Agreed. It was a solid performance. I hope the movie gets some other nominations as well.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I will also take the bet that Secretariat will not get a Best Picture nomination. I'm in for $50.

It's not this year's The Blind Side. It's this year's Amelia.

I see Black Swan getting nominations for Picture, Art Direction, Costuming, Director, Actress (Natalie Portman) and Supporting Actress (Barbara Hershey). I'm unsure about the screenplay, and while I think the cinematography is beautiful and appropriate, voters may not like the grainy Aronofsky style and zillions of close-ups. The constant influence of "Swan Lake" will stop Clint Mansell from getting a music nod. Nevertheless, I'll be happy with whatever it gets; I saw the film a couple of days ago and thought it was marvelous.

127 Hours is a good movie but I'm not sure how many nominations it might get, if any. I saw it yesterday, but it hasn't made much of an impression on me. I appreciate that James Franco carries the film almost single-handedly (no pun intended), but honestly he just looks like he's stoned all the time. In contrast, Slumdog Millionaire floored me. Such a good film.

/\ I'd add to that that a great portion of the populace connected with The Blind Side. It became water-cooler conversation at my work, adn I suspect other's as well.

Secretariat simply does not have the same support.

Secretariat didn't have self-important white people rescuing a magical mystical negro. No nomination!

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Movieline's Stu Van Airsdale has posted some Oscar Index charts which, I'm assuming, will be periodically updated from now until the awards are handed out. Sample:

In case you can't tell from the images, that's (from top to bottom):
1. The Social Network
2. The King’s Speech
3. Black Swan
4. 127 Hours
5. True Grit
6. The Kids Are All Right
7. Inception
8. Toy Story 3
9. The Fighter
10. For Colored Girls

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

One of these days I'll understand the love for Toy Story 3... or maybe not.

But For Colored Girls? Really? There's oscar hype for a Tyler Perry flick?

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

If they give that bastard, Tyler Perry, a nomination for Best Picture, I'm gonna puke.

If they throw it in there simply to have a 'Black Film', it would be a great dis-service to black people.

Black people CAN make actual GOOD films, but this guy is NOT one of them! White people want to appear like they are not racist so they will sometimes OK stuff and act like it's good, even though it's crap, just so they don't look bad.
It's not racist to think a director/producer is terrible. Black, White, Red, Green--if you suck you suck.
Hopefully they don't throw his tripe into the 10 but I wouldn't put it past them.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

For Colored Girls has some preliminary buzz due to pedigree (it's based on a well-known, award-winning stage play and showcases a good cast) and having Serious Business as its subject matter. I expect that it will fade away after the movie is actually released, just like the buzz for Secretariat has done.

He dares to make movies for somebody other than 18-35 white males who like comic books and video games. That fucking dick.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

Hey, Don't put me into the 18-35 WM category, although I am 29. I don't play video games, and I don't read comic books. My favorite film this year, so far, is 'Winters Bone' not Iron Man 2.

My anger with him is this- He makes terrible movies. He is SO VERY SADLY the top Black Director/Producer in Hollywood and that is a shame. I KNOW for a fact some great stuff could come from a black director but THIS is whats being pushed out there. For a black kid that would be into film, who can he look up to? This guy?

Sure Spike Lee is still there, but he is almost like the Token Black Director that Hollywood trust with SOME projects. Steve McQueen is up and coming as a feature film director with a solid film under his belt, but the names are few.

It would be nice to throw a few Black Director's names out there regularly as one of the best, but we shouldn't do it just to appear racially diverse.

It should be based on what is produced, and that is where Perry falls remarkably short.

Oh, and I hate his freakin' trailers to his movies.

Anyway...so..10 movies in there ey?

I really hope there's more movies coming along... because while I enjoyed The Social Network, it was hardly Best Picture material.

I just got through watching this and, yes, this is a must! The Academy would be crazy to bypass him. Although, they have overlooked some of my favorite "indie" performances in the past - most recently Brian Cox in L.I.E. and Frank Langella in Starting Out in the Evening - so I wouldn't be shocked if he misses the cut. However, he is helped in that the film is getting buzzed in other categories such as Lead Actress and Adapted Screenplay.

And I really cannot wait to see The King's Speech.

Toy Story 3 is obvious.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

I've been hearing mixed buzz about For Colored Girls. Some say that it's good and the best thing that Perry has done, and that the acting in it is top notch from Thandie Newton and Macy Gray of all people, and that alone will set it up for a nom for best picture. Others are saying that it's just a typical Perry, but that they will push that he's this major black director who's time has come now with this film.

No buzz for Hereafter? That's good to learn because Eastwood has overtaken Ron Howard as Hollywood's biggest overly sentimental Oscar-baiter.

No. I'll expect WB will throw its weight behind The Town - Hereafter was its probable prestige pic this year (Damon! Eastwood! ... Peter Morgan!), and mixed reviews will work against it.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

From what I've read, the possible top 5 for Director are:

Hooper (King's Speech), Fincher (Social Network), Aronofsky (Black Swan), Boyle (127 Hours), Nolan (Inception).

And apparently the buzz is high on The Fighter. If Russell comes on strong, I'm wondering who he might replace, assuming the above is how things shape up.

Hooper and Fincher are locks. I don't see them snubbing Nolan again. That would leave Aronofsky and Boyle. I think Aronofsky is a near lock given the buzz on Black Swan. Might be a battle for 5th between Boyle and Russell.

Either way, this would be a solid group of directors this year.

I have to say that after just seeing "Mother and Child", Bening is 100,000 times better in that than she was in "The Kids Are All Right". Which I think is way overrated. Her performance that is.

As for The Kids Are All Right, it doesn't have a chance in hell after Brokeback Mountain didn't take the Best Picture Oscar.

Anyone who thinks For Colored Girls will actually be nominated needs to lay off the crackpipe. Seriously. It's a horribly ghoulish adaptation of the source material. Did anyone actually see that movie in theaters???

Social Network will take the Oscars for Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Director, Editing, and most likely Actor.

Colin Firth is going to win for Best Actor.

A lot of the older Academy voters think Jesse Eisenberg and Michael Cera are the same person.
Firth was nominated last year and has a long resume of popular and prestigious films.

Re: 2010 Oscar buzz/predictions

This was the best male performance of the year.

Sadly, a less than stellar performance from Jessica Alba in an extremely cruel, warped movie has ensured he won't get the award, let alone the nomination he deserves.
