No. He's got his Oscars, he's in the history books, and is still loved. I think he's done well w/ himself.
I was just thinking that (to me) he is a really great actor who belongs in that generational pantheon along with Nicholson, Pacino, Hoffman, DeNiro, but is not as lionized as them. And yes, he has two Oscars, but he didn't bank the nominations that really signify a career of achievement.

Whose fault would that be? Does he not choose what roles to take? He won for French Connection and Unforgiven. Those are some fucking masterpieces. He's good.

I think we should give Leo and Johnny Depp 10 Oscars each (each even though there are others who are much more worthy of one) just so people would stop talking about it.
I don't get the obsession people have with those two and how they "deserve" an Oscar.

Speaking of Hackman and deserve, he should have won the Oscar for best actor in 1989 for Mississippi Burning over Dustin Hoffman for Rain Man.

I thought it would be nice if someone who I consider a great actor with a long and distinguished career was given a celebratory acknowledgement while he is still alive and can appreciate it.

I am clearly insane.

It bothers me that he wasn't even nominated for The Conversation.

It would be redundant. He already has TWO for his actual achievements. Those are better than some "congrats for being a cool actor" award.

His Lex Luthor performance is severely underrated. He proved he has comedy chops along with his dramatic genius.

One of my favorite scenes of all time is when his Luthor turns from comedic to menacing at the turn of a dime when Superman opens the lead box to reveal the kryptonite.

Re: Is Gene Hackman retired?

I'm ok with his getting an "honorary" Oscar. I don't like the term "honorary" though. Makes it sound like a consolation prize. Not quite as good as the "real thing".
It's image should be changed to the ultimate honor. Given for a career that may or may not include previous wins. The pinnacle.

"I've got three best actor Oscars"
"So what? I've got an honorary Oscar. Now bring my car around."

Paul Newman won an Oscar, AND got a lifetime achievement thingy.

I think he should have his 2 Oscars taken away and then award him the honorary Oscar

Maybe just take one away and give him an honorary pat on the back for his life's work?

Re: Is Gene Hackman retired?

As has been mentioned, the Honorary Oscar isn't really meant for guys like Hackman who already have a collection of actual Oscars. Look at who has won it. The list is full of people who were nominated x number of times but never won. That's what it's for.

As far as comparisons to Nicholson (12 noms, 3 wins), Pacino (8,1), Hoffman (7,2) and DeNiro (7,2), his 5 nominations and 2 wins aren't really that far off from what those other guys have. Aside from Royal Tenenbaums, which I thought he should have been nominated for, it's not like his post-Unforgiven resume is littered with typical Academy fodder.

He's great. We all like him. He doesn't need the Honorary Oscar.

Newman won the Cecille B. DeMille award, which is a Golden Globes award. He did not win the Academy Honorary Oscar.

Yep. A great movie and Hackman giving one of his best performances I've ever seen him give.

Nobody wins the Honorary Oscar. That one is awarded. The others are won.

Semantics. The only real difference is that the honorary award is decided on by a group of 50 or so people instead of by a group of thousands. The mechanics of the voting may be different, but it's still at the discretion of a relatively small group of people. It's not like there is some sort of objective metric that the acting awards are based on.

Are you sure?

BTW, he was given that award the year before he won his acting Oscar for The Color of Money. The same thing happened to Henry Fonda, who won his acting Oscar for On Golden Pond a year after his honorary Oscar.

I'm not sure if they are the only examples, but Gary Cooper and Elia Kazan each won two "regular" Oscars before being awarded an honorary one.

A likely candidate for the near future is Glenn Close, who has been nominated 6 times but never won.

Re: Is Gene Hackman retired?

Huh? I guess I missed that. It didn't even occur to me that he would have gotten one 30 years ago. Still follows the formula though. Gary Cooper and Elia Kazan on the other hand...
