Re: Scorsese In 3-D!

Hmmm. Yeah, not sure about this. I'm a Scorsese fan and even love some of his recent films like The Aviator and Departed, but Shutter Island was rather underwhelming and this looks like a children's movie.

I've been lamenting lately that all the good mature adult storytelling has migrated to premium cable channels, leaving the theatres full of nothing but 3D kids movies, and now the director of Taxi Driver and Goodfellas is making a 3D kids movie. Ech.

Et tu, Scorsese? He's the last director I expected to jump on this lame fad.

"One for them, one for me". He probably has something interesting planned for the one after this one.

Really? Ok, whatever. I might catch this if it looks good, but I'd much rather he do I Heard You Paint Houses.

Re: Scorsese In 3-D!

Didn't he just have his first kid when he was 55-or-so? Maybe having some younkins around the house helped decide on this one.

Have you guys read the book? Expect an inventive PG Scorsese movie. It'll be like Casino, sans the sin.

I'm pretty sure it's more like "Do whatever project that interests me because I'm Martin Scorsese."

From the horse's mouth-

“One for them, one for me,” Scorsese says of the rotation between personal projects and commercial assignments artists are often forced into.

I thought Shutter Island was his "one for them" movie.

Jude Law cast in Scorsese's 'Cabret'
Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee also added to project

Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Frances de la Tour and Richard Griffiths have been cast in Martin Scorsese's live-action 3D adventure "Hugo Cabret." The film's production began Tuesday in London.

The new cast members join Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz and Helen McCrory in the GK Films-produced adaptation of Brian Selznick's bestselling 2007 book, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." "The Aviator" scribe John Logan wrote the screenplay.

Scorsese, Graham King, Tim Headington and Johnny Depp are producing. Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Charles Newirth and Christi Dembrowski are executive producers.

"Cabret," which won the Caldecott Medal and a National Book Award, tells the story of an orphan living in the walls of a Paris train station who encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl and a reserved toy shop manager.

The project is filming at Shepperton Studios as well as on location in London and Paris. Sony will release the film in December 2011.

Law is repped by WME, Winstone by ICM, Lee and de la Tour by Independent Talent Group and Griffiths by Paradigm.

Re: Scorsese In 3-D!

off topic: But why does it matter who actors are repped by?

on topic: It's Scorsese I'm there, I wonder what kind of homework he's done on the 3D?

I think Scorcese has to apply for work like everyone else, and consequently gets turned down for projects as well. I doubt the "one for them, one for me" concept really applies to directors working through Hollywood much.

Hugo Cabret (Scorsese, 2011, 3-D): Jude Law, Emily Mortimer, Ben Kingsley

Based on Brian Selznick’s best-selling childrens book “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” Martin Scorsese’s 3D mystery adventure “Hugo Cabret” centers on Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo (Asa Butterfield) who lives in the walls of a busy 1930s Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with a broken machine, an eccentric girl (Chloe Moretz) and a cold, reserved man (Ben Kingsley) who runs a toy booth in the station, Hugo’s undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy. Emily Mortimer plays the station’s flower shop girl, Lisette, and Michael Stuhlbarg plays Rene Tabard, a film restorer. They join a cast that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Christopher Lee and Ray Winstone.
Interestingly, the cast list includes actors playing Salvador Dali and James Joyce.

First on-set pics:

Release Date: December 9, 2011 (2D and 3D theaters)

Really? I think it looks like Scorsese channeling Terry Gilliam and looks fine.

Looks good to me. Scorsese always delivers. I expect strong character and frenetic storytelling, this time brought into the family film genre.

Wasn't that song just used in another trailer for a big movie? I can't put my finger on it.
