another movie. I still haven’t seen this in theaters.

I’m not sure I trust anything from Fathom Events. My limited experience has left a pretty bad taste in my mouth for the quality of the overall experience.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

My teenaged self saw this in the theatres when it first came out. I remember when the camera panned over all the clocks at Doc Brown's place at the beginning, some dude yelled out "What time is it...?!?" and got about a dozen different responses back, giving everyone a good laugh ...

Back when being at the movies with other people was a great experience ...

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

A-List and Regal Unlimited don't cover this showing.

It would be $14 out of pocket.

Funny thing, if I just drop in my 4K disc for BTTF, it will probably look better than the picture of this showing. But, I did see the Fathom Events Enter the Dragon showing a few weeks ago and it did look good.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

40th anniversary IMAX re-release starting on October 30th

AMC is showing it in the afternoon at 3pm (some of you might be still at work) and it's A-List eligible.

Of course, this will vary by region for availability.

Easy sale for me. I never saw this in the theater 40 years ago.

I remember seeing this multiple times at the $1 (or whatever the cheap rate was at the time) theater.

With The Muppet Movie off my list this (or Network) is probably my favorite film I’ve never seen in the theater. Hope this is playing for more than just Halloween because i would make the 2 hour drive to Imax for it but can’t on that day.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

Nice!! There's also new 4K releases coming as well.

Edit: Also if this, Jaws and the Batman films can secure premium screens, why in the world can't Lucasfilm do the same for it's SW anniversary releases? I swear if they can't even do that for the 50th Anniversary...

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

Reminder. The IMAX re-release starts tomorrow. Looks like in my area, tomorrow is 1 IMAX screening per day. Friday it varies from 1-3. I plan to see it Friday.

Woo-hoo! This 40th anniversary screening at AMC IMAX qualifies for A-List! We are IN for a Saturday IMAX matinee!

The kids have only seen this once and it's been at least four years. They were so excited, bounding off the couch cushions during the finale. I think it will captivate them once again!

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

We're going to see it at the Alamo on Friday afternoon.

Best part about being empty nesters is shutting the lights off and going to the movies for Halloween. Last year we went and saw the original Halloween at the Alamo. Keeping this tradition alive with one of my favorites.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

I was at AMC last night to see Anniversary and saw they still have the DeLorean car/bucket in stock. It is quite expensive at $50. While it's cool, I just can't justify that expense for something just to look at. I'd rather buy a few new 4Ks for that money.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

I just got back from seeing it. Looked great in IMAX.

Surprisingly they gave out a free mini poster. But the artwork kind of sucks. There is a 40th anniversary poster that showed the cast that I would have preferred. But free is free.

Anyway, it was really fun re-visiting this again. And I noticed they actually took out the To be continued at the end.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

The “To Be Continued” was added for the video release. Purists succeeded in having it removed later. (This was the very last Univeral movie issued on CED videodisc incidentally.)

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

Took my folks to see this Friday afternoon in IMAX - as expected it looked and sounded fantastic, older films continue to exceed my expectations with their audio mix in theaters.(esp in Dolby and Imax) Universal has been excellent at preserving their classic films. Passed on the mini print, too bad they didn't go with one of the other 40th anniversary posters. It's been awhile since I've revisited BTTF - pretty much perfect pacing and editing throughout, you get just enough time with characters and not a second more than needed. (and actually leaves you wanting more)

Here is the free mini poster they gave out yesterday. Not really a fan of the design, but I took it.

Re: Back To The Future - Back on the Big Screen

So fun seeing this on the big screen for the first time since 1985. I caught a few things I've never noticed before, specifically the newspaper article about Doc's family losing their fortune at the beginning, which caused me to clock the big house he lives in in 1955 next to the garage. I just never put two and two together on him being in the big house in 1955 but only in the rundown garage in 1985 (mostly because that's only shown in the opening scene).

Anyway, it remains one of my favorite movies of all time. It's pretty much perfect from start to finish.
