I guess it is official :

Dustin Hoffman says good pal Gene Hackman has retired
To a list of quietly - and in our opinion prematurely - retired movie stars, including Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson, you can now add Gene Hackman.
That news comes from his best friend of more than 40 years standing and sometime roommate, Dustin Hoffman. And Hoffman hints he may not be far behind.
At TIFF, promoting his movie Boychoir – about the acclaimed touring American choir and the school that created it - Hoffman recalled shooting a part in Hackman’s penultimate movie, 2003’s Runaway Jury.
“I haven’t talked to him in a long time. He lives in Santa Fe, NM. But when we did Runaway Jury, he said, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ He paints and writes fiction now. He’s smarter than most of us, so he can do that.”
Elaborating on the memory, Hoffman said, “After we wrapped our last scene of the film, Gene said to me, ‘Let’s get drunk.’ So we sat at the bar, and he looked me right in the eye at one point and said, ‘Do you get the same feeling I get when you finish a film?’ I said, ‘What’s that?’ And he said, ‘That you’re not going to work again.’
“Today it’s so nutty. We’re at an age where these festivals, thank God, allow films to have oxygen
“Because otherwise, it’s just going to be epic things, four dimension, seats moving and Smell-o-Vision. It’s perfect timing for me (to wind down a career), because I’m 77.”
For the record, Hackman’s last film was shot in Toronto the following year, Welcome To Mooseport with Ray Romano.

He had a nice long career. I hate that he ended his career with Welcome to Mooseport.
I do respect that he decided that he had enough and was ready to move on with his life. Hopefully he enjoys the remainder of days in good health.

I'm glad he ended his career with Royal Tenenbaums *whistles and walks off*

I figured the thread bump would be reporting that he had died. Based on that assumption alone, reading news that he's "officially" retired is welcome news.

Grammar Nazi Nitpicking, but shouldn't it be "Has Gene Hackman retired?" I suppose it's a question if whether or not you're treating "retired" as a past-tense verb or a present-tense adjective. 'Has' sounds better to me, but then again I've been known to enjoy midget porn.

Re: Is Gene Hackman retired?
No, he's not dead.
Hackman won two Oscars. Best Actor for The French Connection (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992).
He was nominated (just) three other times: Best Actor for Mississippi Burning (1988), and BSA in 1967 and 1970.
He has about 80 film acting credits on his IMDb page.
By the time the next Oscar ceremony rolls around, Hackman will be 86 years old.
I think he should be given an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of his career and body of work, ASAP. Some would say the two he has are enough reward.
Opinions?

Well I dont what's the criteria for giving an honorary oscar, but he already has two. Maybe if he never won one in his career that might seem appropriate.

No. He's got his Oscars, he's in the history books, and is still loved. I think he's done well w/ himself.
