Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen
I'm kind of interested in this thing. It's being called a 'Norse opera'. Apparently sparse on dialogue, and made to be more than just a Viking action movie with horned helmets and stereotypes. It's getting some kind of US release on June 4, 2010. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I've avoided reviews and spoilers, but basically the story revolves around a one-eyed fighter played by Mikkelsen and a trip by Vikings to the New World.
Trailer, which can be scaled up to 720p:

Seeing what Refn did with the Pusher Trilogy - add in everything RocShemp said and this could be the best film of the year.

I watched a bit of this film. I wouldn't blind buy it. It's a bit boring and I couldn't watch more than 20 minutes of the film. It sort of reminded me of a Danish version of VERSUS.

Looks like it's filled with some fantastic imagery. But it seems to be getting reamed as boring and pointless. But then again, I like tome poem kind of films so I'll still give it a chance.

Wow...read those Bad reviews...uhh...they just didn't get it from what it looks like. And that "review" from the UK Telegraph...isn't a review..it's 2 sentences (3 at the most). What's wrong with just being mostly told by images?

Well... this is an amazing film.
I'm blown away.
It made me think of Malick as I watched. So much said in this film, in such profound ways, by the film itself. Not the characters, not the dialogue, the director worked this on another level. You get to the point where a glance from Mikkelson in a direction, or a look from him, says volumes and you immediately know something/what's up. The incredible visual feast tells the story more than anything. Mikkelson is such a talent. Man he delivers in spades on this.
It was better than I hoped for.
I can now clearly understand the dummies in those two reviews on RT, yes they didn't get it. Dummies would miss the entire film for sure. No way the wide audience would have anything to say other than stuff like - 'it was boring, nothing happened', or 'I just kept waiting for something to happen and it never did' similar to the two negative reviews on RT.
Go out of your way to see this one.

the movie must be "out there" since there are people bitching on imdb about how boring the movie is and how they turned it off

pretty much. IMDB is the site that JSP goes thinking that he "knows" movies and can talk to others who are of the same mindset. It's like like the comment section on a youtube video...hilarious and dangerous for your mind.

Dr. Mabuse is pretty dead-on with the Malick comparison. maybe throw in some Apocalypse Now influence as well. this was one big meditative journey, and a film that celebrates the objective of film itself: tell a story through a series of images. gee, haven't seen a film do that in a while!
