Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

Does anyone have any info on the theatrical or DVD release of this? I can't find anything.

I was hoping to see it in the theater, but I'd at least like to get it on DVD.

Well I see my RT links was broken by RT for some stupid reason. They moved it form a link to the film with a poster, to one with no link. Brilliant admins over there.

But now the film is at 84% with 19(16-3) reviews in:

The Blu is out in other regions btw.

I just saw it and I liked it. Aguirre: The Wrath of God immediately came to mind while watching this. Yes I can see how some people would find it boring with the long moments of silence and sparse dialogue, but I enjoyed it. I'll pick up the BD whenever it comes out.

Forget The Expendables. This is the badass movie to see this year.

It made me think of Malick as I watched. So much said in this film, in such profound ways, by the film itself. Not the characters, not the dialogue, the director worked this on another level. You get to the point where a glance from Mikkelson in a direction, or a look from him, says volumes and you immediately know something/what's up. The incredible visual feast tells the story more than anything. Mikkelson is such a talent. Man he delivers in spades on this.

It was better than I hoped for.
I agree with all of this. I'll need to watch it a couple more times - this is a film that invites different religious and philosophical interpretations. In fact, it provokes them. Amazing that anyone could be bored by this; if anything, it seems too short. Loved the supporting cast, too.

The sparse score is also excellent.

Great film.

Wanted to see this during the past weekend, but too lazy to trek all the way down to the village... May have to this weekend though as I really want to see it now.

Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

Watched it yesterday.

I completely agree with Osiris3657, Aguirre Wrath of God, mixed with a little El Topo.

I don't take drugs anymore, but this was clearly a "Head" film. Odyssey, trip, nightmare. Excellent score as well.

I was sure I was going to find it boring, but I totally enjoyed it, even without any drugs. I even read a film comment interview with Refn where he says if you're high it'll be more enjoyable, (Hell what movie isn't more enjoyable when you're high?)

Mikkelsen was awesome, no dialogue, no visible emoting, and yet he plays one of the more memorable characters in film this year.

Pretty damn good.

If you are into the other region stuff, Region 2/B has it already ready out as of May.

I finally saw this this morning. I dunno, I feel like I just missed out on the experience most of you had. But the word "Amazing" I clearly did not see. I respect the film a lot, but while it was definitely a beautiful movie to watch, I just felt there was not much else going on. A rather simplified storyline I thought. Mads definitely brings the ass-kicking here, but damn - he didn't say one word, not even to the little kid. I'll rewatch it again sometime soon. I actually watched Neil Marshall's Centurion right before this, so it actually had the same look and feel, but Rising definitely has that ethereal aesthetic going on beyond Centurion. I'm trying to figure out where the "badass" label is coming from. The few fight scenes are very good though, so I guess it's from that. Still searching the rest of the movie for some substance. I'd love to see more Mads though. Guess I'm just mad for Mads.

This is up on Netflix Instant if anyway cares....

Watched it last night, been waiting all year to see it. I liked it a lot, but then again I like the Malick-style of cinema and vikings, plus the ambient/discordant guitar soundtrack was amazing. Felt too short actually.

Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

Finally got around to seeing this one. Definitely a masterpiece. It reminded me of Malick's work mixed with Aguirre, The Wrath of God (and I see both comparisons have been used in this thread already), but ultimately felt unique unto itself. I was hypnotized as it all unfolded. A great, great film.

Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

This thread has convinced me to give this movie another shot. I watched it a few months back and it did nothing for me, but the praise, and comparisons to Malick, Aguirre, Apocalypse Now, etc. plus the fact that I've since watched (and mostly enjoyed) the Pusher trilogy in the last month, and another film with Mikkelsen in it have me convinced that I just wasn't in the right state of mind when I initially watched this.

Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

Watched this in HD on Netflix yesterday.

Yep, it's fucking brilliant.

I loved Refn's direction. The sparse dialogue didn't bother me since this is a film built very much on imagery. Speaking of which, the cinematography was gorgeous. I absolutely loved how well they captured the harsh lands these men were in.

Mads was a brutal powerhouse as One Eye. Few actors could pull off a role like that so convincingly.

I don't know if it was mentioned before but there is a Canadian Blu-ray.

I own the UK Blu-ray and I am very happy with it. Awesome film!

I have the UK BD and I am 99% sure it is locked. Blu-ray.com indicates locked as well.

It has a trailer, making of and commentary I believe. Audio was DTS-HD MA 5.1 on a BD-25. Looked great when I watched it.
