Okay movie, but a lot of fat that needed to be trimmed. Christopher Lee and the older couple with the dachshunds were completely unnecessary, and the Sacha Cohen character bordered on cartoonish.

Just saw this as it was recently added to Amazon Prime.
I think it's a truly excellent movie. It reminds me of a Studio Ghibli production if Ghibli used live action: very precise and consistent visuals, fantastical worlds with tenuous links to a nostalgic past, melancholy but hopeful atmosphere, minimal dialogue. It's a beautiful movie and filled with great acting. In particular, Ben Kingsley was magnificent. Also, as an ardent Francophile, the hyper-French production design and visuals were delightful to me. It's an art nouveau Paris that never really existed. My kids loved it as well.

Head's up. You can download this movie for free on iTunes today for Apple's "12 Days of Gifts" promotion.
This is a movie that I've always wanted to see... now I guess I have no excuse.

Gifts vary by region or country due to restrictions, store limits
Apple is continuing its "12 Days of Gifts" promotion, which allows iOS users to download a free gift every day (including, for the first time, US users). Monday's Day 5 present is a free copy of the Martin Scorsese film Hugo in the US and Canada, while in the UK the movie is instead the Christmas classic Home Alone (the films normally sell for around $15-$18). In a new twist on the gift-giving promotion, most of the previous day's "presents" have remained free since they debuted.
