and it is locked. Yep. Just checked it out...oooh commentary. Ugly cover though...trying really hard on giving it a 300 edge, eh?

The UK Blu-ray is region locked.

It looks like the Canadian Blu-ray is a good choice. The review sounds good.

yeah...it's pretty solid.

I may get the Canadian BD...just...it lacks the commentary. *sigh* I'll get it when it's cheap..

It's pretty cheap already. Here.

I just bought another Canadian Blu-Ray from them, Wolfhound. Shipping was rather quick.

I have the Canadian copy, was pleased with the quality. This doesn't appear to be getting a USA release anytime soon, so this will do.

Bump! Finally, watched this tonight. Still mulling it all over.

Anyone who still remembers the film care to comment on...

Spoiler:
Why did he sacrifice himself at the end?

I saw this a few weeks ago. I had no idea it would have the arthouse style like it did. It was really interesting. I like it a lot.

Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

Watched for the first time this weekend and loved it. The posters who noted the similarities between Rising and New World/Apocalypse Now (a ton of parallels with the latter in the "Hell" episodes) are right on.

A couple of questions (spoilered, just in case):

Spoiler:
1. Who was the painted bearded white guy who emerged from the forest? He had the same tribal markings as the natives we meet later, but he speaks English to the Vikings. Did I miss something?

2. After the slaughter the Viking leader's son emerges from the forest to join the trio. At first, I had no idea who he was and thought he was going to attack the wounded old guy and One Eye. Did I miss a scene of him leaving the group?

Yea. This is on Netflix now. Another unusual, captivating movie from Refn.

I like how he can move things forward, without requiring people to talk all the time. It's refreshing to watch a movie and not be bombarded with dialogue.

IMO it also has similarities with Jodorowsky's El Topo.

Re: Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2010) Mads Mikkelsen

When we last sat down to talk to Nicolas Winding Refn, he spoke about a project he was developing that would be set in Tokyo. He mentioned a fondness for the Yakuza, suggesting that this film would find him re-visiting a crime underworld similar to that in “Only God Forgives” and “Drive.” But no one could have guessed it would be… a sequel to “Valhalla Rising”?

We spoke to Refn on the eve of the North American premiere for “Only God Forgives” and he revealed that project was a re-teaming with “Valhalla Rising” star Mads Mikkelsen, saying they had, “talked about revisiting the [One-Eye] character from ‘Valhalla Rising’ again to kind of complete… because there’s a similarity between ‘Valhalla Rising,’ ‘Drive’ and ‘Only God Forgives.’ But in a way I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character. But make the movie in Tokyo.”

When asked how this could be a sequel, Refn cryptically said, “Tokyo is a world onto itself.” This didn’t seem to clear up exactly how One Eye could emerge from the early Viking era to modern day Tokyo, so when pressed, Refn teased that the film was, “About the future…”

While Refn begins work on the “Barbarella” television series, it’s possible this could be his next film after "I Walk With The Dead," as he’s long spoken about his affinity for Tokyo. Whatever the case, it would be impossible for us to not get excited at the thought of “Valhalla Rising 2: Tokyo Drift.”
